It's given those prone to whining and complaining, the ability to continue to do so. Otherwise go back to post 1.
Yeah i don't care about trying to justify the Leafs shit-show with pointing out how other teams fared
The excuses never stop with the hard-core cheerleaders

But the Leafs have just been mainly unlucky right?! Not too easy to play agianst as ROR and Muzzin have said (among others), lacking the ""killer instinct" as Shanny has said, no folding because of demons, and failing to stick up for eachother as Shanny has said.

Friednam indicated the exit interviews were blunt about why it didn't work.

But it was just a luck thing to some

So you are good with giving them raises and just keep going with them regardless of how it will impact other positions? Crapping the bed every playoffs isnt enough justification? 7 yrs....really its 4 yrs as I didnt expect them to do much the first 3 yrs they were in the playoffs.

Forgive me but it seems like you have no clue what you're talking about sorry...
Tavares has played 5 of the 7 years on his current contract, what a waste 🗑

None of the true core four crapped the bed at all, did you actually watch all the playoff games and evaluate each individual based on their performances as a whole? Somehow I highly doubt that... Tavares has become a faceoff/powerplay specialist... think about it, when O'Reilly was on his line, Tavares moved to the wing lol

The Leafs lost this past season because there was no response to a rookie getting manhandled and concussed... plus the Leafs captain is a pu$$y... which doesn't help set the tempo of the team... NOT BECAUSE MARNER, MATTHEWS, NYLANDER, REILLY SHIT THE BED LOL

What about bringing Keefe back along with the core? Basically nothing has changed. You are good with that and think they will figure it out?

I've said it all week, I would have fired Keefe a while ago. But now, unless it's Joe Q.. rather just keep Keefe. Not really much out there in terms of coaching that is better.

Why does it have to be so extreme....Nobody is saying yea lets go back to those days. 1-2 of our top guys need to be moved so the money can be spent more effectively. To assume we end up back in the dark days seems a little overeactive.

I mean if you cant see with your own eyes what he brings to the table and what I think our team needs more of then.....
Its the same mantra if you bring up toughness and someone replies with frazer mclaren and colton orr.. and then it just goes off the rails

The certainty that is shown in trading one player craters everything is very shallow. People become their best in uncomfortable situations or grow because of difficult decisions

I have not seen anythimg bold from this organization in.. i dont know how long

I hate the we got goalied argument because it comes out every year and only means one of two things

Either:

1. Our strategy of high paid forwards is flawed and we should abandon that in favor of a single goalie that will provide more value / results

OR

2. The expensive forward strategy works we just picked the wrong players, in which case we need to trade one or more of them for the right kind of players

I believe it's #2 TBH. I just think we don't have the right mix up top. Maybe if you have Stamkos instead of Tavares we are better off. Kadri instead of Kerfoot. I just think we need to get ballsy and make that trade similar to florida once the right player becomes available. I don't know who it is.

Ironic thing is Shanahan is good with that more than Dubas reportedly was just prior to his firing.
We don't know that. If he was going to dump one of the big 3 we would be getting this same message. If I was to look at the various unsupported theories out there, one which makes some sense is that Shanny knows one of these guys has to be outbound but until AM is sorted out the dominoes don't fall.

Everything sits status quo and then based on what happens with Willie and Matty we get a July 1 speech:

“There was a dramatic shift in my thinking,” Shanahan said. “As Auston/Mitch/Willie expressed, he might not want to be with our club long term. And I had to take that very seriously … There was a real possibility I would be looking for someone else.”

I think this scenario is more likely than the big 3 and SK are all back again.

They certainly seem to have stamina. No idea how people have the energy to cry about the same thing every day. Be great if they could at least say something different.

It's really strange. I read online about the following, for those who continually feel anger and resentment, perhaps even depression about their team losing. It might be useful for some.

  • Sometimes, we are so invested in our favorite sports teams that we experience symptoms of depression when they lose a big game or when the season comes to a close.
  • These symptoms can cause serious harm, but the good news is that there are effective techniques for recovering from sports fan depression.
  • First, you should take a step back and remember that it’s just a game. Because it is an emotionally-charged event, it feels a lot bigger than it really is; but the reality is that the large majority of your life is unaffected by this loss.
  • Additionally, it’s important that you stay social. If you’re down because the sports season is over and you’re missing time spent with friends watching the games, be sure to schedule other social interactions.
  • It’s also important you fill the empty void that remains when the game or the season is over; you can accomplish this mission by hanging out with friends and family, reading a new book, or watching a new sport!
  • In addition, talk with a loved one about your sports fan depression—commiserating with a fellow fan of the same team or sport might prove the most beneficial, as they can relate to your grief.
  • Finally, consider meeting with a counselor. If you are experiencing symptoms of depression that don’t go away within a few days, you might need professional help.

Like most Leafs fans, our lack of playoff success with this core bums me out. However … that doesn’t mean we should start over.

In Ovie’s first 12 seasons with the Caps, they never went past round 2. Year after year, ppl said this core couldn’t get it done, that they had soft players without the will to win. There were endless calls to tear it down, but they didn’t. They moved pieces around, but never moved the central core of Ovie, Backstrom, Kuzie, Carlson, Wilson, Holtby, etc. - Semin leaving as a UFA was the main core departure. In season 13 everything finally went their way, and they won the cup.

The Blues are a bit less similar to us, but they had 7 years of being a strong team, with a similar core that generally disappointed in the playoffs, tonnes of calls to break the team up. Then they won the cup in year 8.

People underrate the impact of luck in hockey - teams are so evenly balanced, bounces play a huge role. How often do we see nearly identical teams win a cup and lose in round 1 in back-to-back years? IMO our best chance to win a cup in the remotely near future is to extend Matthews, Marner and Nylander, and continue to build contenders around them and Rielly.

