Guentzel is probably the closest comp, Rantanen is IMO a better player so you're probably looking at a guaranteed 1st round pick, three 2nds or equivalent prospects, and a roster player that might be good but also might not. Maybe one of those seconds or equivalent goes up to a first?

From the Caps (not that I'm suggesting either team do this, just because they're a contender and I know their pool):
25 1st (no restrictions), conditional 26 1st (26 2nd unless Caps make cup final in either 25 or 26), Hendrix Lapierre, Vincent Iorio, Leon Muggli, Andrew Mangiapane

Rantanen (doesn't even need to be retained), Carolina's best AHL vet to throw Hershey a bone

~10 games into the 2013-2014 season the Islanders traded a 1st a 2nd and Matt Moulson to Buffalo for Thomas Vanek. He played 44 games for them but wouldn’t agree to a contract extension so they traded him along with a 5th round pick to Montreal for a former second round pick and a conditional 2nd rounder at the trade deadline.

Buffalo, who was rebuilding, sold Moulson at the deadline for basically the same value that the Islanders got for Vanek (two 2nd round picks).

An absolute boondoggle out of Garth Snow with those series of trades.

As a Canes fan, I still don’t think they’ll flip him, but I also doubt they get him extended by 3/7, so just wondering what other teams’ fans would potentially offer up for him.

What is Rantanen worth to other teams, strictly as a rental at a $2.3M cap hit (50% retention on his already retained cap hit of approximately $4.6M)?

I don't see how Rants gets flipped unless there is a sign and trade in place. But really, who will give up anything when he'll be a free agent in July, 2025? Even as a rental. But wouldn't that mean Carolina is giving up on signing Rantanen to a long term contract by flipping him? Makes no sense.

As I mentioned before - Rants isn't a fit for Carolina's defensive style of play. Mikko needs time and space to operate. That was created by Nathan Mackinnon for all these years as Rantanen set up shop in the circle to the left of the goalie. He is a superb sniper with a very accurate shot. But Rants isn't physical (one on one, he gets knocked on his keister all the time) and for the most part, he can't create his own shot. Where he excels is in open space where he can use his long strides to launch his lasers.

Carolina is in between a rock and a harder place. The Hurricane's best strategy is hope. I can't see Mikko signing anything before the trade deadline. Why do that? Mikko will be a coveted free agent at the very top of the FA list in the summer. Some starved team who needs a "star" for the fan base will offer him at least $13M/AAV for 7 years. Maybe even more. Maybe it all works out for Carolina. But man, some nervous times ahead for Hurricanes fans.

It depends on the offers they were getting for Necas too. There were rumours about his availability for awhile, which to me, says the Canes were probably not looking at him as a core piece moving forward, but recognized that his value to other teams should have been high. If they weren't getting the kind of offers for Necas that they wanted, it's not a bad idea to trade him for a guy who has been top 10 in scoring a number of times, to see if they could do better at the deadline and get a couple of firsts, or a 1st and a couple of prospects. It would be a gamble of course, but if they wanted a first and a roster player for Necas, couldn't get it, and flipped him for Rantanen, where they get a 1st, and three 2nd round picks, and then flip a couple of those 2nds for a lesser player they still might be able to extend affordably, then they could still end up even from what they had with Necas. It's a lot of moving parts though for sure.

Jeff Skinner (cap purposes), 2025 STL 2nd (pick in the 40-45 range), 2026 1st, Matt Savoie

Hopefully that would do it. Skinner would have to waive, so that complicates things, but maybe he agrees to a nostalgic destination?

I can't imagine Carolina having interest in Skinner. We might have to swap in Arvidson instead.

Money won't be the problem. Canes wouldn't have made the trade if they didn't think they could sign him. There were numerous interviews with Tulsky after the trade, where he states that He knew what Rantanen was asking and that they were prepared to make a competitive offer. If he doesn't extend, it will be because of fit. I'm not him, but if he wants to shake the "riding the Mac" coattails, he should sign with the Canes. He immediately becomes the teams best player.

Theoretically possible, but not very likely.

Unlikely that the Canes trade Rantanen to another contender for futures.

Even less likely that another contender gives the Canes the high present-value he could be worth, especially with double-retention.

Zero chance that non-contenders would be interested in the remnant of his contract.

This is probably a non-starter.

Sounds like Rants would be great on the Leafs with Marner, Nylander and Matthews all able to draw opponents attention away from Rants giving him time and space.
