IMO they have to. With the JT Miller trade they can lose this year, keep their pick - and then give PIT their 1st next year.

But with no first next year you have to go all in
Not if we finish in 19th or above 😉

I want us to give Pens the pick this year. Anything after around 5th pick is a major drop off and then again after around 8th pick. With next years pick stacked, that should be the best time to use the 1st.

Agree to measure a GM with results of the team. I don’t get the full on Drury hate with Smith.

I thought acquiring Smith was a great move. Two- way RW, expiring contract, great playoff performer. One of many guys this year I can’t fathom why they’ve been so bad.

And, another player who I would easily take at the TDL if I’m a contender.

The Nyquist return seems commensurate here. Similar stats, usage, age. Both finesse wingers with some two-way versatility and playoff experience. Neither having a good year but could easily slot into a competative team’s middle six with little fuss.

Nyquist contract was cheaper though so Rangers would need to retain.

Shouldn’t get more than a 3rd…probably will net a 2nd if New York retains him down.

We have pieces already. We are just replacing Mika and Kreider, maybe Panarin. If we have the money will will spend.

again, not a rebuild so i dont know why you would expect us to create a team completely of home grown players. Teams like that have been sitting outside the playoffs for a decade.
You’re talking about replacing the top 3 forwards on this team, on top of acquiring a top pairing LD in one summer.

Sounds super realistic.

Again, my larger point is that I don’t have as much faith this is a one summer turnaround back to Stanley cup contender. It’s going to take time

Atta boy Chris! Asset management at it's finest. Everybody in the league knew this guy was cooked, except you apparently.

"In this Master Class, I'll show you how to turn a 2nd and a 7th into a 7th"

Pens moved him to Rangers and he is a Ok winger but not at that AAV. Rangers finish lower than 14 they keep the pick. I willing to risk the 2026 pick as Rangers may just drop like a rock next year with aging forward group and a goalie that has to play at an elite level. My gut is to many changes will be needed in Ranger land to be good next year.

Feels like this could be us (Columbus) as he's a similar player to Nyquist who can be had in the bargain bin. Waddell wants to show the kids some faith but we don't wanna spend the first on the higher premium rentals right now.

Maybe they could if trading for picks now and then using those picks at the draft to trade for established players? So get a second for Smith and build up the assets for big moves at the draft?
Rangers have an older core.

For them to be at the top next year they’d need a legit difference maker in his prime

I don’t know how they are going to land that player realistically

Ziba in -26 is going to get abused in the playoffs, then I’ve never been the biggest fan of Panarin in the biggest moments of the playoffs and he’ll be 35y in -26

Could see Ottawa for this one

Again, I would be surprised if the Rangers sent him to a team they’re competing with for a playoff spot.

Probably going out west.

Quick retool and come back next year strong ?
Yes, the culture of this team was always going to change by mid-2020s based on contracts and cap.

I expect Drury to invest in D this summer (Gryzlik and Gavrikov) and add one depth piece up front.

Smith will get a 2nd and 5th or two 3rd with salary retained. He's been fine this year and good on the PK.
