Is Bear not working out?

His skating has become a problem. It's hard to say if it relates to conditioning issues resulting from his bout with Covid and if that is rectifiable, but he's not a fit in the context of the makeup of the blueline right now. Cole can't bail Bear out the way Slavin can. DeAngelo has earned the minutes in the Top 4.

Carolina doesn't have a lot of cap space available (~$2.6 mil with a 21 man roster) and that won't change, barring further injury, as the team is in LTIR. Bear's a logical piece to go as a cap balancer.

People see his size and don't get the idea of who he is as a player. He's decent in the offensive zone and has ok numbers despite no pp time.
2nd and b prospect or a late first. In the flat cap he'll be lucky to get the same money which I believe is the issue with him re signing in Philadelphia

I still want to see him on a good team.

Me too, but I also feel like good teams stay away from guys like him. He can eat minutes, he can do things on offense, but he’s not great at just limiting mistakes in a 2nd or 3rd pairing role.

I was a Risto truther, but at this point I don’t think he’ll change. You know the “can’t walk and chew gum at the same time” shtick? That’s Risto with outlet passes, he can’t skate and make a pass to save his life. I feel like the habits came from being thrown to the wolves on awful Sabres squads and just having to chip it off the boards all the time, and he’s just never grown from that. You can see him thinking out there, it never comes naturally.

Anyways, will be curious to see if he moves. Maybe Edmonton or someone seriously in need of help.

People hate on him because of his time in Buffalo, but they were bad before he was drafted, I have a hard time believing they were bad because HE sucked

Dont think anyone has ever claimed that, he just didn’t really help either. Eating all the tough minutes for those teams is what makes me sympathetic to him though, I think he got into some bad habits having to just hold his head above water instead of getting to work on developing.

Oh I've had conversations here I was specifically told HE was the problem.

Not the bad trades, bad drafting, bad free agent signings, bad coaches.

Nope there have been those that have told me it was him, HE sucked

Eh, meet ya halfway- I don’t remember Sabres fans saying he was the whole problem or anything, just that he stunk, and to me it was like- dude, they don’t have anyone better. If they did Risto wouldn’t be playing 25 minutes a night. So while I don’t recall many people putting all the issues on him specifically (we acknowledged the team was bad), I do recall the organization’s failings falling on his shoulders, and fans criticizing him for not magically turning into Pronger. Also why I had sympathy for him, but I was hoping he’d turn into a useful 2nd pairing guy. Hasn’t seemed to happen.

Edit- actually you have a point, I recall some wanting him gone before they had any sort of replacement. Like, how was that gonna help? Dude was a hell of a placeholder, played physically every game- could see him netting a 2nd at least from a contender.

Its unlikely the flyers trade him within the division but can see pitt having some interest as well as Toronto and Edmonton.

Makes sense. I found that in Edmonton as well. He looked amazing next to Nurse, but next to Kris Russell, oof.

He sucks and it continues to baffle me that he’s held in such high regard in terms of his value.

for every “BiG hiT” he makes 3 inexcusable mistakes.

And often the big hit is the inexcusable mistake, taking himself out of position or leaving his partner hung out to dry.

RR is the reason RR always plays on bad teams.

This is the disconnect between evaluating a player by their EA Sports NHL attributes and their actual impact. Ristolainen is big, mobile enough, has a hard shot, big hitter. But he doesn't actually understand how to play hockey.

So he's the reason Buffalo has been dog shit for over a decade and is about to set the record for conservative playoff misses?

Yeah I call bullshit.

HE is the reason Philadelphia is a tire fire?

again I call bullshit.

I've said it before, while not my 1st choice, that would be Klingberg, I do think he'd fit nicely beside Muzzin once Muzzin is healthy.

Because Toronto is actually good and Risto has never even been on a below average team, let alone a good one.

Someone like Ken Holland will give him $5m a year. Big, RHD, looks better on paper than he is. Perfect for an old-school GM to spend far too much money on.

What on earth is this guy's next contract going to look like? Does he sign with the Flyers again?
Guys been on nothing but train wrecks for teams. Put him on a team that is a winner and I think you see his talent show

Ristolainen is the reason why Buffalo Sabres has been continuing being crap at this season without Ristolainen.

And Ristolainen was the reason why Philadelphia Flyers was able to be crap also at last season without Ristolainen.

As long as it’s not the TML. While I would really love to see Dubas add at top 4RHD this is not the player. If we could somehow afford Klingberg I’d be all over that acquisition.
Klingberg shouldnt be hard for Toronto to afford, Dallas would probably have extended interest in Robertson so if Toronto is calling they may go out of their way to make a deal

We have 3 good RHD. Ceci is better than Risto, and probably Barrie is better too. Sure, adding Risto might be good, but I don't see why Holland would waste his time with that while we have bigger holes at LHD and especially in net.

We know Dubas has shown interest in him in the past I wonder if he tries again
only if we can get Muzzin to waive ...he'd be a re-sign pickup, not a rental, as a rental he doesnt bring much.
unless its in a deal 50% retained for Holl, but, why would Philly do that.
