Surely Avs can’t afford to lose Mikko for nothing by letting him walk as a UFA. I’m sure they’ll work out a contact extension or will have to trade him this season no?
Even if they knew 100% that he was leaving, they would probably keep him for the playoffs.

There is about a zero percent chance Mikko is traded. He either signs or he walks, and odds are he will sign.
I actually think there is a good chance his deal will come out "ok" in the end, if the Avs have been so hardline on not going near MacK deal so far. For me, the odds are bigger that Mikko flinches and not the Avs, IF he wants to get the deal done during this season. Obviously if he just listens to his agent then this will drag all the way out to FA. I think last time it was Mikko who called his agent to take whatever was offered, while it did drag on until training camp had started.

Absolutely, it would just be a last dance type of thing. If you wanted to get value out of Mikko you would have to trade him before the deadline to a team that he is willing to re-sign him (and Mikko willing to re-sign with that team). Good luck finding one without retention.

A trade is not going to happen.

We'll see in the end, we know the general range. The longer it goes on, the more likely we see the upper side of it.

In the end, the difference between 13-12m matters far less for the Avs than Wood's overpayment. They gotta stop paying the lower guys over market and start getting ELCs integrated.

Yeah. In the end, does it really matter if a top guy is "overpaid" by 500k or even 1.5M? It matters f*** all if he pulls his weight, which Rantanen has done so far during his career. Even if he takes a sweetheart deal, all that is neglected if a 3-4M dollar 3rd line winger is playing like a 13th forward. Which is actually very much more likely to happen.

Or a 3M dollar goalie playing like an ECHL goalie...

Yup... now I do think the contract probably won't age all that well. By year 5 or 6 it is probably bad, but that's just the nature of these UFA deals. But I'm also in the camp that 2029 shouldn't matter on building the team today. This is a team that needs to win now above all else.

Mikko looked like trash out there last night until he made the deft pass to MacK on the ENG. Made a few plays that showed his unique skills and then missed the net with the shot. Way too many periods of standing in a spot which made him easy to defend. Lots of passes off players, some leading to chances the other way.

I know points production is the way most look at this game but I'm really having a hard thinking he could get MacK money or more. That would be ridiculous. Put him on a weaker team and he's not producing nearly as much as we see when he's out with the second line. When I see a guy like Logan go out there and create havoc in a tied game in the third that leads to his goal I just find Mikko's inability to show such a motor when the game is on the line off-putting. Even if Nate does stupid shit with the puck, he's trying to create things and the defense is forced to adjust for him. Mikko? Just stand in his preferred lanes and you'll neutralize a lot of his value.

I don't know what it is about Mikko and why I don't enjoy him more.

I mean, the dude constantly looks like shit but in 9 games he has 4 goals and 10 assists and is third on the team in xGF% at even strength. My god...Ross Colton is leading the team here!!! 69.86% at even strength is stout work from RosCo.

Anyways...I'm just amazed at how Mikko causes such a disconnect between what I think I am seeing and what the stats show happened. Crazy how a guy can look so bad, yet provide such great results.

What's crazy is the hate he's getting here...

If you remember, Landy got a similar treatment at the time of his contract renewal. People here started floating that he could get $9M and things got a little heated...

The Rantanen hate started when people here started floating that he could get $14M... That's when this went sideways... If you go back and review the thread, up until maybe 3 weeks ago, you will probably find that most posts against re-signing him referred to +$13M cap hit.

I doubt there are still many who would prefer to NOT re-sign him at a cap hit of $12M +/-$500K.

I get what you are saying and his impending contract does have me absolutely worried...but I've felt this way about Mikko for pretty much his entire tenure with the Avs.

The dude is a f***ing stud at offense. He has the most lethal shot in the NHL. Everyone knows he's the right circle version of PRIME Ovechkin. But outside of that...what does he provide in a game? He doesn't really forecheck, backcheck or play great defense. He falls down constantly, to the point that it cost us a goal last night.

The dude looks like a f***ing useless player who somehow puts up 100+ points. He's a skating contridiction, partly truth and partly fiction.

You are right that it's crazy I feel this way. But why do I? And why are there more than just me that feel this way? There is something distinct about his game that is causing this and I don't think we've really nailed it down.

As for me...maybe it's just the idea of a winger wanting as much money as the league's best center. It might just be a money thing that I'm not willing to admit.

But I really don't believe that to be the case. This isn't just aimed at you @GoNordiquesGo, I just want someone to give me one thing to watch Rants do other than shoot the puck. I'll try to concentrate on that over the next several games and see if it helps me come away with a different perspective.

This is Rants in a nutshell. ⬆️

- Mikko plays like a steaming pile of garbage
- He gets a bunch of points regardless
- Part of the fanbase mad at him for being lazy and careless
- Other part of the fanbase mad at the fans criticizing a 100 pts player

Until next game where the exact same thing happens.
