Rebuilding On The Fly

Pretty serious. What has Pionk done to tell you that he is ready to be an every day defenseman? Or Brezgalav? I do not say that these were wasted signings, but I am not ready to believe that they farm outlook has changed because of the two of them

Same goes for the picks. Sure, they could be great. Or they could be Hugh Jessiman. It is far too early to tell. These are not sure things. To stat that our prospect pool got MUCH better, you can only do so on basis of having a draft where we actually got to draft in the first round. Is it better? Sure, based on hopes, dreams and some potential. Is it MUCH better? Hardly.

So as of today, I still see the farm as barren. Maybe a few years from now, there will be a steady pipeline. But I do not see that as of today.

Well the fact that they're not proven is what makes them prospects. Talented prospects = not barren.

From a defensive standpoint I'm not sure what else you can ask for. Besides Pionk/Bereglazov there's also Graves, Day, Zborovskiy, Pedrie, hell Gilmour looked good enough last preseason for a cup of coffee if the need arises. Forward depth needs to improve but we're looking pretty solid on the backend.

Let's just take one as example. What makes Pionk a "talented prospect"? The fact that he was signed by the Rangers? Or the fact that he was signed at all? In which case, no farm system is ever barren. Fine. Next to barren? Very thin? Which verbiage should we use?

Both Pionk and Bereglazov have been very successful at their respective levels of hockey, enough to constitute an NHL projection. That's why we're excited - because they've done things.

Both are longshots to start opening night, but the thought is not unrealistic.

Uh, the skating and the offense from the back end? He played a bunch on the NCAA runner up last year. He wasn't super old (21) ala Matt Gilroy and pretty much everyone was in on him.

Ditto Beargloves, except hes a bit older and he did it in the 2nd best league on the planet.

They didn't just add those 2, they added another high ceiling RHD who has already gotten NHL action and 2 other C's in the 1st round a few weeks ago. Thats 5 guys who weren't a part of this team's system 3 months ago.

There isn't a whole lot up front but they're pretty solid as far as D prospects go and great in goal. The system isn't nearly as barren as you want to paint it to be.

I posted about it before he signed. Last year I said the Rangers biggest miss would be Luke Stetcher... he's in the NHL as a top 4.

Before Pionky signed, I said he'd be the best baby UFA the Rangers could pick up. There was a bidding war for him.

Some guys mature physically at a later date than others. It happens. Once Pionk did, his game really took off.

This kid will get a look see at the NHL sooner than you think. His game fits the modern NHL. If he can reduce mistakes, and win net front battles with guile, you've got an NHLer.

All the other tools are there... skating, puck moving.. 4-way lateral agility... passing... he's an excellent passer... he's smart too.

Think RHD Del Zotto, with better mobility but lacks what a focused DZ could bring physically.

Pionk was one of the most sought-after UDFAs on the market. I'm sure if you Googled it you'd find plenty of information on the player and his strengths. He was a big signing.

Same for Bereglazov. Extremely sought-after. Played at a very high level in the KHL last season. Widely considered NHL-ready or close to it.

There's plenty out there on these two guys. You don't need to have it spoon-fed to you here.

The system is probably average, maybe slightly below. Thin up front behind the top guys. Very solid in terms of the defensive prospects. Excellent goalie prospects.

If you think Pionk and Bereglazov are just some random prospects, you must not have been paying attention.