Sure, there are counter examples. The Sharks kept trying and never got there, there are zero guarantees. But everyone who wants to rebuild now, 7 years into Matthews’ Leafs career, would’ve also broken up the Caps WAY before their cup in year 13 with Ovie.
Comparing Ovie to Matthews and Marner does not work. Ovie’s desire to win is 1000 times stronger than both Matthews’ and Marner’s. We have never had, nor do we presently have, anyone close to Tom Wilson. Also, it would be interesting to see the salary cap structure in terms of percentages to the “core players, both on offence and defence, for those Caps and these Leafs.

Strong compete, strong desire to win.

Ovechkin in 2018 was 12% of cap, Carlson 10%, Kuztenzov 9.8%, Backstrom 8.43%. for 40% of the cap.

"Horribly run organization"

Sabres, no playoffs in 12 years... Coyotes, Canucks.... LOL

Recalls when the Leafs missed the playoffs 10 of 11 years.

Third in regular season points the last six years combined.

A number of top players in the league, playing exciting hockey.

Losing in the playoffs has sucked... but how about some Perspective. This is a very well organization, consistently icing one of the best teams in the league, who hasn't gotten over the top... go back to not making the playoffs for a decade, and then whine some more about Ned Flanders pills and pom poms.

Such an entitled, miserable fan base.

So, So Spoiled

You get to watch a team with Auston Mathews, Mitch Marner, John Tavares and William Nylander. You get to watch it every night for like almost a whole decade. And they do nothing but win. Since Keefe was hired, he has something like the best points-percentage of any coach ever.

That means for four seasons and about 250 games, we’ve got to see some of the best players on earth, every night, playing for us. And they get it done consistently.

I don’t think we should put so much on the random results of an arbitrary tournament. I for one, love this iteration of the Toronto Maple Leafs and I hope they do win, because it will be really fun if they do. But if they don’t, I’m still going to enjoy the entertainment they’ve provided and respect the sacrifices they made to make it happen.

I love this team. I love how they don’t quit. I love how if they do win, it won’t be cheap at all. I love how they’ve built a team and grown it through the years. It’s all very romantic and exciting. The thing is, and maybe I’m alone on this, but I don’t need them to win to be satisfied.

Getting a great team, and actually filling it with some of the best players alive is good enough for me. Hell, it’s superior to every single other Leafs team we’ve had the pleasure of watching. The Gilmour years were fun, they didn’t get it done. The early 2000 Sandin year, same thing.

This is even more fun, and there is still a chance they win.

I for one don’t care if they don’t. I know that when they face Tampa in the Spring, there’s only a 55% chance they win in the best of scenarios. Who cares? If they, as they always have, give it their all and do their best, that’s good enough for me.

I want the Toronto Maple Leafs to win. I just think it’s immature and dumb and silly and pathetic to make sports into an all or nothing, either/or proposition. We have been blessed to get to watch this team for the last seven years, and I hope they re-sign everyone and give us seven more.

Bizarre take and so over the top. Calling other immature and pathetic for having a different opinion? Kettle....meet pot. And I dont need the leafs to win it all to be satisfied...what I want is a team that plays with passion for themselves and for each other. Team above individuals in my perfect world. I dont see that with this group. Flame away if you must.

Absolutely never insulted you...
In fact, I was actually apologetic : )
nice chat
lol yea ok...."you really dont know what your talking about...sorry" "I doubt you even watch the games if you think that...sorry"

not condescending at all totally open for conversation

Forgive my gruff exterior
I just meant you seemed confused regarding how many years Tavares has been with the leafs and who/what in particular has been the problem for the Leafs come playoff time

I don't know, there are some people in the other threads talking about not even watching next season. There's something about the way we finally beat Tampa but then got clobbered by Florida that broke many fans. There's something a bit different this time.

People say the same.thibg after Columbus, and after the Habs series too. Easy to say in June. Less so in November

Lol. Good point.

June: "I'm so done with this team!"
Sept/Oct.: "Hey boys! Glad to be back and have NHL hockey again. I don't mind this team, but I'm not so sure about this starting goaltender, the leadership, the defence...".

Marner and Matthews most certainly crapped the bed in Florida.

Core players should have responded. Captain is soft as butter confirmed. There is no push back from any of the leaders though except maybe Morgan.

To me, my interest level did dropped a lot since the Habs series. Didn't really watch the regular season as much as previous years. Kind of got back into it this season due to their playoffs last year but that slow start and stuff got me back to okay level again. My interests picked up again during the TDL esp when ROR came. One more things to add, i have not gotten any Leafs stuff since the Habs series, normally I get at least a jersey and will attend their game when they come to Vancouver and also a few games in TO when I visit my folks. Ever since the Habs series, I only attended ONE Leafs game and thats the one in Vancouver after this season TDL where they gave up TWO SH goals in 20secs.

I feel sorry for the haters. If the Leafs keep the core together and then win it all, are the haters even going to enjoy it?
I don’t like these core guys at all but if they win I will certainly enjoy it.
I have said in the past I hope they prove me wrong but 7 years and counting and it’s been failure after failure

Yes, the core hasn't been changed... but nearly every other piece has been.

Starting this year, we will have what... five players that have been here for five years? There have been plenty of changes. 25-33% turnover every year.
Shouldn’t that tell you something about the core

Sport is about winning……..everything after T ball and tykes hockey is about winning.
Maybe we shouldn’t keeps score and give everyone a cup.
this is why there is no motivation from leafs management and ownership to win because so many fans are satis by watching Marner dipsy doodle and Matthews tear it up……until the games get tough then poof they are gone
