He has been pretty bad for NYr. Plus I doubt they plan to resign him so moving him now makes a lot of sense.

If they can get a 2nd for him like what Nashville got for Nyquist that would be amazing.

I can't recall is there already retention on Smith contract?

Nyquist was retained down to 1.6m That's why they got a 2nd

Penguins are retaining 25%
Riley Smith's current cap is 3.75, so NYR could retain 50% if needed to make that easier for teams to manage.

'26 or '27 2nd from Florida for a little reunion there? With Tkachuk out, he could adequately fill in there and then when he comes back, he'd probably slot in nicely next to Lundell/Luostarinen duo to shut down any and all offensive chances.

Reilly Smith was a monster against the Islanders in the 2016 first round playoffs

If Florida was gonna do that they may as well try and get Quick at the same time to be the backup.

The Rags got him for a 2nd during the summer. I dont think theyll be able to get to same value back

We gave up a 2nd & 5th for Smith.

He is having a better season that Nyquist, has been fairly strong defensively and is a much better and experienced play off player.

Should at least get the same as Nyquist as a starting point but maybe could get an additional late pick on top.

Lot of people taking shots at Smith and I don't really know why. The Rangers acquired him hoping he'd be that missing piece on the Kreider-Zibanejad line, but it didn't work out. As you all may have noticed, the Rangers have played like shit and basically everyone is having a bad year. And yet, Smith is on pace for 14/28/42, which is almost exactly what he did last year, while playing generally responsible defensively and killing penalties. He may not have been the lightning in a bottle the Rangers hoped for, but he has been totally fine. Of all the guys I'd complain about on the Rangers this year, I'm not sure he'd make the list.

Seems like a player the Bolts could be mildly interested in, but not one to go after with the trade deadline still several days away. Also not sure if the Bolts have anything that would truly interest the Rangers in a potential return. They probably get a better deal with someone else as a trade partner, so I doubt that’s where he ends up. Was fun to think about for half a minute though.

There isn’t a trade done. My general view is that guys get held out of the lineup once their team’s minimum expectation for the trade return has been met. There is still negotiating going on, though, and a trade could take another few days.

I guess but we knew Nyquist was going to Minnesota almost right away

We knew shortly after it became public that Nyquist wasn’t playing, but that decision could have been made many hours earlier. Hell, it could’ve been made Friday night. Negotiations were on going in that period of time, and the timing just happened to work out where the Predators accepted Minnesota’s offer shortly after the Nyquist scratch was made public.

Nyquists value came from the fact he had 75 points last year.
