He was great on defense 2 years ago, and good on defense last year. He's had some ups and downs this year. You're take isn't getting a lot better, and suffers badly from recency bias.
He was better than Makar in these metrics in the 22-23 season, but Buffalo is a very bad organization with a questionable GM who can't do everything right, even f***ing when Ruff becomes a coach. You still have to screw up with defense, then screw up with goalies and screw up with the top 6.

Higher expectations bias too.
Well, that's just a problem for the fans. You can't throw 18-year-old Dahlin into the NHL in an organization like Buffalo with all that mess and expect him to play like Makar forever. Although they are completely different players. Makar plays in a good organization with a constant partner, with a constant good PP, with the same coach. If you want players like Dahlin and Power to play well and develop correctly, do everything you can to achieve this, what did Adams do? NOTHING.

I posted this on the main board. I know some posters referenced this earlier today.

Ruff said this today on WGR550 when asked about Dahlin's ill timed penalties:

"It's something that he's going to have to get over. It's repeated now, it's something in his DNA. Part of the DNA is his emotion is running really high. Part of that DNA was wiring that slap shot on the power play that says we're going to make sure we get into this game. At the same time that type of DNA is hurting him. It's something that mentally he has to get past. We have to help him get past that. As the captain of the team you're the leader. The guy who sets the tone. So it's something in Dahls case that he knows he has to be better. He knows he can't take that situation.

Every player has a trigger. Can you control that trigger whether it's an emotional trigger, physical, at a key moment? We have to be able to conquer those hard moments. That is a moment that he has to let go. He's going to have to learn to let go. He hasn't been able to do it yet....."

Also said this after a follow-up question:

"Learn to control. Learn to move on."

I think he will cope with it, although this franchise has been tearing your heart out for many years. I remember Eichel breaking sticks, fighting with Eriksson Ek, I think, and it was because of constant losing and anger.

In the game with Montreal, they tried to push him into the boards with his head, then Gallagher drove into his leg, sometimes emotions overflow and I understand that. Dahlin, I think, has not been call for 5-6 games in a row, but sometimes the cup patience fills up, and he needs to learn to control this cup, and he will learn.

Some guys do things on the edge. If they get away with it, fine, but he's often getting penalized far too often. And if he can channel his anger into say, effort on retrievals or stops and starts or any of those things that make it seem like he's occasionally lackadaisical when effort is required.

Reminds me when Fairburn said in the summer that it might be better to hold off giving Dahlin the C because of his emotion.

Emotions are not bad, on the contrary, you just need to direct them in the right direction. Also, the captain is chosen based on many factors, behavior off the ice, in the locker room, at training, this is not the choice of one person, this is the choice of the team.

Ruff said in Dahlin's case it is a bad thing. He needs to learn to overcome it.

Right now he is not a good captain. As Ruff said: "As the captain of the team you're the leader. The guy who sets the tone."

I mean emotions in general this not bad in the game, they are not robots, you just need to keep the evil part of yourself within limits and not be provoked. Look at the captains of other teams, do they play without emotions? No, of course not, they also get call penalty sometimes, they also get angry sometimes, for some it happens less or someone has already learned to control themselves.
