Buff had 2 years remaining when he retired.
Copp and Ladd were both TD deals.
I could see them hanging on to Scheif and Helle until the TD and moving them then. Not too worried about being in a PO spot and losing them after the season. That is possible, but PLD was a big part of our hot start that carried us into the PO last year. Without him, I don't think that will be a problem.

Keeping them won't encourage me to buy more tickets.
I get doing that with Scheifele, but trying to deal Helle only at the deadline would be just about the dumbest idea imaginable, because 1) if a team needs goaltending in March, they're likely not a buyer anyway, and 2) we all know that Chevy is going to talk himself into "one last run" and keep Helle for our own playoff push, whatever that looks like.

So seems to indicate that the Market may not be great for our assets other then Helle. Seems to think the Jets might be ok with a platoon situation. Want to get bigger and more physical on defense.

The most interesting thing was that it seems other GMs don't seem to be too interested in signing Mark to a big long term deal which may may force the team and him into an extension as we likely will give him that deal. Or atleast that is how I interpreted that exchange.

St. Louis Blues have been continually retooling and it got them a cup. Carolina never really did a rebuild and they are a top team. The same can be Said for Dallas, they have retooled on the fly to their younger core.

StL yes.

Carolina is a hard one to pigeonhole. Of key players on their current team, they have drafted Necas and Jarvis up front and Slavin and Pesce on D. Oops, missed Svechnikov on IR. CF says they signed Aho even though he was their drafted player. They only have 6 other drafted players to go along with 13 signed, 9 traded for and 1 offer sheet. I'd say they lucked out getting Aho at 35 OA and built around him through FA and trade. Given the relatively short time most have been with them, I'd call it a rebuild, even though they never really tanked. They replaced most of their core. I call that a rebuild.

Dallas' retool was mostly the result of one very successful draft class. It isn't like they went out and performed a planned retool. They just kept trading wildly, drafting poorly until that draft bailed them out. Is that a retool?

They were able to bring Pavelski,Marchment,Suter,Miller etc.. we just can't do that with UFAs. When you can add depth like that you can be really good.

We signed Gagner and Stenlund this year. Were never going to be able to do what a Dallas can do. Find guys at those levels that will sign to augment your roster.

Pavelski was great the other guys are Meh at best. Dallas do get a look at all the free agents but this new rebooted team is all about 4 draft picks.

I think we are arguing semantics. To me a rebuild is when you trade now pieces for futures and rest your teams age group and bottom out for a fee years.

To me a retool is when you make changes to your current core with th goal of staying competitive.

I don’t think any of these guys will be happy campers with a plan of playing out the season with the plan of being a TDL chip. If you want a new direction Chevy needs to be decisive and make changes now. Playing it back begs for another season of dysfunction and likely a growing list of unhappy players.

Out of those Pavelski is the only that provides much positive value. I am not shedding any tears over losing out on the other 3. Marchment contract already looks rough (and the Jets could have gotten him anyways if they were willing to give him $s and term). Cup contenders are not built on July 1st, future buyouts and capdumps at the cost of significant assets are built on July 1st.

Also just this season the following guys went into training camp unsigned or passed through waivers... guys the Jets could have signed to bolster their depth (and who are also younger):

Daniel Sprong

Sonny Milano

Emil Bemstrom

That's an entire NHL bottom-6 line that was available for basically league minimum. There are many ways to build a roster. If the Jets believe they can't bolster their depth via UFA, they need to be willing to think outside the box rather than do the same crap as 31 other teams. The Jets absolutely cannot be content with bets on guys like Saku, Kuhlman, AJF in their bottom-6.

The point though is they CAN sign those guys we can't. Whether they pan out or not.

We dumpster dive as best we can and sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't

Lets look at it this way. Lets say we move all of PLD/Scheif/Helly and buyout Wheeler or trade him. Are we ever in any of the top 10 UFAs out there?

Something is obviously wrong in Jet land ... ownership, GM or players?
It all started when Buff quit, then Laine wants to be traded, Stastny comes out about the locker room, Maurice quits, PLD does not want to be here, now Helly ... if this keeps up its only a matter of time that the Jets will get a bad rap and good luck trying to get any players to come to Winnipeg.

The events and commentary from this team post 18-19 POs truly is something.

So let's say Dubois goes to LA for a package around Vilardi and Arvidsson

Wed then have something like this:

Conner Vilardi xxx/Ehlers
Nino Perfetti xxxx/Ehlers
Yyyy Lowry Arvidsson

We'd need xxxx to be an impact player I'd think.

Need a middle 6 player as well in some of the other trades.

Oh I agree we don’t get a look. We do miss the upside on guys they hit on and also miss the downside of expensive UFA’s that bust. That is why it is essential the Jets keep focusing on the draft. Its the only way in this market but at least there is a way.

I am ready for change even if it’s a step back. We gave it a shot for half a decade with the existing core and they couldn’t get it done. Their contracts have created an opportunity for them to move on and its time. I have mixed emotions about it but we weren’t winning with this core so why keep beating a dead horse.

I will need to see what the deal compositions look like before I can gauge how I feel. The more future leaning the better but I am prepared for anything.

The TDL might be exciting and June up to the draft might be too. The actual hockey games, not at all.

Really bittersweet. I love the possibility of burning it down and seeing what can spring from the ashes. On the other hand, Scheifele was our first pick ever and we've had a lot of great moments watching him grow, so it's tough to let go. Seeing Helle go from Echl to Vezina has been pretty neat too

Tough to say they’re going to be competitive so rebuild it is
