I am not going to start a "should we keep AM" thread because I believe the team should make every effort to retain their #1C. But we have to be honest that there is at least some chance they won't meet his ask and they would have to shop him. Some people have posted to trade him to Chicago for Bedard which is interesting but I am absolutely certain the Hawks would not do that. However the next few teams on the list are not looking at getting that generational talent level next year so it could become a Fantilli, or Michkov or Carlsson deal.

I don't think the Leafs would wait for Michkov so its more Fantilli or Carlsson. The one reason why this could work would be the freed up cap would allow them to resign a player like ROR, buy out Murray and help afford Mitch and Willie too. The downside is obvious but there would need to be more coming back. I think Anaheim or SJS would be interested although the Sharks would be more cap constrained because they chose not to move Karlsson. Does this make sense with where the Leafs are today or do you think any deal has to be built around the right player under contract coming back?

More than DeBrincat & Meier (even though they remained RFAs @ 9-10m qualifying) especially if the leafs retain 50%.

Any team he’s dealt to would need to send cap back so we’d probably be looking at gaining 5mil cap space tops.
Definitely need a decent C back.

He was getting overpaid as f*** even if dubas was here

5 years 12-13M being reported

Dude isnt worth his current contract at 8 years with his injury concerns and declining play every playoffs

Yeah well, that is going to be 14-15 if he stays. It's that or lose him for nothing

A competent GM will deal him

Dubas/New GM needed/needs to deal him and not let him f*** us over

The big 4 era is purgatory. The ceiling is a 2nd round exit until JT is gone

Matthews wasnt signed 8 years and we cant wait out JT.

Move Marner+Matthews and kickstart a massive rebuild.

In 3 years we hopefully have Misa + other high end talent and can look to come up again.

They won't be able to thanks to short sightedness of Shanny. July 1st Matthews can block any trade. They will try and use him to go deep and hope he decides to stay and then will use his leverage if he does or just walk.

If he wasn't willing to re-sign here and Anaheim wanted to take a step forward with having Mintyukov, Zegras, Terry and McTavish etc...and would re-sign with the Ducks...

Would we be able to just do Matthews for 2nd overall, Fantilli?

Should get similar or better return Sabres got for Eich. Tuch, Krebs, conditional 1st and conditional 2nd.

I'd be happy with #2OA, MacTavish and Drysdale. Could add a 3rd to get it done. Do we have any left ?
That woulf be fantastic.. but i cant see anaheim biting.. maybe 2 of those pieces?

Yeah probably since the 1st is #2OA and Fantilli look like he'll be a nice power forward. Like I said, we could add if we had to. The trick is to find an organization that wants the best American sniper to revitalize their fanbase.

They don’t have to trade him before July 1st. In fact no one will trade for him unless they can sign him. They can ask for his trade list and trade him before the season starts.
There are only a handful of places I see him playing/ living anyway - so they're not getting any studs for him.
If he wants too much money and won’t give a list, you sit him.

He has a no trade come July 1st. He doesn’t have to provide them with any trade list.

Why do I have a feeling there is going to be an ESPN 30 for 30 on this team and its core in about 10yrs chronicling how a team with so much promise ended up a disaster because an inexperienced GM overpaid everybody before they had proven anything substantial and then overplayed his own hand in bargaining a new deal...it's like a directors dream.

Matthews, if he agrees to extend in Anaheim for..

2nd overall
Henrique ($)

and Ideally McTavish...

I'd be willing to give them 28 too if they gave us a 3rd.
