He has less ES points than Muzzin over the last 2 years. Rielly's main advantage is his transition game, where he's the best on the team by a large margin.

Rielly is our best D-men but he doesn't play the right side. Hasn't in 2+ years. Last time I think was when him and muzzin were a pairing in 2018-2019 with Babcock
Rielly isn't a 8.5-9.5M d-men but to be fair the only players in that entire 2 groups who are around that level is Makar (has top 5D of all time potential) Pietrangelo (conssitent top 10D in the league most years and since 2013) and maybe Heiskanen
Everyone else is fairly paid (most of group 2) or overpaid (Hamilton/nurse/trouba/weresnki/Hughes etc)
Rielly should come in at 7 to 7.5M on 8 year deal. 7.5M is a no bargain but not overpayment deal. 7M is a 500k discount and anything under that is a big time discount
Giving Rielly 8x8 would be a bad move imo unless Muzzin is being moved a year from now.

He's still generating a fair amount of quality looks for the team. Yesterday outside of his assist he had several strong rushes and set kase in the slot for a good chance.
The production fir Rielly has been lower than his play imo offensively atleast. That hopefully helps us with this deal but I defiantly think Rielly has 2-3 season of 60+ offense in him making him a cream of the crop d-men from the offensive side.
Getting him signed as soon as possible would be great as he looks motivated and hungry so far. Think he'll put a big season for the leafs
Rielly has been quite unlucky in terms of production at EVS past two years. He's had plays he's set up killed by JT/Kerfoot/Mikheyev

Looking like Leafs missed the windows to sign or trade him. I thought 6.5x8 = full NMC was too good to be true when you mentioned it. Probably why Rielly said something to the effect that this is a business which tells me Leafs are not close to his ask. We will see but this looking like Hyman 2.0.

Except it is not Muzzy (forgetting Habs goal) it is almost impossible to cover for Holl's missed pickups, disjointed positioning, poor passing, screening his own tender, not physically moving his man from net, it goes on and on and on .. Holl was -3 last night and was cause of each and every goal against .. give Muzzy a consistent position defender like Lily and he becomes our best defense like he was all preseason .. this is not hockey science for hockey guys to see .. right now Rielly Brodie is our only decent pairing .. Dermy is covering from Sandin too all over ice and it is only working because he is much faster and can scramble to fix issues .. but even Rielly a true #1 dman has puck in slot by himself at hash marks and he can't finish it .. I like him but a true #1 offensive dman puts that one in back of net and team rallies around a true leader .. but Rielly fired it off glass and game ended

My point is that the longer you wait to sign Rielly the more it will cost and the tougher it will be to fit him in under the cap. Hyman got more expensive as the season played out due to his play. Rielly is a finished product and the price to resign him has gone up steadily since the draft, right after teams started signing top dmen for huge dollars.

If Rielly is 90% these dmen making $9m+, Rielly comes in at $8.1+m. Of course some will argue he is not worth that AAV but if the market bares it, Rielly will be glad to take it like Hyman was.

McAvoy gets almost 10 million a year to be a max 32pt dman. That is crazy money. This basically takes Reilly out of the running for anything less than 9 million per. McAvoy is nothing special but yet gets paid. At least Reilly has put up a 20 goal season in the not too distant past.

Rielly made the offer with the NMC and it was not accepted by the Leafs. It was for a very good Cap hit as well.
His last words on the subject is telling. He is pissed. They loved the cap hit but not the full NMC for 8 years and have been offering less years and only a Limited NTC for part of the deal. Offer is off the table. Hopefully Shanny will come to his senses and tell Dubas to get it done. Think the aav has gone up now!

The Leafs will say the McAvoy deal represents a player in his prime years.
Rielly will say he produces more than McAvoy.
Either way, he's not back next year - assuming they didn't try and trade him in the offseason, they've mismanaged this situation. That's another highly sought after player that is going to walk for nothing, with no obvious replacement in sight.

Hopefully he comes to his senses and fires Dubas before he walks Reilly out the door because of his incompetence with the RFA signings
