Watching Fox leave the Flames hurt. We knew how damn good he was, but what could we do? Kid deserves his perks, so you can't be mad about it. He won't bust like Erixon did, I assure you that. Won't be cheering for him anytime soon though either.

If he doesn't suck, I don't see why he wouldn't, not like the Rangers have a boat load of good RHD ahead of him. After Trouba and DeAngelo, theres nothing

Why?

There’s a conditional pick attached to the games he plays this season. If the team isn’t going to make the playoffs, why should we hand over a second round pick for free?

Another gem.

a) Does Quinn know this team won't make the playoffs?
b) Because that's not how prospect development works.

The rangers aren’t going to bury him in the AHL over a draft pick if he’s NHL ready and developing.

Why would it be burying him in the AHL? He’s never played a pro hockey game. He’s proven nothing, and he can still play plenty of NHL games this season. It makes no sense to have him reach the conditional pick number. The team is going nowhere this year. A rebuilding team should not give picks for free. There are plenty of other young defensemen who can fill in. In fact, it makes a lot more sense to give his spot to Lindgren early on to see what he can do as an NHL’er on a consistent basis, and then around January you start making accommodations for Fox’s spot.

What role is Fox going to even play? He needs to be sheltered with PP time. He’s the third defensemen on the right side for PP time. Having DeAngelo and Fox on the same right side isn’t going to be easy for the coach. It’s best to limit that this season. DeAngelo can be traded after this season and then there’s less of an issue.

I agree 100% with this as it will be better asset management and most likely the better development path for Fox as well.

If he needs the AHL time he’ll get it. If he doesn’t then he’ll play. My point is that the Rangers will make their decisions based on the needs of Fox’s development, not on whether or not they give up a second versus a third round pick.
Perhaps if it comes down to a situation where he’s a regular at the end of the season and would go over the game mark by a game or two they’d sit him for a few, but I don’t believe they’d keep him in Hartford solely to avoid the pick situation.

Cost of living in NYC might be the worst in the league and it's not like you get offsetting by tons of endorsements

Rent and housing may be expensive in NYC, but almost everything else can be had for cheap/affordable if one makes any effort. Food? Definitely. Groceries? Trader Joe's, ethnic supermarkets, bodegas, etc. Transportation? As crappy as MTA is/can be, it costs less than $140 to own an unlimited monthly pass that covers regular trains and buses in all 5 boroughs. Cultural/Arts/Entertainment? Just take a train and wait for showtime! (jk) there's tonsss of options available. Heck, get an amc a-list membership for less than $25 a month and watch movies all week.

For actual living, players could live in LIC, Astoria, parts of Brooklyn, etc. that are easily accessible and one or a few stops away from MSG. It's not living in Manhattan, but it's most likely cheaper, and just as fun and interesting.

To sum up, there are hella tons of options available to all income levels once you can cover your rent/housing situation.

Yeah, just hop on the N, change over at Queensboro plaza to get the 7 to Grand Central, wait for the Metro North train to Tarrytown, then Uber over to the practice facility.

Piece of cake!

New York is a hell of a place to be if money is no concern. Unless you want a family place and suburbia life style which most of the UFA prospects don't care to have at the time.
A lot of Rangers and former Rangers live/lived in NYC suburbs. Last I checked, most of the players lived near the training facility in Westchester. Some of the more established players have had digs in Greenwich, CT. As far as I know, it's less common for NYR players to actually live in the city limits.

Pragmatically, yes that makes sense.

If the kid clearly deseserves the time, I don't think this group of NYR management will play head games like that. Sather would have though.

And you might be right. None of us are the GM, so we don't know, but the same question can be posed for the goalie situation, and people will flip their tune on something very similar.

Shestyorkin has proven himself in pro hockey way more than any prospect we've ever had, and he's 23 years old. Yet, he'll probably start out in the AHL because of considerations with the rest of the team. Just like with Fox there are considerations around picks, with Shestyorkin there are considerations around personnel. Gorton has not made alterations for Shestyorkin, why should he do it for a far less proven player? He shouldn't. The GM should make the best decisions for the team. If Gorton decides it makes more sense to not have him reach the conditional pick number and Fox doesn't like it, he shouldn't have demanded a trade to the Rangers. A few less games in the NHL as a rookie makes almost no difference. Fox might bring that number into play anyway due to # of scratches instead of playing in the AHL.

Oh boy here we go with the f***ing "you can only have one offensive defenseman" shtick again.

I didn't say that, but you know its harder when they both play the same side, and neither are all that good yet defensively.

There are plenty of good offensive defensemen who also play big defensive roles, but neither DeAngelo nor Fox are capable of that yet. We actually saw a similar situation last year with Shattenkirk and DeAngelo, and it didn't work out great. It doesn't get easier when we bring in another right sided defensemen whose going to take up a lot of PP time.

Here's a crazy idea: get rid of Staal instead of DeAngelo and get LHD who can defend. Problem solved.

It's actually easier when they're on the same side because it gives you significantly more flexibility if you have to change the pairs up.

Is there a better way to gauge them against each other, than actually playing each other? Because if there is, I'm not aware.
Is this the new version of hockey where dmen play forward all game which causes defenders to defend only against other dmen?

Also sample size

Not even saying fox is better I am just saying your way of presenting the argumentis severely lacking

You can get rid of Staal, and it doesn't change the situation that much. How do you accommodate three right-shot defensemen to play on the PP when you already have two right-shot forwards that are going to play on the PP? Are we going to run a PP with 3 or 4 right shots? Also, while you can always use players on their off-side for the penalty kill, it's easier to have players on their natural side. I also think its going to have a balance of roles within all sub-sections of a team. You don't want too many players of a certain style at each position, too many players who shoot R-L at a position, too many players at a position who play the same roles. It's not great to have two players who fill essentially the same role in a team on the right-side of defense, and that role is more of a specialist role for now than an all-purpose role.

We aren't going to be able to keep everyone. It's made harder when we sign players like Panarin or Trouba to big contracts. We have a first round pick RHD who should be ready in a season or two, and we have plenty of other defensemen prospects that will be ready to play next year, as well. DeAngelo is already complaining about his contract, and I don't suspect he's going to make it easier after this season. That seems like a very easy decision to make. Trade him after the season, and let someone else pay him. Fox moves up into the role he'll have played last season and this season, and someone else, like Lundkvist, can move into the third pair role on the right side.

That actually is a pretty terrible way to gauge anything. Overall performance matters, not just 1 game where they play vs each other. The matchup can be good head to head but that doesn't necessarily mean the other player's more effective overall.
