I am pretty skeptical of Yzerman's draft record in the first round (Drouin over Jones, Conolly, KoekKeok) but it looks Detriot got a good one in Seider!

Steve Yzerman in his recent interview after the trade deadline said that he's seen his ice time go up to 27 minutes a night recently
his stride is sooooooooooo effortless , skates silky smooth . that silky smooth stride allows him to move wayyyyy faster than opponants are used to guys moving which is how he is making all the monster hits , nobody expects him in those places that quickly . that silky stride allows him to cover large amounts of ice without expending large amounts of energy , well his high hockey iq helps too . ands a very coordinated athlete on skates able to put self in all kinds of body positions that enable him to make plays that nobody else can . he might win the hart n norris same season / seasons

Yeah I agree, his skating is really damn good.

Darian Hatcher?

I actually quite like the Hatcher comparison. Seider is certainly a better skater, maybe a touch better offensively (hopefully), but has a little less of a mean streak.
If he ends up having a Darian Hatcher-like career, this Wings fan would be extremely pleased.

I remember being so psyched when Hatcher came to Detroit for the 2003-2004 season, what a let down that ended up being lol.

Darian Hatcher?

I've said it on the Wings board that he's more similar to Mattias Ohlund. Rock solid defensively but still able to contribute on offense, physical, good skating, and an excellent passer. The only thing he doesn't have is Ohlund's slapshot which is something he could work on.

Darian Hatcher?

Seider is fairly mean and physical but hes not Derian Hatcher mean. Hatcher is one of the meanest to ever play. Seider is ten times the skater Hatcher was as well. I see Seider as more of a two way dman than Hatcher who was mostly a defensive guy. Not that Seider will light it up like crazy but he has a chance to QB a powerplay which wasnt Hatchers game.

Like someone else said, the Ohlund comparison isnt bad at all

Darian Hatcher?
More like Kevin than Derian.

He's going to be a mix between Bouwmeester and Ristolainen but will surprise people with his offense. He'll be a 55 point scorer in his prime. This kid is a stud--I've been one of the first people signing his praises before the season.

Very impressed wherever I watch him, I think he’ll be best dman in the draft. Great skater, high hockey IQ, very calm, pretty physical, just seems like a 2-way stud. Already a strong AHL dman at 18! I like both the Ohlund and Parayko comps.

Uh...he's nothing like Bouwmeester who got things done with elite skating ability and who started out his NHL career being less than stellar in his own zone but later on was able to settle in his game and read plays better in his end. And Ristolainen from what I've seen and read is an offense-first defensive liability, which is the exact opposite of Seider. Furthermore, Hatcher was an offensive defenseman who had good straight ahead speed but terrible agility and backward mobility. I remember watching him get caught up ice on the rush a lot on those Caps teams because he was being played like a 4th forward. The only things Seider has in common with the players you mention is that they're 6'4" defensemen.

Mix.

He has Bouwmeester's fluid skating and IQ and Ristolainen's height (and thickness), physical element an some offensive chops.

I think if he works on his skating/edge work and his shot a bit he could become a more mobile version of Shea Weber.

Shea Weber is a future HOF, multiple time Norris finalist and is one of the best defencemen of the past decade. Cmon. A more mobile Shea Weber would be one of, if not the greatest defenceman of all time.

You think a more mobile Shea Weber is better than Orr? Current Shea Weber has never won a single norris...and only being nominated 3 times. A more mobile Shea probably wins a few norris' but like, he would have to become waaay more mobile to enter the discussion of top 10 dmen ever.

Not sure how a little quicker version of Shea Weber is the greatest D of all time...we're you giving him superhuman speed or something?

Lidstrom was the best D of all time. Orr played when guys still worked summer jobs. Competition level, training was not as high and demanding as modern day. I love the old timers but many of them even freely admit hockey is much faster, more skilled than when they played.

That's why you compare players to their peers. If you brought Orr into the early 2000s when Lidstrom was dominating, and gave Orr the physical training Lidstrom had Orr likely wipes the floor with Lidstrom.

Mario Lemeiux started in the 80s (a couple years after Orr retired). He had major back issues, and retired early due to cancer. He returned in the early 2000s at age 35 and proceeded to put up 35 goals in 43 games during the deadpuck era. He also managed a 91 point in 67 game season at age 37. So uber disgusting talent like gretzky, lemeiux, and orr had kinda take precedent over era.

This is a dumb way to get this thread derailed. Lidstrom was not better than Orr lol.

I dont think the Weber comparison is good at all for Seider either. Weber is a mean defense first guy and thats about the only comparison. Webers not close to the skater Seider is, Webers offense relies on his cannon of a slapshot, Seider barely takes slap shots. Theyre both good defensively and play with a mean streak thats about it
