Isn't it like Tavares where you sign him then worry about the bad years later? Can't imagine Tavares at 34/35 is gonna be too pretty.
That is one way to look at it.
Another way is to decide not to make the same mistake twice.

So this originally all started with us being told he will not be an own rental and the season is about to start and he's still not signed.

I'd hate to lose another asset for nothing, I was really hoping he was going to sign a long term deal around 7, but the closer and closer we get the less and less likely it seems.

Anyone heard anything new?

If we lose him, it will be for $6-7m in capspace to spend, not for nothing.

You could get that cap space and a blue chip prospect or picks. Or an own rental and lose him for nothing but gaining cap space.

So you're still not maximizing his value.

Good teams don't trade their impending UFAs because they are trying to win.

I would value Hughes more than Rielly.

Rielly should be getting a 6 year deal in the lower 7m range.

This whole thread was started because it was stated that Rielly would not be an own rental this year, that's from Dubas mouth.

So apparently he's getting signed or being traded unless we just can't trust the words that come out of our GM's mouth?

I agree with this sentiment. I was one of the ones who reported from dubas mouth (lebrun) who said he wasn’t comfortable not extending him.

I expected an extension or trade. Based on dubas word. Which has always been pretty straight forward in the past.

it looks like an own rental. Which is a Massive mistake IMO

I'd do 8 x 7.125 max.

Very simple view of things. At 28 and 29 years old I don't mind paying him the 9 mil going rate. At 30 and beyond I'd rather be at Parayko money. So 9 x 2 + 6.5 x 6 all divided by 8 and you arrive at 7.125. I'd give him his NMC as well.

Seems fair to me.

You would think that would be signed by now if true.
If diceman is to be believed the hold up is with the nmc. Understandably Morgan would want it for the length of the deal, where I imagine management would prefer some flexibility on the back end of the deal if it’s one they need to get out of later on.

That makes sense, yet, it isn't such a major issue, that they can't find middle ground... you'd think on that one point.

Unless they are last place no way would they trade him for prospect or picks it just doesn't make sense if you are contending

When you have hopes of contending, you don't unload Morgan Rielly at a 5m cap hit. Sucks if we lose him in the off-season for nothing more than cap space, but we have little to no choice. Unloading him now for prospects or picks would be crippling to our back end

Not for a player who is giving you that kind of discount IMO.

Anything starting with a 6 or less than 7.5 should have been signed already. Tells me Rielly wants something starting with an 8, given what Jones, Nurse, Werenski, Hieskanen and Hamilton signed for.

It will get done .. Shanny does not want to give Morgan a NMC this season (if team bombs out then he needs a backup rebuild plan and Morgan would be it) .. and Dubie has concerns in last 3 years of deal with NMC .. it will get worked out as AAV is added/negotiated to account for what Leafs want .. this is life it is always a negotiation .. there is a lot of back and forth between sides and it will get done before season starts

It’s a discount now, but years 6-8 might be ugly. As we all know this will be a cap team going forward so finding a way to get out from that deal if needed is a necessity. I still think it gets done and we will all like it anyway it shakes down within the parameters being talked about here (6.5-7.25 x 8)
