Let the record show I had Big Ed ranked 4th on my list, so far looks like a good spot for him.

The player we're seeing in the SHL this season is very much a logical progression of the guy we saw in Swedish juniors.
People talking about him as a steal?
He's almost exactly as advertised.
Does wonderful things with his size and speed. Sometimes shows a great pass.
But there are more fine-skill elements missing from his game.
He's the shock of the SHL season so far.

Yep and instead of people taking it as a rough style comparison that wings fans would know because Helm played for the team, they got their pitch forks out because they figured the wings were aiming to draft Helm type 3rd or 4th liners in the first round. Helm with hands isnt actually a bad comparison for Larkin anyways to be honest

Now some internet scouts say that Edvinsson cant pass the puck based on youtube highlights and a bunch of people run with it being a bad pick because of that, despite the fact that he was ranked top 3 all year. Some people will just never learn

It's a horrible comparison to make if you want to your fans enthusiastic for the pick, though.

Detroit Red Wings 2021 first-round pick Simon Edvinsson is already playing to rave reviews at the U-20 Four Nations Tournament. He posted two assists in Sweden’s 5-0 opening win against the Czech Republic.

A source, with ties to the Swedish team, told Detroit Hockey Now that Edvinssson “was a monster” in the game.

“He looks better than Rasmus Dahlin did at the same age,” the source said. “He has the same offensive game and is much stronger.”

“You have to go back to Victor Hedman to find a comparable Swedish D-man, aged 18,” the source said. “The Red Wings have a gem in Simon.”

Sounds like Edvinsson will be in GR or Detroit next year:

With the new agreement between the NHL and SHL he won't be able to play in Grand Rapids though. Assuming he has a contract over next year in Sweden

Edit: Or come to think about it maybe he will. Not sure if it's for already drafted players or just players drafted in the future

That's great.

That and 5 bucks will get you a cup of coffee at Starbucks.

I like Edvinsson alot but there are other guys also progressing and we won't have a handle on how this draft went down for at least a couple of years.

Dahlin was better at the same age, and the fact that they are even comparing Edvinsson to Dahlin is a bit strange to me. However, that doesn't say much. Dahlin is the best defensive prospect the world has seen in at least 20 years. As a swede I do think Edvinsson compares pretty favorably to other recent highly drafted swedish defencemen, like Boqvist, Sandin and Broberg, and I would also say he looks just as good of a prospect as Seider, at the very least.

It wasnt the writer making the comparison, it was the national team "source" so that gives it a little more weight to me. The kid has taken a big step forward and development is not linear. There are plenty of people starting to throw both Hedman and Dahlin as comparibles so it's getting harder to ignore.
I do agree that he is looking to be of a similar caliber to Seider, but that would put him in a tier above those players you listed....

I think a lot of people forget how young Dahlin was (including this source).

Not saying anything about the future, but up until and including Dahlins draft+1 season I think it's very unfair to compare any prospect to him. Because it will just put unnecessary pressure on the kid.

Take this source for example, when he says "Edvinsson is better than Dahlin was at the same age" I think he either doesn't know or has forgotten, that Dahlin played his WJC as an 16 and 17 year old, Edvinsson will play his first as an 18 year old. Infact when Dahlin was 18 he was playing in the NHL having one of the best U19 season by a defenseman ever.

Edvinsson looks great and given the lack of improvement from Dahlin in the past seasons, Edvinsson might end up the better player, who knows. But as prospects, anyone who says that "Edvinsson is better than Dahlin was at the same age" is really saying that 18 year old Edvinsson is better than 17 year old Dahlin.

I completely agree, it's why I wouldnt make the comparison myself. Dahlin was already playing for Buffalo at this point of his career. But it's still encouraging when Swedish sources are pumping the tires this much

One of the knocks on edvinsson at the draft was his offensive upside. To me the Dahlin comparison is just shorthand for “he’s having an breakout season offensively”

Edvinsson is very skilled and creative. There really is tons of offensive upside there, to me.

Helm with Hands is Mason Raymond.
Helm with Hands and an IQ is a superstar.
Raymond barely had better hands than Helm what are you talking about? When they say Helm with hands they aren't talking the bare minimum of an improvement. They mean you know actual hands of a goal scorer.

Exactly.

No he isn't. I had him ranked as the best defender in last year's draft after watching him play. Other posters I quoted above knew that too it seems. Edvinsson's talents were clearly evident to those who actually watched him closely. He has the highest potential of the defenders drafted last year. I'd say Luke is second(I had him first before watching Edvinsson).

This year has definitely vaulted him well past comparisons with guys like Boqvist, Sandin or Broberg. I think even what hes doing in Sweden was better than Seider in his draft+1. Ido think Seiders season is Sweden is one of the best weve seen from a drafted prospect in a long time though, its lofty expectations for Edvinsson to meet that.

I'm not sure theres a single dman prospect I would trade Edvinsson for though given how hes playing in Sweden right now, and I say that knowing guys like Sanderson and Power are having great seasons

I couldnt believe the hate he got, people who actually watched him play always seemed to like him. People who watched youtube videos seemed not to. Theres a reason NHL teams loved him more than bloggers and its showing now

I'd relax about the idea he's vaulted past Broberg. Broberg is at 0-9-9 in 12 AHL games. He's being brought along slowly.
Broberg was always going to be a bit of a project.
