Rantanen vs Necas points race to end of season.

After sleeping on it, I think Rantanen will be fine. Just based on eye test, he has both had opportunities and created them for others and in fact looked better than in his games with Colorado from the start of the year. His career average shooting% is 16.3 and currently he is at 4.8 with Carolina, and his career average oiSH% is 12.5 (different teams I know) but currently at 4.5. With just normal luck he'd have 3+3 instead of 1+1 and there would be no panic.
A huge percentage of his goals were scored on 1 timers in Colorado. If he's not getting those 1 times in Carolina, then his s% will drop substantially.

haven't watched much avs over past 2 decades BUT years ago during DRW dark days, i followed leafs pretty closely (babcock and half of keefe era).

Marner always stood out as a great talent, who didnt play up to his potential in the playoffs but some1 who could drive his own line from the wing.

With all that said it seemed like their was a consensus rantanen > marner.

while i half expect for marner to choke in the playoffs again (maybe not this year BC contract year), would be hard to imagine him struggling as mightily as rantanen is now if he was traded.

Way to somehow bring Leafs and Marner into a thread about Rants and Necas, so good job I guess?

Anyways, I fully expect Rants to pick it up after 4 nations and wouldn't surprise me to see him do well in playoffs for the Canes

honestly im just curious about what rantanen will sign for and his situation.

Hypothetically, if i was a GM would b more comfortable targeting marner as a UFA just BC plain fact i have watched him play over 100x the hockey i have seen rantanen play.

curious ppls opinions into trade deadline/off-season etc who recent play will affect rantanen's UFA value/ chance of signing with canes (and for how much) etc

Cold streak or not I take Rantanen over Marner ten times out of ten.

We (fans) have been slow to adjust to gradual cap inflation. This upcoming period of rapid spikes will result in a lot of consternation and ridicule.

Here’s what $13 mil is equivalent to each year relative to the flat cap we got used to (using $82.5 mil):

25-26: $11.23 mil
26-27: $10.31 mil
27-28: $9.49 mil

None of us know what Rantanen is thinking regarding his next deal. Imho, I still believe the trade had him all shook up like Elvis, and the early go in Carolina has been rather underwhelming. A couple of points in a handful of games and a (hopefully) mild injury. The team hasn't been world-beaters either, except for the one game he didn't play.

I think the kid will take a deep breath and ride out the rest of the season and evaluate his options in the summer. That said, I don't know if the Canes will be happy with that. They paid a hefty price for Mikko and they can't afford to let him walk for nothing. Unless Rantanen returns from the 4 Nations and stars putting up gaudy numbers that result in big wins for the Canes, I believe they will look to flip him at the deadline if an extension isn't complete. I doubt they roll the dice... hope for a miracle run... then risk losing him (plus Necas and Drury) for nada.

Didn’t the Canes obtain Rants as a finisher for the POs? I thought that was the primary reason the Canes traded for Rants. As I understand it, the Canes had no real shot of re-signing Necas so it wasn’t a big deal to trade him. But if you trade Rants before the POs then what was the point of the trade from the Canes POV? A certainty that he would sign there?

Yes, it's complicated. But, if the Canes reported offer is true (12.5-13 x 8) and Rantanen doesn't accept by the deadline, I think that would be a massive red flag and a slap in the face to Canes management. Sure, I agree that Rantanen was acquired due to his hefty playoff pedigree, but if he's not resigned and there is a renters market for him on deadline day... the Canes will have a tough decision to make. If the only return is a late 1st and a B prospect... then maybe they roll the dice. But if a team is willing to pay a 1st, 2nd, and a very nice young player to rent Rantanen... then Carolina must consider or they're derelict in their duty, imho.

Best case for the team and player is he gets hot, resigns in Carolina, and becomes a main offensive cog. But my Spidey sense is telling me it won't be so easy.

I’m an Avs fan but I’d like Rants to do well with the Canes. He’s elite as a player but adjusting to a completely different system isn’t easy especially if your opportunities to score are reduced. It’s completely different for Necas (one gets the sense that he feels unshackled). Not to be rude but I just can’t see how the Canes can recoup their investment but WTH do I know? Anyway, best of luck to Rants and the Canes.
