Would love to see Tavares here but I doubt Buttons speculation is accurate. JT has been such a loyal guy to the Islanders since he was drafted. I just don't believe he would sign a contract with their biggest rival. He might not stay on Long Island...but I just don't see him playing for NYR.

Regarding Hank. The window is obviously closing for a Cup with the Rangers. As quick as that window is closing so is the window of a hefty return on the Trade market. I would assume 1st rounder, a high level prospect former 1st rounder, and a top prospect or some sort of a cap dump. But...That doesn't seem to be an option for the NY Rangers.

I think this club is looking at a playoff birth season with a quick 1st or 2nd round exit and a 2018 19th overall pick. Mired in mediocrity again.

Trading Brian Leetch was one of the worst things this franchise has done to the fan base. I don't want to repeat that with Lundquist. He should end his career with the Rangers.

I don't know about that.

1. I had a problem with Sather being allowed to make that trade. It was a very unpopular guy trading a wildly popular guy.

2. It certainly wasn't handled well

3. It looks worse in hindsight because the return won't up being lousy.

If the Rangers had done well in the trade it would be remembered differently.

If last year's play is any indication, Hank's game is very likely declining. I'd trade him now before the fans start getting on him. His contract is horrible anyway. If the right offer came along, I'd help pack his bags. I might be the only one seriously concerned about our goaltending next year and not just because of Pavelec. Leetch won a Cup here, Hank didn't yet and probably never will.

What I ****ing love about our situation right now is that once Hank is gone we are still in a good spot as a team. Still have a great young team ready to go for Shesty. We could have our own Red Wings-esque streak of playoff appearances. Just need that cup though..

Not really. Everyone loved Leetch, that's a given. But the club was headed into some dark times. Leetch was and still is among my favorite NYR players all time.

The building will still be full after Hanks departure, just like it was in the years they consistently missed the playoffs. It will sting. Then people will get over it. At the end of the day this is a business.

Loved Brian Leetch, but I never understood that logic aside from just being a homer for Leetch.

He had played pretty awful since 1998, and the Rangers traded him at the end of a contract, during a house cleaning, to a pretty strong Maple Leaf team, before an impending lockout and possible collapse of the NHL itself.

And he could have signed with the Rangers after the lockout, but h decided to sign in Boston for his last and meh… season.

Leetch was one of the best Rangers ever, but he was a little childish about the whole thing. It had less to do with being a Ranger, and it had more to do with him not wanting to play the post season.

I mean Messier "burried the hatchet" when he was let go 3 years after winning the cup coming off a 36 goal season one year removed from a 47 goal season because the Rangers brass didn't like his contract terms and were gunning for Joe Sakic.

Richter was retiring, Graves was gone in 2003, and Messier was finishing before the lockout.

In regard to Lundqvist, I think he's the greatest drafted Ramger ever , but if they sent him to a team where he could win a cup, I don't see the problem.

How will you keep your post count up if Lundqvist isn't on the team anymore.

You've had more posts riding his ass than Nevesis praising him.

We drafted at 6 and 19 that year but there was a pretty big drop off after the top 3-4 guys. The guy we (and others) missed was Mike Green near the end of the first round. It wasn't a great draft year. We did get Mike Sauer the next year with the 2nd round pick.

This. The dark times were the 7 years BEFORE they traded Leetch. Look, that trade sucked for any Ranger fan. Leetch was my favorite player growing up and to watch a massive failure up to that point like Sather ship him off hurt. Moreso, in a vacuum, the return of the trade sucked.

But Ill always view it as a more symbolic "changing of the guard" type of trade that led to some prosperity (by this franchise's standards) after the lockout. At the end of the day, this is a business, and I can certainly see the same type of thing happening to Lundqvist in his late 30's with a big time cap hit.

Often overlooked is that trade gave Brian a chance to play in the playoffs for the first time in 6 years.

The problem would be.....how many of us would cry happy tears for the individual getting what he always wanted......but NOT for the team he (and we) loves.

With regard to Leetch, I don't think he was ever the same after that injury in the '97 playoffs.

Essentially he was done as a truly elite player at the age of 29.

From 1988-97, he was in that top echelon of players, especially among defenseman. But he seemed to get old very quickly, while other guys maintained or at least adapted their game.

Even looking back, I am amazed at how he seemed to descend from the elite.

Age and injuries never help anyone so Leetch declined a bit but for 2.5 seasons 2001-2003 before his second ankle injury I felt he was playing really well.

Scenario... You're Gorton and taking the roster in a different direction for the next few seasons and have agreed with Lundqvist to trade him to a team in the hopes he wins the cup within the next 2-3 years.
What team and what do you ask for in return? This is right now. Not during the season or next off-season... I can't help but think of a team like Edmonton.

Edm:
Cam Talbot
Kailer Yammamoto and a 3rd

Or Cam Talbot and 2018 1st rounder and a 2nd

I'd call it a dead heat.

My favorite Snowcloud posts are when something like a bad pass or a bad goal or a bad defensive transgression occurs, he calls it the worst play he has ever seen.

I think he is also 1 of about 5 posters that regularly threaten to never watch another game after a bad game, period, and sometimes even 1 single event.

He is easily one of my favorite posters to read.

Rangers are still going to be a win now team, as evident by the Shattenkirk signing, but Gorton has done a real solid job integrating young talent into this team both via the draft (brady, buch, chytil, Anderssen) as well as college free agents like Vesey. Doing a pretty fine job.
