What the hell are you talking about lol? Even if Staios fails, it's going to be hard to be as BAD as Dorion was.

I have seen at least 3-4 comments like this this summer. Just because I can call a spade a spade and I am not being a pure homer who thinks his team is the best without reason, then I get the "go cheer for team X"

I am sorry if I have witnessed this rebuild lose a LOT of his shine over the last 4 seasons

This is so childish and stupid lol and I have seen you made a ton of comments trashing this organization over the years, which makes it even more ridiculous lmao

you’re problem is you can’t see the sea change that’s happened with his team, the depth of the talent we have in management, the balance in the roster now and improvements to the coaching staff - Ottawa has literally improved in every face yet of the organization and you’re still mad they fired Dorion

I was the king of the trash Melnyk fan club, I was years ahead of everyone else and I was right.

How the hell am I mad that they fired Dorion? I called him the worst GM in NHL history, worse than Milbury

lol you must be mixing me up with someone else. We're getting old, memory is getting bad

I'll go from bad to good...

I disliked that he didn't fire DJ Smith before the season began. He also waited way too long in-season, and wasted the entire year IMO. It put more pressure on this upcoming year than it should, as a resut of a poor season. With enough bad luck, it could become the domino that started the 'Brady wants out' chain of events.

I dislike the Green hire, and think they should have went with a more established coach that has less of a 'bargain-bin' vibe. Maybe he'll be great but at this point so far - I don't like it, but I don't hate it either.

I see Amadio's contract as a kind of swap for Joseph (and a 3rd rounder). I have a slight negative view of it as I don't think Amadio is worth that much, and we should have prioritized a better value contract.

Moving on from Brannstrom was a move that needed to happen, given his QO.

I'm somewhat neutral towards the Perron signing. On one hand, he makes too much to play 3rd line (or whoever he bumps down will). On the other, I believe Norris is will get injured again, and that makes a guy like Perron very useful.

I like the Gregor signing, given the contract. Not a major move but a solid one.

I'm good with Jensen, but I think there were bette options in Roy/Pesce/Tanev/Marino. This is tough to guage as I don't really know how hard Staios pushed for any of them. Maybe Jensen was a last resort after the other names didn't want to come to Ottawa, or maybe Staios made bad offers. Either way, the end result is just okay as I think Jensen is a good fit, but we lost the 'value' aspect of the deal losing Chychrun.

The Pinto deal is certainly a good one. I'd have preferred something longer-term, but the position it puts us in, is a solid one.

At the draft, he took the guy I legit wanted in Yakemchuk. I think it was an unpopular pick, but I'm personally super happy with it.

The Ullmark trade was absolutely brilliant.

Voted:
3 stars good but could have done better

On evaluating Staios, I think you just have to look at productivity, whether you like the moves or not is almost irrelevant. Steve Staios has addressed every issue he needed to and it is still early July. I get the sense there will be some other change/addition, but more a depth move I figure. As opposed to last year when they couldn't have signed Pinto had they wanted to because they did prioritize things properly. This year, I'm impressed with the Ulmark move and willing to give the rest a shot.

I think people are overrating the Perron move cause Giroux worked out well. Giroux took a step back last year and Perron did aswell.

We need to be careful with these guys ages. I was hoping they brought in 29-32 year old vets. Father time is not on these guys sides. We also lost speed with Joseph something we need more of

Chychrun move was bad. Ullmark was good

I forgot judging Staios on not firing DJ right away.

The logic of "waiting and seeing" lost us the season right away. A new coach wouldn't have guaranteed the playoffs, but it would've shown an understanding that coaching with our team was ass. There's a reason Talbot and Gus could go elsewhere and succeed, Korpisalo wasn't the only one that shat the bed. DJ should've been fired at the same time as Dorion to go for a clean slate. Green and a whole bunch of stop gap coaches would've been available if we fired DJ even in November.

Have to give the GM some high marks for the wheeling and dealing done in the off-season…. Looks like a few holes were plugged and the opening night roster was a big improvement over last years…. Sure, some more tinkering needs to be done, but right now the focus has to be on the Head Coach and how the first 20 to 25 games go.

I’m going to wait until American Thanksgiving (or the end of November) before I start passing judgement.

A lot of our better forwards have been rather quiet and lackluster so far (just 2 games). We’ve only scored four goals in two games, and one of the goals was an empty net goal. Maybe they’re so focused on playing defense that offensive production is slipping? Anyhow, its something to keep an eye on.

