Here's the poll from the first 5 or so days after the trade with everyone swiftly making up their mind that Canes won. Minds change over time according to the results - shocker. It'll probably change again soon!

Hockey fans are sheep. One person says something they all "baaaa".

Would be funny if he ends up back in the central *because* he makes Colorado pay...his salary again! stranger things have happened. (He could take a 1 year deal for 1 million like Paul Kariya once did with Colorado, and translate that into a cozy 8 year contract for the rest of his career.) puff puff pass.
That would be hilarious.

Zero chance of it happening IMO.

Ownership/management and Rants have bad blood now. Won’t be surprised to see him in a Dallas jersey.

I’m predicting he will end up on a central division team.

Reactionaries are idiots, regardless. Colorado fans who were on the ledge after the trade because they underestimated Necas and didn’t realize the kind of player he was or how well he’d fit with MacK are just as stupid as the people writing off the Rantanen in Carolina situation because of what is the NHL’s equivalent of getting together for a cup of coffee so far.

If Rantanen struggles the rest of the season and playoffs, does he end up getting less than $10M aav on his next contract?
Not 10M, unless he insist on going to a contender.

It's good to remember not a single trade close to TDL has worked in the past 10 years, so even a decent playoff performance can save alot for Rantanen. And playoffs success is why Carolina got him.

I think it's pretty unrealistic to expect fans to not have/voice opinions - and often silly ones... It's fandom after all.

Anyone know why he didn't play today? Canes scored 7 goals and I thought he'd have a 4 point game and then saw he was a scratch?

LBI according to nhl.com

Hope he's okay! 4 nations coming up, Canes can get healthy and a strong run to playoffs!

Maybe we'll see it soon. :sarcasm:

Do you blame a guy with his offensive skill and talent being forced to play with Jesperi Kotkaniemi as your primary center?

I didn't express an opinion on the rationale behind his trade request.

I would guess that the larger issue was getting bumped from the 1st PP unit. It undoubtedly hurt his numbers in 23-24 and thus cost him money. Carolina didn't do anything wrong in that regard; the Canes finished 2nd in the league last season with Bunting/Guentzel on the top unit. Necas was just a victim of Rod throwing spaghetti against the wall and it sticking without him.

I've watched 99% of Rantanens career. This season was easily his worst, and last season wasn't great, either. He's become really sloppy, and his defence is basically non-existant. He has a special skill of being able to put up 2-3 points while playing like complete ass.

Yeah ok I've been around enough to be pretty calm about this. You get a shiny new toy, score a bunch of points and go streaking, meanwhile missing the forest for the trees. Rantanen is a ferrari could have had a couple of goals against the jets the other night. If the pace is the same 30 games from now maybe.

So did Colorado when they offered him 11.75x8
Friedman speculated Carolina would offer $12.5-13 AAV but yes, he did report that figure that Colorado offered. It’s def possible he won’t get as much gross as that Colorado deal if things don’t work out in Carolina and the MacKinnon effect starts the conversation leaguewide about his value.

That’s all fair, and i’m not disputing any of that. All I can tell you from watching all of his games with Carolina so far is that he’s been the opposite of your last point since he’s been here with us. Playing quite well, just hasn’t put the stats up. Posts hit, bad misses from line mates he’s set up, lots of good plays that just don’t come together because there’s clear learning of each other’s games between him and the guys he’s playing with. He’s not going to hit the same points he hit with MacKinnon and Makar as teammates, but i’ll take this version of Rantanen all day long if he continues to create danger and tilt the ice in Carolina’s favor every time he’s on the ice.

Of course, i’m also just having and voicing an opinion that it’s frustrating when judgements are made so early and are often flip flopped on by the swaying of wind. It’s reductive snd low intelligence discourse to view things with such a lack of nuance.
