The NHA didn't name all-star teams, and I can't find a source that actually lists the PCHA teams, so I have pieced this together from mostly single player references, so position is in doubt, such as Total Hockey, which doesn't give any info on Fred Cyclone Taylor's awards. Any way here is what I have put together:

Total Hockey often lists players as PCHA all-star, PCHA 1st team All-star, and PCHA 2nd team all-star, so there is some confusion as to when there were two teams named, and which team some players are on, and as you can see some years have 8 or 9 guys on the 1st team. Same goes for the WCHL/WHL teams.

Why does Cyclone Taylor's LOH bio say he was a first team all-star everywhere he played for 18 straight seasons, when we can't find his all-star berths on said bio (they are listed for all other players), in "Total Hockey", at SIHR.org, or in the Trail of the Stanley Cup? Is this all folklore?

I started to respond before I realized that the thread was a year old, but since you bumped it, I will reply to one of your comments.

I just don't see how you can be the hart runner-up and not be the norris winner.

Chuck Rayner won the Hart in 1950 and he was only a 2nd Team All-Star selection at goaltender. Some voters prefer to give it to the best player in the NHL instead of "the player judged to be the most valuable to his team."

It is a case of doing more for a team with a lesser amount of help from teammates.

Looking in Total Hockey, I see all of these except for Irvin in 25-26. The HHoF website only gives his NHL coaching all-star record.

Of course this now gives 9 players for each of the 1st and 2nd team on the 22-23 PCHA squad.

I'll add that the 1st team all-star goalie on the 21-22 WCHL squad is almost certainly Charles (Charlie) Reid, but I can't confirm this.

"Retro Norrises" according to the voting

Since we're doing the Top 60 defensemen of all time list now and people are talking about retro awards, I figured now would be a good time to post this. Specifically, now that we have a better idea of the full voting records (posted in the sticky on the top of this board), we see that Ultimate Hockey's retro awards were merely educated guesses that often contradict what the actual awards voting showed.

So here are the "retro Norrises according to the voting patterns." For 1923-24 to 1929-30, I'm using Hart voting. For 1930-31 to 1952-53, I'm using All Star voting. Credit goes to seventieslord for coming up with this criteria, which I believe is a major improvement off of Ultimate Hockey's educated guesses. Since the actual Norris doesn't exactly track Hart and All Star voting, if a player finished a second by only a couple of points, I've noted him in (parenthesis).

I'm changing 1932 to Ching Johnson as my "retro Norrises" go. Eddie Shore had 1 more 1st Team vote, but Ching had 2 more 2nd Team votes. An effective tie.

And Ching was 1 point away from winning the Hart Trophy, while Shore didn't place.

Anyone know of any other cases like this?

Yes, to be clear, the all-stars were intended to be a team's worth of players. So they had All-Star starters, but also named substitute players to the all-star teams. That is, they were the best players who were playing as subs that season. So the 1st team subs were likely not as good as the 2nd team starters.

Not for every season, I don't think. It shouldn't be difficult to find on google, since it was the newspaper (Regina Leader?) choosing these all-star teams rather than the league.

Yes, LOH says Taylor was 1st Team-All Star every year from 1900-1918.

The Trail itself apparently says "Was regarded as a speedy rushing defender in the east. (Played rover and center upon moving west) He was a great goal scorer and inspirational leader. He was named many times to western all-star teams."

Yet Taylor is only listed on three PCHA All-Star Teams above - 1914, 1915, and 1920 (which is bizarre, considering the number of times he led that league in scoring).

The LegendsOfHockey website lists PCHA All Star Teams SOME of their player profiles and they sometimes differ from this thread.

Edit: For some reason I thought this post would provide new information. It doesn't really - other than the omission of Cully Wilson from the above tables I guess. I was hoping for confirmation as to Taylor's awards, which are only mentioned in the text of the LOH bio. The section on awards for him is blank, as it is for most PCHA players.

Not quite the same thing, but at the end of Vol. 1 of The Trail of the Stanley Cup the author, Charles L. Coleman, selected his all-star team for 1893-1926.

The nominees were:

I dont know if that author did or not, but I do know that he produced a 3 volume leather bound set (1000 copies in total) called Trail of the Stanley Cup (1893 to 1967). These were given to NHL players, team personnel & so on, never actually sold through bookstores or wherever, made available to the public. ClassicAuctions had a set up for grabs that belonged to Norm Ullman, past sale prices exceeding $3000.

I've grown dissatisfied with the not-quite complete records of the PCHA All-Star Teams that were pulled from player profiles in The Trail and Total Hockey. I'm hoping that with the help of google archives, we can pull full records of all the teams.

The teams were chosen by Fred "Mickey" Ion, the PCHA's chief referee. In 1922, the From the Calgary Daily Herald wrote that Ion had "handled all league matches, with one exception, in the past three or four years.
