Friedman: Red Wings interested in Dylan Cozens

I'd want Cozens and can understand completely the apparent interest SY has in him. Even if Year 3 for him was an outlier due to shooting pct, it was still a good season for a 21yo who does more than just produce points. It was also a natural progression for him from his first two years and no reason at the time of his new contract to think he wouldn't continue improving. Fans are stuck in the here and now of his struggles since then and the obvious under-performance relative to Cap hit, but there are some obvious issues in Buffalo that get in the way of young players being successful. Of course there is risk in acquiring him, but there's also the potential of a significant payoff. Fans who don't want any risk in their team's acquisitions are out of touch with reality.

The problem is not that Detroit might be interested in a fair deal, it's that the right deal for Buffalo may require giving up more than Cozens if the goal is immediate and lasting roster improvement. Detroit doesn't have that calibre of player available for trade. We're keeping them. The best asset Detroit could give would be a protected first-rounder, plus whatever. If Buffalo isn't interested, then a trade won't happen. Cozens is not a Cap dump and isn't going to be acquired for scraps. A lot of the Detroit fan noise about this "40 point" player is just nonsense.
