If you are from Michigan why would you hate the Redwings? Different parts of Michigan might have different political leanings but they are usually united in their love for the Redwings and that applies also to MI transplants to other states that fill other cities stadiums thru the years.

I am not a Michigan native. I moved to the state in the middle of the Wings golden era and as with many people who move to a new area I took a dislike to the team, especially when the team dominates. At this stage it’s probably more of a friendly dislike, most of my friends are Wings fans.

I respect Yzerman as a builder and think they drafted two foundation building players in 19 and 20.

The Redwings actually garner fans from other states in the US and Canada and is probably the most popular US NHL franchise in Canada because of it's proximity as a border state providing easy access for Ontario fans to watch and follow their games, as well as how likeable and marketable their best stars(Howe, Yzerman, Lidstrom and now Larkin) were and because of the respectful way they treat the game, their fans, their players(especially under Mike Illitch) and other teams.

Their soft spoken GM Yzerman is one of the most respected GMs in the NHL and has been credited for building Tampa Bay to the perennial Stanley Cup contender it eventually became. We as fans are lucky to have him back and watching the Redwings return to SC contender status again under his management.

That intentional miss for the rebound assist was incredible by a player his age in his first season in the NHL, 50 games in. He actually aimed to get the puck to I think it was Raymond but nonetheless, just a big wow from me. That is not flashy in any sene, often times people do not even realize it but it gets the job done when the straightforward play would not. Just pure class as far as I am concerned. Impressive.

Trying hard not to over react and think about the second coming of #5. It's obviously early. But he is exactly the anchor this or any team needs. Hopefully he keeps getting better. I'm holding my breath for a brighter future.

He's now only 2 points behind raymond/zegras for rookie lead in points. Essentially erasing any reason they could get votes over him for the Calder. As they've slowed offensively, he's sped up.

To be fair, Zegras hasn't exactly slowed down. Quite on the contrary, in fact.

Zegras is amazing and may end up the better player long-term but if we're talking about who is having the better season and who has a greater impact on their team for just this year, it's Seider for me and it's not particularly close. He's running away with the Calder right now.

Calder lock.

I completely agree. His impact on the ice goes far beyond offensive production as well. He is clearly already a leader on the Wings in so many respects, playing in every situation in all three zones. No disrespect meant to the likes of Makar, Fox, Hughes, or Heiskanen, but I cannot think of any rookie dman in the modern era to enter the league and immediately have this much of an impact on their team. To put it another way, if Makar or Fox missed games in their rookie seasons, the Avs/Rangers wouldn't have suffered as much as if the Wings had to play without Seider right now. This is partially due to the depth the Avs and Rangers have on their blueline, but also because Seider has already become the dman the Wings rely on most heavily in practically every conceivable situation, and for the most part he is flourishing. Obviously he makes the odd mistake (which dman in the league doesn't), but his performance beclouds his age.

They are now both tied in points at 39.

A forward normally develops faster than a defenceman with the latter's peak(overall effectiveness on both ends of the ice) normally happening later in their career.

Zegras has a bright future but he is nowhere near the leaders in his position in the NHL yet and can be inconsistent from game to game.

The fact that the 20 y/o Seider is already dominating this early in his career and not just among rookies but also among all NHL defenceman(currently #12 overall on points) on both offence and defence bodes well for his future trajectory as a potential Norris trophy candidata.

Seider is already the #1 defenceman for his team, plays the most minutes and is used on both special teams. He has more impact on his team than any other rookie in the NHL so I definitely agree that he is the clear favorite for the Calder despite his teammate Raymond leading the NHL rookie points total at 42.

Bunting quietly slides into the #2 spot for rookie scoring. Don’t sleep on him.

He'll need to outscore Raymond, Zegras, Lundell by a healthy margin in order to have any chance. I still hold that none of those players are close to Seider at this point.

None of what you said is untrue and Seider looks to be a safe bet to be a Norris candidate in the near feature, kid looks unreal.

As for the Zegras part, he’s also much more physically underdeveloped compared to Seider. He’s never going to be big but he has a lot of physical growth left to do, he’s just a skinny kid out there right now. The consistency will come when he’s physically able to manage the grind of the season and will help him play his game even more. Might be a few seasons before we see that, he looks like a late bloomer.

For sure, I think Zegras will be a top 10C in his prime. He’s essentially Datsyuk but more of an asshole and with room to grow defensively.

The thing with Seider though is that despite how strong he alreayd is, he’s actually quite lanky for his height. He’s got some filling in to do for sure, and that’s a scary thought

Michael Bunting is such a wet blanket on the Calder discussion. He's a full year older than Dylan Larkin, who is now playing in his seventh full season. He's also playing on a line with two perennial Allstars.

Very good pick up for Toronto, combative player and a nice goal-scorer. He filled the hole left by Hyman very well. But not someone who really belongs in a discussion with Seider, Zegras, Lundell, Raymond, etc. imo, regardless of his rookie status.

I think it’s an interesting discussion.

Makar was 4th in points per game his rookie year and paced for 72 points per 82 game schedule. Moritz is 18th in points per game among defenceman, but is playing a larger role. I think about 1:45 more TOI than Makar was as a rookie.

I believe Makar was 8th, or 9th in Norris voting as a rookie. I could see Seider right around that range if he keeps playing so well for the remainder of the year.

Datsyuk won the Selke trophy 3 times as the best defensive forward in the NHL. He spends as much time trying to improve his defence with his daily keep away sessions with Zetterberg(while already being defensively responsible right from the start of his NHL career) and his other teammates as he does on offence. He has had only one negative +/- season in his entire career and that was in his third year at -2 and has usually a higher +/- than his teammates.

In contrast Zegras already has a -13 much lower than his teammates with the team average of -4 at the moment. I don't see Zegras ever being that efficient on defence so he will never reach the heights of overall effectiveness that Dastyuk has accomplished in his career.
