They have no drainage system

Does any stadium in Florida have drainage? Baseball specific. Marlins park has a retractable roof so not sure they set up drainage but even if they did they aren't using that park. I highly doubt any of the grapefruit or minor league stadiums do, just can't see the cost of that being worth it for those stadiums.

The rain is and isn't an issue i believe. Sure it rains almost every day in the summer months but it doesn't rain all day. So if you can be flexible with game start times you can get the games in. Not until late Hurricane season do you get total rainout days. The humidity will be the issue for the teams during the summer but they get a taste of that in spring training.

The silence is deafening. "tEh Tr0p Iz FiNe As iT iS!!11!!!1 No N000 StAdIuM" crowd has been real quiet since the roof got ripped off

Gentle reminder that all those folks can stick it

ironically, they should draw more fans now that the stadium is far more accessible than the trop

yankees get an extra handful of home games since the dimensions are exactly the same

They'll sell tickets for the novelty of the situation ar first, the capacity is only 11,000. Only a joke franchise like the Rays could do this to being with. Wait until people find out about the rush hour traffic near Tampa from the surrounding areas.

The inability to drive across a bridge to St Pete was always a lame ass excuse for attendance.

Also with the Florida heat/humidity and rain, we'll see how it goes.

I mean, there weren't many viable options. They were never going to play a season in Montreal or Portland or wherever due to the logistical hurdles. Steinbrenner Field has MLB amenities which is why they chose it, vs a college ballpark.

I think Olympic Stadium is actually going thru a renovation and is not even available this season anyway, logistical issues or otherwise it just couldn't happen

Probably the most realistic nd logical move they could have made.

Even if i were a billionaire owner i'd have a hard time trying to justify the 50+ million price tag to pay for a roof at the Trop when i'm only going to be there a couple more seasons.

Especially when the Rays don’t own the Trop, nor could it be ready by Opening Day, by all accounts.

Great, now we have two teams playing home games in minor league parks. Great job, MLB. Although, the Rays part isn’t their fault. Seriously, though. This is a bad look for baseball.

not really, nobody cares about either the A's or the Rays, and what was MLB really supposed to do, build a few extra MLB capable stadiums just for the hell of it in case something happens?

What else were they going to do with the Rays? Major league stadiums aren't readily available for teams to move in to.

Athletics is a temporary measure.

Just build it in Tampa. Pinellas County and St. Pete at large have waved that stupid lease around for 18 years demanding that the Rays play every last game in Tropicana Field and now they aren't even gonna fix the damn thing at all despite having the obligation. Why?Because the Rays didn't choose some inferior ballpark in Pinellas County over a baseball palace at Steinbrenner?

I am so sick of this. Put the plans for Ybor or the Fairgrounds back on and be done with it. St. Pete had their chance and used an actual crisis to f*** around and delay the ballpark again

As far as I can figure, that lease is completely dead until they fix Tropicana Field and it doesn't appear MLB cares even slightly if they played in Steinbrenner while a new ballpark was built given the A's precedent. Start figuring out the deal with Tampa now and you'll have shovels in the ground in 2 years.

Good luck St. Pete. You can keep that dump and figure out how to tear it down if you aren't gonna pay to fix it