And that is almost the 25 game mark….. and I only see about 15 to 16 (more) points to be had by the end of November…. So anything more than that would be exceeding my conservative expectations…

He’s going to regret not making a move for a backup goalie if Ullmark is out any considerable length of time. Granted, Forsberg might have been a selling point for Ullmark given their friendship.

When you look at the off season roster moves you look at all of them individually and think “that’s worked out pretty well.”

Top to bottom all the moves from Ullmark to Gaudette, Jensen, Gregor, Amadio, Travis Green, management hires, drafting Carter Karlssonchuk.

Straight A’s. Good Student.

Always looked good to me. Had the best trade of the summer for any team this year, and rounded out the roster pretty well with limited resources.

- We needed to improve goaltending & he went out & got Ullmark.
- We needed to improve the defence & he went out & got Jensen & promoted Kleven & JBD.
- We needed better veterans in the room & he went out & got Cousins, Perron & Amadio, three former Cup winners & they improved the bottom six.
- He signed former Green player Gaudette who has been a pleasant surprise so far this season scoring.
- IMO he drafted exactly the kind of top four RD this org needs in Yakemchuk for their future success.

Four & a half stars out of five stars IMO. :thumbu::thumbu:

He not only traded for Ullmark, he signed him to a new contract.
JBD was already on the roster, not promoted.
You forgot to mention Gregor who has shown some value too.
He also hired Green as HC who seems to be improving team performance at this time.

But I am not going higher than my current rating at this time; more games are required before making a judgement.

Let's play a game of "Which GM did this?"

1. Traded a 1RP for a player on an expiring contract before they even discussed a contract extension.
2. Signed a scoring winger to a big enough contract that it put us in a cap bind to sign Pinto.
3. That scoring winger signing means we had to pay to unload Joseph, instead of recouping an asset.
4. Made a pretty significant reach at the draft with our 1RP, taking a guy at 7 who was consensus ranked in the mid-teens.
5. Offloaded a 26yo top 4 D, who has another 8 years of NHL-quality play in him, for a guy who will be 34 when the season starts and has 2, maaaaaaybe 3, more years of NHL-quality play in him.
6. Talked about adding veterans and experience to the lineup in the lead up to the offseason and the only guy he brought in who fits that description is Perron, who more or less is exactly the same thing Tarasenko brought the year before.

Here's the thought exercise: assign the rating if the GM's name is Staios and then do it again if the GM's name was Dorion. Let's see how closely they align.
How well do you think this aged?

Signing and extending Ullmark is massive. The Forsberg-Ullmark tandem seems to be one of the top in the league.

The offensive depth of the Senators is huge when compared to previous years.

To give the previous management some props they did draft a lot of those offensive players that make the Sens such a joy to watch.

The Stutzle-Sanderson picks might go down as two of the greatest ever made by the Senators. They certainly look like it. Greig might turn out to be a key cog in future playoff runs.

If Norris remains healthy I think that signing will prove to be a useful one. Batherson is so good with a wicked shot, also picked by previous management. Tkachuk might have been the easy pick, but they made it.

Signing Gaudette is another plus for Staios.

May he a bit too early to judge him, but for this polI I gave him 4 stars, he has really just had this off season to make his imprints on this team. Staios seemed have hired a competent coaching staff (kept his guys JM and Alfie while Green brought his own guys) and picking Yakemchuk looks like a homerun. Other than being able to address the bottom pair by getting a veteran D to pair with Kleven, he has completed all the off season checkboxes of team needs, none bigger than landing a legit number 1 NHL goaltender.

His moves are paying early dividends as we see the team maturing quickly in front of our very own eyes. I believe DJ Smith, a good guy, let the likes of Stutzle and Tkachuk to flourish as individual players but was horrible in ensuring these guys played as a team like a pro. He had no system and the stench from that old regime will rear it’s ugly self here and there, but I think the team is trending upwards towards the right direction.

Once Pinto, Zub and Perron are back and playing as a unit, this team is a threat against any opponent. I think there is belief in this locker room that they can beat the best of them.

Good job by Staios assembling the personnel needed towards making this team realistically compete for a post season birth.

I am not sure spending 8 million on that goalie was a good move, I hope it works out, Everything else he has done so far seems ok
