yeah, I explore way more than I do missions each day. If I play for 4 or 5 hours on a saturday I maybe do 1 mission the rest im exploring and trying to collect stuff. I hunted the legendary moose yesterday and I shot it in the river, I couldn't skin it. I spent the next hour bumping it with my horse trying to push it to shore to skin it that was ****ing annoying.

Tip for others don't kill a legendary animal near water it is such a pain in the ass to get them out
Same here, man. I've been going after legendary animals, as well as trying to get a perfect pelt from pretty much any animal I can come across. I would recommend buying all of the trinkets that you can from hunting as soon as you get each legendary animal. They've all got passive permanent effects that can help you out. I've taken down about 8 or 9 legendary animals and 3 legendary fish so far.

Edit: Last night I took out the Legendary Buck and to show off my trophy kill I decided to take the buck to St. Denis trapper in the crowded market. I greeted various folk while carrying the legendary stag and no one seemed to notice that I had a massive dead Trophy Buck on my shoulder. I took it to the trapper's cart and tossed it onto the ground in front of a group of 4 fellers. Three of them appeared rather perturbed, scuttling away quickly, while one member of the group simply sat there and watched as I skinned this Hallowed Deer in the middle of this bustling marketplace. The man watched on with a look of sick satisfaction as a marketplace pig scurries over and starts picking at the dead, skinned carcass of the Legendary buck. It was quite an experience and I'm glad that I photographed it in-game.

Oh oh heres another question. I purchased the lock breaker. I have no idea how to use it. Ive gone to some doors, and a jail cell, and it never actually equips. If I use the weapon wheel to equip it and hit a trigger it just switches back to a gun.

Is there any point to this item whatsoever?

I have only been prompted for it once early in the game. I save a random stage coach that was being robbed and the driver said I could have what was in the lock box but when I went to open it I needed the lock breaker but I had not progressed far enough to be able to buy one.

I've had to give up on the arabian horse. I think my game is glitched. I refuse to believe it's suppose to be this difficult or I'm that stupid. Can I buy it or a horse just as good?

Any comparable horse is going to be available later in the game and will be pretty expensive.

Are you having a hard time finding it, or is it breaking the horse that is the problem?

I've been able to lock pick a very few doors but I also had the option of kicking them down so I'm tempted to say that the lock pick is useless.

In fact, most of everything in this game is utterly useless: you can very easily get by by using only the starting pistol. Great world but the lack of meaningful progression has really put a big damper on the experience for me. As it stands, I'm struggling to finish the game since there is nothing, gameplay wise, to look forward to or get excited about and I have so much money that bounties are just "sure, I'll shoot all the lawmen and then pay the 100 dollar bounty cause why not?".

This is one game that could really, really benefit from more RPG mechanics and dialogue trees.

Breaking it. I've tried everything. I really do think it's glitched. It won't let me track it even when I see it running in front of me like no run path showing up. Sometimes my lock on doesn't work and it's spooked even when I did nothing. Sometimes I get on and it's say press x to calm while giving me left stick instructions. I get bucked off the same way everytime to the back left no matter which direction I push.

yeah I tried that, lasso wouldn't catch it was so deep barely the top of the mooses antler was above the water. I tried lassoing for about 20 mins before I used the horse. Also reloading from last autosave puts the moose in shallower water, still cant skin it but less of a push needed with the horse.

Im not sure if maybe the moose is too big to lasso out of the water, I was reading the legendary bison sometimes dies in water too and people couldn't lasso that either

I've been doing a combination of side missions like bounties, strangers, and main missions to prolong the game for me - I believe I am close to the end of Chapter III (did the Grey and Brathwaite missions side by side). So far my favourite has been tracking down the gunslingers.

I haven't been hunting too much because I don't know what to honestly do, but would like to start because the trapper has some awesome outfits I want to get. What are the best ways of getting perfect pelts? I read one site where it says to lasso the animal and knife it which gives you a perfect, but I did that and all it has been is "good" every time.

The same thing happened to me. Knifed a 3 star deer but when i skinned it, it was poor condition. I read there's a trinket you can get that increases your chances of getting perfect pelts. Or maybe it was decreases the rate it degrades. Can't recall now.

You can still shoot the locks off to break them.

Interesting!

I had shot a deer and it died in the middle of a river so I tried the lasso to bring it back to shore and it worked. It very well might be related to the size of the animal.

The legendary elk gives you the trinket that improves pelts.

The best way to get a perfect pelt is to kill the animal with the recommended weapon in their description in the compendium/when you have the info pop up (when you press R1 after locking on to a species you have already studied). For most of the animal who aren't small you want to use a rifle.

Not all animals have perfect pelts, that's something the game doesn't explain all that well.

After you have studied the species, take the time to spot an animal and "inspect it" with R1. A box will open with a small description and the recommended method of killing alongside the name of the animal. For the animal to be able to give you a perfect pelt it needs to have "pristine" in it's name. Otherwise, it won't drop a perfect pelt even if you were to kill it with your mind.

Wasn't there something in the hunting tutorial that if you use the Varmint rifle it leaves less damage to the pelt due to a smaller entry wound which would give you a better pelt status?

**** lol. well now I know for next time

Yeah when I did that side mission you were talking about with the stagecoach I initially was like oh f*** I can’t get in to the lockbox. I just decided to shoot to lock to see what happens and was surprised it worked

There was!

The Varmint rifle should be used on small animals if the Bow isn't an option, aim for the head though obviously. I found with most animals, to get a perfect pelt I had to kill them with shots pretty much between or around the eyes. I shot a Cougar with the Bolt Action Rifle earlier, one bullet to the head and it gave me a perfect pelt. When it comes to large animals like Bears and even a Cow (yes I killed a Cow), they take a ridiculous amount of bullets to kill and more often than not, one or two bullets will hit it around the underbelly or side which will see the pelt end up either as good or poor. Using a shotgun is not a good idea either obviously, kills them quicker but ruins the pelt.

Everyone seen the KKK yet? I was gonna mow them down but figured they’d probably make for good entertainment if I just let em continue. I made the right choice.
