I'm sure we will get to Rantanen once we can get Georgiev's 8 year deal locked in.

I know this is a joke, but this is a good excuse to get in my hot take: I don't think they plan to extend Georgiev. If he stays it's because we're deep into UFA period without a new starter.

That’s certainly not a hot take.

I don’t think anybody expects Georgiev to get a new contract and stick around as an Av beyond this season.

The org will do the usual 2nd or 3rd round pick trade for a reclamation project or somebody’s disgruntled backup.

and we're gonna be mad he's a bottom tier goalie.

There is a slight difference between the caliber of player here.

Meier is not in any way, shape or form comparable to the Moose. Night and day difference, really.
Again hence why you'd add pieces to the Meier deal. But that type of trade would be what Mikko would get back at this point, a haul of picks and prospects and a some depth pieces.

On other words meh. Might as well ride this core to sunset with Mikko.
Correct. Everyone saying trade Mikko is expecting getting some big win now pieces but that isn’t happening mid season with 5 months left on his contract. It’ll be a couple firsts, a big name prospect, another decent prospect, a ~middle 6 winger(or equivalent dman) and some later round picks. That’s what to expect in a Mikko trade if it were to happen.

Woah, you need to lower those expectations.

1st round pick
1st round pick
Top prospect
Decent prospect
Middle 6 winger
Later round picks

You expect that for a few months of Mikko Rantanen?

Ya that's way too much for a rental even if it's Rants.

I'm basing it like the Meier trade. Meier got a 1st, a 2nd, a 7th, 2 meh middle 6 wingers, a decent D prospect and another Dman prospect. Tbf I didn't take into conseideration that Meier was an RFA vs Mikko who would be a UFA which definitely would change things. So yeah that would definitely be too much if he's being brought in as a pure rental.

I really have to wonder the idea of anyone wanting to trade Moose away at any point.

Leads Avs in goals with 14. Makar/Colton 8, Mack/Mittelstadt 7.

Now his playing less minutes being in the 2nd line and still contributing. Last game 1+3.

So yeah, lets trade him for some magic beans while there is a cup to win...

In other words, it doesn't work.

Also no chance that this is the goalie tandem they start the season with.

It’s hard to say if this is more like Y2K or the end of the Mayan calendar.

And if Rantanen were Jake Plummer and he were to eventually sign, every government hating survivalist living in mountains would come down to drive through the streets to fire their guns into the air.

There's not a combination of realistically available players that will make this team better than Mikko at 9.25mil.

If Mikko wants to sign $9.25 x 8 then there is no discussion. But that is not the number at which we are looking. Rants' agent is looking for $13M. That does lead to a number of interesting combinations:

a) A $9.25 wing plus ( after send Georgie to the moon) a $7.25 goalie
b) A $7M wing, a $6.25M goalie and bring Drouin up to $6M
c) A $6M wing, Drouin at $6M, a goalie at $5M and ( after moving Wood) a $4M 3/4C

Would any of the bodies mentioned above be a better player than Mikko? Absolutely not. But an argument can be made that Scenario C would make the Avs a much better TEAM. And if Landy does not come back that last group turns into an $8M wing, Drouin, a $7M goalie, a $4M 3/4C and a $4.25M 5D.

Are there specific humans who could fill those roles from the ranks of UFA? That would be an exercise for another post after lots of homework. But that line-up would have all the holes filled for the next 5ish seasons, meaning Ritchie, Gulyayev, Foudy, Behrens, Wood, Georgie, 2025 2nd, 2026 1st and 2027 1st are all trade assets

I do not think Mikko is going anywhere. But I think a savvy GM needs to at least consider the possibilities.
