I get sick of this deliberately misleading stiff.
Drafted Dahlin, tried tonkill his development with the Krueger hire.
Rushed Mitts' development, nearly killing it.
Traded for Skinner, extended him, hired a coach determined to bury Skinner's career.
Traded for Tage (and Svobotka, and Berglund), and then reportedly tried to trade Tage for a 5th.
I mean, I don't love what GMTM did, but Botterill should not g3t credit for much.
He basically left a crater in the ground that Adams and Granato have been filling in with compost dirt

Granato’s entire Sabres head coaching career has been making Botterill look less stupid.

which makes Botterill hiring Krueger look like the ultimate stupidity

The ONLY bad thing about firing Botterill is that it meant hiring another GM with no pressure to perform for years.

Murray is the all-time worst GM in Sabres history. Not even close. He was so bad I've always been convinced he sabotaged the Sabres on purpose, because I refuse to believe somebody hired for that position was actually that incompetent. I think a lot of people who were conned by Murray thereby downplay the terrible situation Botterill walked into. Looking back on it though I don't understand how that's still possible. Evander Kane. Robin Lehner. Missing on Draisaitl. You look back and it's all a disaster. There's nothing good left behind from him.

Somewhere I have a document where I tallied all of Tim Murray’s trades, and what ultimately we have to show for it. It’s so embarrassing, it has to be the ultimate example of how to not manage assets.

What's the checklist on what we missed out on? Nothing he traded amounted to much

I did that myself a while back. It was like reviewing a poker session by a player on tilt, watching him blow his chips in one long, slow burnout.

The thing that really bugged me about Botts was an interview he gave a while after where he talked about his time with the Sabres and he basically made it sound like he was interning with the organization. Like, "oh, it was a different experience, having high picks compared to where the Pens usually were drafting during my time there." No shit, genius, the team friggin sucked under your tenure and you literally sat back and did nothing while they nosedived into an unprecedented free-fall

I don't know why I feel like rejoining this discussion of which I had almost repressed all memory, but...

Murray is to Botterill as Krueger is to Housley. All incompetent, but for the first two in each list you almost suspect it was intentional just because of how confident they acted the whole time. Like they were either trolling or running some sort of behavioral study in the background.

His comments about how he would have liked to have tried some things out with their lineup always left me incredulous. Dude, you were the BOSS. You can recall people. You can make it clear to the f***wits you put behind the bench that you need to see a recall in the lineup and playing. He instead acted like it wasn't anything he had any power over. They never did anything to find out what they had.

And I think I expressed my displeasure at his hiring and retention of both Phil and Ralph. The damage done to the talent he did have or acquired is still being unwound.

I look at Murray’s tenure and wonder what the hell he was thinking with some of his decisions. He was obviously a “I have to have him” guy, who frequently was adding pieces to make sure he got a deal done.

I still look back at the 2 2nds for Fasching and Dlo and shake my head. You really were that high on a recent 4th rounder and a 10-15 prospect to trade 2 2nd round picks to make it happen?

I sometimes wonder if Tim is well as a human.

Fasching was a U20 darling - shows that sometimes not paying attention to a club team year doesn't help assessment on a player. It was like they didn't scout him at Minnesota at all. A real kicker? LA used one of those 2nds on Eric Cernak. Yeah. That guy.

And McNabb

No team in first place in the NHL at halloween had ever missed the playoffs. Botterill's team was in first after Thanksgiving and missed by 20+ points. He sat there and watched them fall that whole way, Sobotka playing 2C that whole time.
I'm a bit dumbfounded that people point at some good players (today) he acquired while they sucked during his tenure largely because he was complete ass at development.

Have people forgotten how terribly he botched Mitts and Thompson's development? He almost single-handedly ruined them. Dont even get me started on his roster building because he clearly had no vision and threw shit at the wall hoping it'd stick.

It's one area (drafting AND developing) I really am impressed with Adams and co, and it's the most important aspect in building a contender, imo. Adams has his faults, but if he learns on the fly, then he'll be great for us.

Yeah. I get hating Murray, dude was completely drunk with how he used assets, but half of his tenure involved a directive to purposely make the worst team in the league, and then to climb out of that which he did with a season no sabre team matched til this year. So while he is terrible, the sample I have of Botterill has a much larger impact on me. I hated everything he ever did or said, from the moment he did or said it, and was never not vindicated for doing so.

God I loved his press conferences though.

GMTM was a complete disaster but I'd subscribe to his podcast. Hopefully he'd drink while doing it. Bonus if he's recording from the Bada Bing.
