Here's the poll from the first 5 or so days after the trade with everyone swiftly making up their mind that Canes won. Minds change over time according to the results - shocker. It'll probably change again soon!

Hockey fans are sheep. One person says something they all "baaaa".

Would be funny if he ends up back in the central *because* he makes Colorado pay...his salary again! stranger things have happened. (He could take a 1 year deal for 1 million like Paul Kariya once did with Colorado, and translate that into a cozy 8 year contract for the rest of his career.) puff puff pass.
That would be hilarious.

Zero chance of it happening IMO.

Ownership/management and Rants have bad blood now. Won’t be surprised to see him in a Dallas jersey.

I’m predicting he will end up on a central division team.

Reactionaries are idiots, regardless. Colorado fans who were on the ledge after the trade because they underestimated Necas and didn’t realize the kind of player he was or how well he’d fit with MacK are just as stupid as the people writing off the Rantanen in Carolina situation because of what is the NHL’s equivalent of getting together for a cup of coffee so far.

If Rantanen struggles the rest of the season and playoffs, does he end up getting less than $10M aav on his next contract?
Not 10M, unless he insist on going to a contender.

It's good to remember not a single trade close to TDL has worked in the past 10 years, so even a decent playoff performance can save alot for Rantanen. And playoffs success is why Carolina got him.

I think it's pretty unrealistic to expect fans to not have/voice opinions - and often silly ones... It's fandom after all.

Anyone know why he didn't play today? Canes scored 7 goals and I thought he'd have a 4 point game and then saw he was a scratch?

LBI according to nhl.com

Hope he's okay! 4 nations coming up, Canes can get healthy and a strong run to playoffs!

Maybe we'll see it soon. :sarcasm:

Do you blame a guy with his offensive skill and talent being forced to play with Jesperi Kotkaniemi as your primary center?

I didn't express an opinion on the rationale behind his trade request.

I would guess that the larger issue was getting bumped from the 1st PP unit. It undoubtedly hurt his numbers in 23-24 and thus cost him money. Carolina didn't do anything wrong in that regard; the Canes finished 2nd in the league last season with Bunting/Guentzel on the top unit. Necas was just a victim of Rod throwing spaghetti against the wall and it sticking without him.

I've watched 99% of Rantanens career. This season was easily his worst, and last season wasn't great, either. He's become really sloppy, and his defence is basically non-existant. He has a special skill of being able to put up 2-3 points while playing like complete ass.

Yeah ok I've been around enough to be pretty calm about this. You get a shiny new toy, score a bunch of points and go streaking, meanwhile missing the forest for the trees. Rantanen is a ferrari could have had a couple of goals against the jets the other night. If the pace is the same 30 games from now maybe.

So did Colorado when they offered him 11.75x8
Friedman speculated Carolina would offer $12.5-13 AAV but yes, he did report that figure that Colorado offered. It’s def possible he won’t get as much gross as that Colorado deal if things don’t work out in Carolina and the MacKinnon effect starts the conversation leaguewide about his value.

That’s all fair, and i’m not disputing any of that. All I can tell you from watching all of his games with Carolina so far is that he’s been the opposite of your last point since he’s been here with us. Playing quite well, just hasn’t put the stats up. Posts hit, bad misses from line mates he’s set up, lots of good plays that just don’t come together because there’s clear learning of each other’s games between him and the guys he’s playing with. He’s not going to hit the same points he hit with MacKinnon and Makar as teammates, but i’ll take this version of Rantanen all day long if he continues to create danger and tilt the ice in Carolina’s favor every time he’s on the ice.

Of course, i’m also just having and voicing an opinion that it’s frustrating when judgements are made so early and are often flip flopped on by the swaying of wind. It’s reductive snd low intelligence discourse to view things with such a lack of nuance.

I think there's a difference a lot of other fans don't realize having not watched him as closely. Rants always put up points in Colorado, but in his last couple years he stopped playing physical, hounding the puck and winning battles that weren't initiated by another player.

Some of us just got frustrated watching such a talented player coast and score off insane efforts by MacK or Nuke. It worked for the Avs, but it doesn't work when you want $13mil a season. Necas has been a great change as a result because he does everything Rantanen stopped doing and does it at the same speed as MacK. Not as good, but sometimes it's not just about skill but effort.

So my guess is Rantanen hasn't changed a lot (albeit I haven't watched him), but he still looks great if you don't know the difference.

Fans, not even necessarily Colorado fans, were "on the ledge" because of the obvious disparity in numbers, not because they were stupid. The comment above is what is stupid. Tulsky should have traded for MacK, not Miko according to your logic.

Literally a handful of games and people have their minds fully made up about Rantanen being a flop and Carolina f***ing up by making this trade. Doesn’t matter that his Canes team has been ravaged by the norovirus since Rantanen showed up, guy isn’t allowed to get his feet under him or have a chance to acclimate to a new system or new teammates or anything. Doesn’t matter that he’s still looked dangerous and has created chances and opportunities and opened space for others or generally has made a positive impact since whenever he’s touched the ice. HFboards boxscore watches have made their swift and objective judgement.

But you are also choosing to focus on a minority of posters and hot takes, when the vast majority of folks in this thread which I've read, on all sides of the fandom, have been saying that, despite how it has gone so far, Rantanen will undoubtedly not remain on such a cold-streak.

It also seems fair if others may be pointing out usage and systemic differences which may affect how this plays out going forward.

And the majority of Avs fans on the HF-Avs forum were also not on a ledge about the trade either. Most, while saddened by the loss of a beloved player, and not being able to make it work, majority also said they did not want him to be paid the $13-14M it was being reported was now the new ask, and also did not want the Avs to let him walk to UFA and get nothing. There were a few vocal naysayers immediately for sure, but outside of the surprise, it seemed many more were happy CMac was proactive and had the guts to make a tough decision, and get a top-player, and a very solid package for a pending UFA. Most of us had seen Rantanen's trade as possibility for more than a year, and it's been a long ongoing debate how much was too much for the Avs to offer him in their tight cap situation.

I'm sure if one pays more attention to the wider social media, which is full of low-information types, then there were likely far more of what you are referring to on both extremes.
