When our best players stop playing like hot doo doo butter against the worst team in the league they will finally win a game against Detroit. Aho, Svech, Slavin, and Hamilton were just bad.

And I just hate Gardiner on the PP2 so much. It unreasonably angers me that they removed Bean from the PP. Borderline Faulk over Hamilton anger.

Necas really masked Svechnikov's ~quarter-season of struggles offensively. He has just 5 5v5 points since the start of March (Link). That's sub-Foegele.

Not big on being a Debbie Downer in these threads, but this one concerns me. He's the guy they need to be the straw that stirs the drink offensively with his physical ability to get inside the dots in a close checking environment (the playoffs).
He reminds me of Costner in Tin Cup right now, prior to moving the change in his pocket to the other pocket.

Whew that one hurt. We are at a deflection point and our play for the rest of the season will define this team. I do think Roddy is the right guy. There will be a "Why are you here" talk in the locker room and some personal decisions will need to be made on commitment. The next four games loom large in those assessments.

The emotional swings on this board tho
It's understandable though, the Borg thought we didn't need to give up assets to improve the team at the deadline to be contenders. However, the first outing after the deadline, they looked like shit against a bottom feeder. The next six games determine if we are contenders or pretenders.

We are 8-3-1 combined against Tampa and Florida this year. We are absolutely a contender. We just have a really, really bad habit of playing down to the level of bad teams. And this has been a consistent problem this year. Of our 14 losses this year, half are against Detroit and Columbus. Half.

But that also means, when we are playing against teams we will likely be competing with in the playoffs, we are a beast.

Hey, remember when this board was making fun of the Panthers board for being emotional after a tough loss?

To be fair, the GDT post of the first game called out Hurricanes fans being the worst for some reason which was long before the tough loss.

That said, mocking anyone on a different board for losing their shit post loss is a real glass house situation for 95% of this place.

I don't see anyone here hiding behind delusions of 'we might have lost, but we were still playing like the better team, and they only won because they cheated'.

We all accept the shit bomb that got dropped the last couple games. Nobody is fooling him or herself into thinking the result wasn't justified. We're pissed because the team flat out sucked. That's a lot different than the reactions we saw from them.

Maybe the boys just really loved having Haydn on the team? As Rod said, he had been there a long time and was well liked. He is known for his upbeat, fun personality and could have been a big locker room presence for all we know. The juxtaposition of Staal’s career celebration happening right after a beloved teammate was shipped out is weird and unfortunate timing.

For all their strengths, this team struggles with change. So losing wasn’t surprising to me - the lack of effort and team structure was though.

Ehh... I'd say last night was warranted, given Brindy had the same attitude in the post game press conference.
Whoa...Brind'Amour also thinks we're going to get swept in the first round and that this game exposes how badly we f***ed up in not making a deadline trade?

What’s alarming to me about last night’s game is that most all of the characteristics of a successful playoff run (sharp passing, net front presence, power play execution, defensive zone coverage, etc) were absent in spades. The only positive thing was Reimer’s performance in net, which was easily his best of the season. The next two games against Nashville will reveal a lot about where we stand as we face a team hungry for the post season after being virtually given up for dead only a few weeks ago...

YES, THIS. That is why I made my post above. How they recover from this debacle is a strong indicator of the future performance of this team. We will see...

Big difference is they were getting upset about losing to another top team, we at least mostly shrug off (even if it's frustrating) the losses to Tampa because they're inevitable. The Canes on the other hand shit the bed AGAIN against the WORST team in the division. And outside of those 2 Florida games and the TBL win, that's been our trend recently (splitting 1 goal games with both CHI & DAL, split a 4 game series with CBJ, split 2 game series with DET). That's the past month of games, mostly against the bottom half of the division. I'm not worried about not making the playoffs, it would take a disastrous finish for that to happen. But it's hard for teams to take us seriously, much less ourselves, when we're constantly shooting ourselves in the foot when things should be fairly "easy". More often than not, we're not being outplayed by our opponents, we're outplaying ourselves. Doogie failing to hold the blueline 6-on-5 last night multiple times under no pressure is a microcosm of our gameplay lately

Maybe that's the plan. Give em that false sense of security and then destroy everyone in the playoffs.........................

That's the most concerning aspect of the last 2 games. We just weren't there. The effort wasn't there. We coasted along aimlessly all over the ice last night, seemingly incapable of caring about the result of the contest. So, so, so many passes from the goal line back to the blue line in the offensive zone to an area that didn't have a single player.

Last night was one of the most mindless 'going through the motions' games I've seen out of this team since.... Hell, since the darkest days of the Muller era.

Three thoughts (all of which could be bogus of course):

Q: does anyone think that our style of play can be exhausting and as such later in year/playoffs we may run out of gas?

couple that with teams playing a clog the middle style could be a possibility in why the lull?

Finally, lines have been juggled a lot lately and perhaps also contributing to our uneven performance?
