I think if they were inside the wild card we don't see these moves take place, regardless of how little impact it has on the team. Drury wanted to make a splash early in the season and it back fired on them. The plan wasn't to just sell all UFA's because guys like Riley Smith aren't players you worry about losing for nothing. Getting further and further away from that wild card spot, Fox getting injured, and watching other teams continue to win definitely pushed them into acknowledging that it's not likely this season.

He's not taking 5M of the cap, or costing any team 5m in salary.

All moving the UFAs does is acknowledge they’re not contenders. Drury isn’t much concerned about this season and hasn’t been for a long time at this point.

They’re not “getting further and further away from a wild card spot” either. They’re very much in that race.

My guess is that Drury thinks they can get back to the playoffs next year. That like last year was like the peak years for a number of them this year almost everyone had a down year. I'd say he's betting that Lafreniere, Trocheck, Fox and Igor will at least revert to some kind of mean and all be better. Improvement might also come from changing out a coaching staff and improving the defense not only personnel wise but structure wise.

If you think like that and the Rangers own history---such as falling far short of expectations in '93 to win the Cup in '94 to almost not make the playoffs in '95 it's not like shit like that can't happen. So keeping an earlier pick in 25 over a later pick in 26 might turn out a net positive. Whatever the case I don't see the Rangers falling even further than they have. Maybe they don't improve much though. The quality of this draft vs. next year's might also be something to think about.

I have the sense as well that this team is embarrassed by the year they've had. What remains of it will have a long summer to think about that......think about and prepare....not come into next year thinking they're world beaters or on the cusp which they clearly weren't. I also think the addition of JT might help us a lot too. This year's Rangers team badly needed an asshole or Alpha personality. I think Trouba and Goodrow have that but their on ice play wasn't up to it anymore.

I mean the east doesn't look overly strong, he might be right.

How can they come back strong?

Ziba, Panarin aren’t going to carry you through the East
Maybe they could if trading for picks now and then using those picks at the draft to trade for established players? So get a second for Smith and build up the assets for big moves at the draft?
Rangers have an older core.

that’s if those two are even on the team next season. And the Rangers don’t exactly have players in the pipeline to replace those guys

This is a multi year project to be good again, whether or not Ranger fans want to believe it

Didn’t Vegas get Pietrangelo in free agency?
yeah and what about it?

The Rangers have holes in multiple aspects of their core that would need to be addressed in free agency.

The teams who win have their core drafted and developed typically, not bought in the summer

Well we all know successful winners are bought and built in free agency so lol
We have pieces already. We are just replacing Mika and Kreider, maybe Panarin. If we have the money will will spend.

again, not a rebuild so i dont know why you would expect us to create a team completely of home grown players. Teams like that have been sitting outside the playoffs for a decade.

Who in the Vegas core was drafted by them? Imo clubs can build a core through free agency and trades. The Rangers are a place players desire. They can attract top free agents. Make a couple smart trades and they could make a quick turnaround.

Assuming the Rangers aren't on his 13-trade M-NTC, Domi's going back as part of a deal with Toronto to make the cap work. Toronto also throws in a 2nd or other mid-value asset.

(Sorry Rangers fans, didn't mean to scare you ... Very unlikely this is going to be the trade. The upside if it really happened is that Domi always starts strong with a new team before completely falling of the face of the earth, just like he has this year)

Rangers selling and holding out trade pieces while senile Lou keeps playing Nelson and Palmieri risking injury because he has no intent on trading them. FML.

Just looking at the D--it was a short summer because going to the conference finals. Fox for one was clearly banged up throughout the playoffs. He got married over the summer as well and maybe he didn't put enough work into rehabbing his knee. Trouba's declining and Lindgren always banged up himself and a guy who's always battling above his weight class. The stuff with Goodrow and Trouba went badly through the locker room and the team on the whole thought they were a lot better than they actually were. I think Housley has not worked well at all with this year's group of defenders. Between late November and all of December the Rangers were getting badly outplayed by pretty nearly all comers. Sometimes massively outshot, too many defensive breakdowns and soft plays. It became a very fragile group. Identity and belief are essential for any good team to have. This team lost its way and even though it found a way to get back into a playoff chase---it's a lot because other teams in the East were struggling too. And for us I'd say most fans know what chasing a game means and you usually lose---we've done way too much of that and it's turned into chasing a season.

I doubt Domi is traded . You gotta deal with his struggles but he’s not useless

I’m sure you also thought the caps were cooked last year. Seem to have done quite a turnaround this year with trades and in the UFA market…
