I didn’t compare him to Smith, I compared him to Addison and Deangelo.

The name Ty Smith was brought up to highlight how fans can and will overvalue a player because they are young and new. It also helps he was also a Devils prospect.

Shayne Ghostisbehere is a better comparison. They both use skating and shiftiness to create shooting lanes to get the puck on net.

Shayne is one of the best Dmen at this in the NHL.

Dougie’s just not good enough defensively to work that type of role if you’re taking out say Kovacevic. Going 7D though especially with Lazar out now too makes a lot of sense and you could fit them all in that way. Casey’s even got the versatility to take some shifts up front if you need it. They’re not going to do it though

Kovacevic being so good really screwed things up for Casey and Nemec both lol (also Nemec himself struggling as if he was as good as he was last year he’d still be playing)
A lot of plugs aren't great defensively either but they can PK since it's more about structure and getting in lanes. Unless he's that bad in the defensive zone? I always thought he was passable in the defensive end.

He's never really been asked to PK with NJ until this season. He's not a moron. I'm sure with some coaching and practice he'd be fine. His issue is really transition defending at the other team's blueline where he gets caught flatfooted way too often. He's generally passable in the defensive zone if not great.

Another assist last night gives him 5 points in his first 3 games.

He's already tied for the league lead in assists among defenseman despite only playing 3 games.

I've watched Casey a lot in the NCAA, also saw all his games against the Rocket this year and in the NHL against the Canadiens.

And I am not surprised that Casey is having succes at the pro level.

He has skill, smarts, skates well, does not back down despite not having the biggest frame, defends well also using his smarts and body position.

I see him in the same light that I see Lane Hutson for the Canadiens, though he would be the lesser transition and offensive player while being superior defensively and especially better defender against speed coming off the boards.

Long story short, I think Casey will be a very good defender for a long time for NJ.

The Utica Comets are brutal. 8 games, 8 losses. 14 goals scored in total over those 8 games.

Since joining the team, in 4 games played Casey has 6 points on the 9 total goals Utica has scored.

Continues to move the puck well in all three zones. I tuned in to try to watch him and the cavalcade of third period goals against was kind of stunning. I wouldn't say he was blameless but chasing on the scoreboard leaves offensive defensemen often on the wrong end of odd-man rushes against.

First AHL goal can't be as big of a deal when you already scored your first NHL goal.
Hahah I was thinking the same thing.. obviously it’s still an accomplishment scoring at any level but it’s funny to see the collecting of the puck and everything when he’s already scored at the NHL level… but I get it!

Pretty crazy that he's leading all AHL rookies in p/gp despite playing on such a garbage offensive team.
Is it that out of the box to run 11-7 in NJ and have Casey take some shifts at wing and some on defense? Send down DeSimone and get Casey some looks. He's probably better than Tatar at offense right now.

No. It makes a ton of sense when you’re already down 2 forwards and your replacements are a goon and Dowling

Not an outrageous idea but seeing as he is a first-year pro it would seem more prudent to his development to having him play in all situations in Utica; rather than being used as an extra defenseman and sometimes forward in New Jersey.

It does speak to the lack of forward depth in the Devils' organization, however, that MacDermid is in the lineup every night rather than only occasionally (the way the Flyers use Nic Deslauriers).

Of course, unlike the Devils the Flyers have multiple players willing to stand up for teammates should the need arise.
