What type of player does Nemec turn out to be?

I assume Like Hughes will be their main dman on PP1 for many years so will Nemec be more of a P2 type guy and PK type guy that kinda does everything? He doesn't hit or pims but I did notice he finished the season with a high total of blocked shots

I'm very curious about NJ over the next few years and how their d core turns out.

How many points do you guys feel he will average each season?

His stats last season were...

60gp 3g. 16a. -7. 33pims. 22hits. 73sog. 105blks.

Averaged just under 20 mins a game, just over 1 min of PP time per game and just under 1 min of PK a game

Will see. He played 19+ min as 19 yo defenseman. He is good defensively and potential is really bigger. Yes, he will be minutes eater, he fights for the puck through the board, he defends on the move, he is bloking the space. And he has good transitioning potential, he already made enough interesting playmaking decisions.
So even without pp1 role his potential is bigger than 45-50 points as two way defenseman who will play hard minutes if everything will go in the same direction. His ceiling is better but in his case its too early to talk how real could be to hit it for him. Luke will take some pp time no matter what so its hard to pencil him as potential 65+ points defenseman. It still not a problem and Devils don't have a big need.

Is Nemec that sound defensively?

He’s obviously still learning and had some lapses last year, but overall, he’s already pretty solid and looks like he’s trending well there.

He’s not flashy, but he makes smart puck decisions and is positionally sound.

As far as offensively, I think he could be a 40-50 point producer at his peak.

Ya in the games I saw this season on TV, I keep thinking he will be a 0.5 ppg type dman every year while playing alot of mins and in all situations with some PP and PK

Exactly. I don’t think he ends up being truly elite at any one thing, but just consistent and good to really good at just about everything.

I know he's real young for a D-man but the last time I saw him play the Habs I was underwhelmed. I tried to key on him for the whole game because everyone was going on and on about him but was unimpressed. Then again same thing with Evan Bouchard last year and he seemed to me very uneven so what do I know.

Dan Hamhuis type of top pairing guy whose offensive game will be held back in developing due to other specialists on his team absorbing those minutes (Suter and Weber on Nashville, Bieksa/Edler/Ehrhoff/Salo at different times on Vancouver)

If you’re looking to be wowed by Nemec it’s not going to happen. He plays an unspectacular looking game that gets great results.

Sounds like he's going to similar to Heiskanen in the sense that he'll be so efficient that people end up underrating him.

I think the big difference between them is that Heiskanen’s a freak skater. Nemec is really smooth and has great four way mobility but in terms of explosiveness and top end speed he’s average while Heiskanen can fly

I see a Paul Martin type player, if he continues his trajectory. Likely a bit more offensive pop than Martin.

Complete all around. Maybe not exceptional anywhere, but not particularly deficient at any one aspect of his game.

Martin was one of the best defensive Dmen in the game for years. Maybe in terms of playing an understated game there’s a similarity but Nemec leans way more offensively than Martin and I doubt he’s ever as good defensively

It's tough to compare them in my view given the age disparity when they first started playing NHL games. Martin was much further along after three full years of college. Poor Nemec was only given one year of AHL seasoning. I expect in two years Nemec will really up his game compared to where it is now.

I think Nemec can have an overall impact like Martin but I imagine it’d be more with the offense and defense flipped in comparison.

I think if Nemec can improve his first step and acceleration a touch he will be very good defensively. I don't recall many instances where he was fooled even if there were one or two spots where he was caught a bit flat footed. Presumably that will fade with experience.

He probably will eventually be very good defensively and Martin’s offensive playdriving was also very good. Elite offensive playdriving and very good defensive in Nemec vs elite defensive playdriving and very good offensive in Martin

Yeah, Heiskanen is my comparable for Nemec in the sense that I think their play styles are very similar. Very cerebral, controlling the play, smooth, all situations, high IQ, very good skaters and very good in transition/play driving. Nemec’s game ressembles Heiskanen’s very much imo.

But as you said, Nemec is a very good skater, but Heiskanen is legitimately one of the better skaters in the league. So I think their play styles are very similar, but Nemec isn’t as fast, even though he’s a good skater. That’s still an excellent player to have.

Add Luke, Casey and Silayev to that. That’s a very exciting mix of high potential D-men.
