It would be worth a lot more if you let the other team talk to him and his agent.

I feel like this could work our really great or really poorly. Avs GM not letting Carolina negotiate or even notifying many teams he was on the block doesn't bode well, unless you're NY or Toronto and money is an illusion.

Canes going all in and then being like "oh wait nvm" is hilariously terrible asset management.

Can someone remind me of times this has happened in the past?
Hartford traded Chris Pronger for Brandon Shanahan. Shanahan hated Hartford and forced his way out within a year to the Detroit superteam. Hartford recieved Keith Primeau. Primeau was flipped two and a half years later for Rod Brind'amour.

On topic, I don't think Carolina will let Rantanen go as a rental, they'll keep him for this playoff run. They've been desperate for some forward to go on a stupid hot streak in the playoffs, and Rantanen is the best candidate for doing so they've ever had.

Carolina can waste 8m on Martinook and Kotkaniemi but not willing to pay for the guy they traded for?

It all sounds like Necas wanted out of Carolina if that is the case.
why is it always the Habs fans that think the Canes are cheap? If you’ve been paying any attention, money isn’t the issue, it’s whether or not he wants to spend 8yrs in Raleigh or go to UFA.

At 28, he's likely peaked and a team will be paying him for past stats with MacKinnon and Makar as his teammates.
Pretty much. Most teams will not be getting the Colorado version of Rantanen. Yet they will be paying him like Mack and Makar are still feeding him looks all game long.

Another one to add to the list of possibles (if he leaves Carolina).

Vegas - Dorofeyev, Connelly (picked 19OA in 2024), Holtz and a 2nd (or 2 x 2nds) if Carolina are happy to take young players

Friedman says IF Carolina does trade him as a rental, there's pretty much every team in the mix who can go for him, as the canes retaining 50% puts him at just over 2 mill.

Teams that know they can't extend him will look at him and mentioned a lot of the top teams and then postulated what the price might be since so many teams can be on him at his price tag at 50%.

Vegas will find a way to get him for 25% of his cap hit via double retention, and only give up their former 1st round picks Brenden Donk or Zach Flibbett.

Lots of speculation sure, but the last think I’d call Elliotte Friedman would be a “hack”
He's speculating on the "reports" of others, which is those hacks pulling this shit out of their ass.

Rantanan has only played 1 home game since he was traded. He's actually been here a total of like 3 days with all the away games and 4N. Nobody is thinking of trading him, noone. If anything, we just want him to get settled in before we begin contract negotiations.

Just because you don’t like what someone is saying doesnt mean you have to try to discredit them or play victim, as you like to do constantly on the Canes’ board.

Theres certainly enough smoke around the Canes potentially flipping Rantanen to consider it a real possibility.

While I don't discount the possibility that they can flip him what smoke has there been? Has anyone reported a source within the organization talking about the possibility of flipping him? Or is it just people making a (logical to be fair) jump that Carolina may not want to risk what happened with Guentzel happening again? Especially given what it cost to get Rantanen.

I am gonna go on a hunch that Carolina gm is likely having some buyer remorse….and now he’s stuck between a rock and a hard place. Flip him for .50 cents on the dollar or keep him and sign him to a monster contract hoping he lives up to it.

Or you keep Rantanen and try to win the Stanley Cup this year.
If he walks he walks that's life in the big city.

Trading him for futures at this point is dumb and puts Carolina further away from the finish line. You basically trade out of their most legit chance to win the cup since 2006 for some picks that might contribute in 2029? nonsensical.

I’d say that Friedman doesn’t speculate that much unless there’s something to it. If he keeps banging the drum saying they may look to flip him if not signed, I take that as smoke for sure.

Pagnotta, Seravalli, etc all have been speculating as well, but Friedman certainly has the credibility. I don’t think he’d just put it out there if it wasn’t something the Canes were considering.

Not saying they are cheap. They are wasting 8m for easily replaceable players.
Your whole team is easily replaceable players. What the Canes pay Kotkaniemi and Martinook doesn't really affect anything to do with Rantanen.

If the Canes are offering $12.5-13m x 8 for Rantanen which is what is being talked about then that's the highest offer that he has received at any point in his career and more than what Colorado was willing to do.

Why would the Canes come out and say he's $15m per year, please become the highest paid player in the league for no reason?
