MacKinnon really had nowhere to go there but yeah you couldn't have asked for much better of a player to make a nice first hit against. Dude is massive. Really exciting to think we could possibly have a better defenseman in the future than Seider. Future on the back end looks incredible.

He looked really solid for a debut. Smoked Mackinnon, had another good hit behind the net, made a few really nice passes on the breakout including a sweet stretch pass to Erne.

He needs to keep progressing but yesterday he looked like a future top pairing guy for sure

NHL.com only credited him with 1 hit.

The NHL is weird about crediting hits, the one behind the net wasnt amazing by any means but he put someone on their ass
He was very good tonight.

Lalonde said post game he was the wings best dman tonight. Sounds like he could be getting sent down as early as tomorrow once injuries figure themselves out unfortunately

Slight concern about his ability to stay healthy. He doesn't necessarily miss a lot of games, but in the past 2 years there seems to be a lot of times where he is mentioned as being hurt or taking a day off for a minor thing.

Impressive. Redwings gonna be stacked on the backend. That’s the kind of d that will win you a cup.
Didn’t the Penguins win a Cup with the star-studded d core of Maata, Streit, Schultz, Hainsey, Dumoulin and Trevor Dailey? All I’m saying is, that win kinda make me re-think the whole “a stacked d will win us the Cup!”, especially since it came against Nashville

You need a good team, whatever makes it good. That you "need stacked D", "elite goaltending", "1-2 center punch", whatever else are just fallacies proven wrong many times. There is no set template for what team wins the cup, too many people just get fixated on their own idea that there is. I mean Vegas got to the Finals and nobody still has any clue how exactly did that happen.

Having said that, if you are serious about contending you probably want to check at least a few of those boxes. At some point your strengths will compensate for your weaknesses but you have to accumulate those strengths somehow and I guess building a D core is easier than drafting Crosby and Malkin.

I’d say most cup winning teams have a very strong (or better) forward group, very strong (or better) group of dmen, and decently strong (or better) goaltending.

For exceptions, most common by far is winning with a weaker goalie. After that, winning with weaker defence happens every so often, and almost never do teams win with the cup weaker forwards.

But yeah, the best chance at a cup comes with very good everything, and the Wings have some great young (or young-ish) pieces at all positions. Edvinsson/Seider on D, Larkin/Raymond/Kasper at F, Cossa at G. Obviously plenty of maturation needed on most of those guys, and plenty of team building needed around them, but there’s some nice “cup contending core pieces” there, at all positions.

Its only been a few games so dont wanna go crazy but its really easy to see how at the draft people were saying his potential is through the roof if he puts it all together. Hes huge and an absolutely elite skater. Looks so smooth out there and has some edge to his game. Top line forwards wont like playing him and Seider come playoff time for 30 mins a game

Very few prospects come in and play this well right off the bat. He’s been really good. He’s obviously going to make some mistakes over pursuing, etc, but he’s legit.

He’s the type of player you have to draft. Nobody trades young, foundation dmen like these. They’re not flashy picks but now Detroit has two, with another chance of one with Wallinder. Johansson will be more of a really goof supporting player, but you never know until they step on NHL ice.

Better this fall than he was in his 9 games. By all rights there should be at least $6M worth of defensemen sitting come the regular season.
They always say, they want their young players to come in and take a spot. He’s done that. He’s been better than most of the veterans. Just like Danielson has been better than some of the veterans, and Elmer has been better than players like Fischer and Kostin. Think you’re gonna see a move made. Or at least Detroit is probably trying to move a dman.

It’s now that “nice problem to have” Yzerman talked about after signing players. The problem is, there’s not a lot of teams with cap room right now, so they might see guys sitting that wouldn’t sit normally, or they’ll move a dman for a forward another team is having issues trying to move.

It’ll be a story to watch. I don’t think they can logically send him down, but we’ll see.

Funny you mention it... I was just looking at Chiarot's buyout rate in 2024 and 2025 trying to figure which one would be worth it more.

100% NHL ready and then some. Will be interesting to see what Yzerman does to finalize the roster, but it would be a slap in the face to Ed if he goes to GR.

Honestly he still does some stuff where I'm thinking "What the hell are you doing?"

But I dunno. I think if they feel he's good enough to be on the 2nd pairing, they'll play him. If he's gonna be behind Maatta, they'd probably prefer him to get top pairing minutes in GR instead.

I think he's made giant steps to ease the concerns about his compete level, but that also requires consistency, and we'll never know if he can stay at a higher level until we know. Luckily, it appears based on what's been said in the pre-season that Seider and Larkin had no problem being on his ass about it.
