Matthews is the league’s “premiere goalscorer” who can’t seem to score when the moment gets big. This was just another missed opportunity for him.

If he had scored in OT the narrative would have changed. I would’ve listed him next to Marner. But he didn’t.

This is incredibly silly thinking. Along the lines of Binnington winning a random game 7 where he wasn’t really challenged much. Narratives shouldn’t change based on one game. If they do they are shitty weak narratives.

No he didn’t binnington sucked and then made the odd big save (at important times to be fair). He let in at least one shot goal every game and the entire game last night swimming around his crease out of position.

The save on Matthew’s was clutch. But otherwise he was unimpressive and uncomfortable to watch. The result and a big save doesn’t change that.

I know it's the charmain ultra soft rules (IIHF) next tournament, but i dunno how you can keep Wilson off the team.

Wilson should get in for 2026, he's kept it up over the whole season thus far.

Keep hating on Binnington, but he's stood tall on the big stage yet again. And it's not like Canada is overflowing with goalie options anyway. Thompson won't get the job for personality reasons. Blackwood is the only other option, and he'll be in over Montembault next year.

Auston Matthews - I thought he coasted through the first 3 games, and while he got some chances tonight when he got paired with Brady, he once again couldn’t score in the big moment.

Devon Toews - He was okay with Makar, bad without. May have played himself off the Olympic team.
Mark Stone - Still a great NHLer, but couldn’t keep up with the pace of best on best.

Imo Brady tkachuk is way better than his brother. Matthew is soft always injured and when he fights he always goes for someone smaller, plus he's selfish. Brady is a big dude who can throw his weight around and has good hands and good luck trying to clear him out of the crease

That’s the book on most elite goalies. You can’t beat the elite ones down low. They are just too good. All 4 of Canada’s goals, 2 high blocker and 2 high glove were up high on helle. I’m sure the rest of the nhl has taken note moving forward.

Sam Bennett showed he's that greaser that can pot a critical goal under pressure. You win with those guys in the playoffs. Haven't always been a fan but I thought he was one of Canada's more effective players.

Don't get how people are on Binnington. He was their best player last night. Putting aside the saves, his puck work killed the U.S. forecheck before it could even get established a number of times.

Last, but not least... Slavin. Always knew he was a great player, but he's always been in that stodgy Carolina system. Man oh man, is he impressive.

I concur. What really made me realize this was tonite. How many leaf failures have their been and marner taking a lot of the heat for playoff dissapointment. I’m as anti marner as they come. Marner and his puck over glass penalties because he’s afraid to get hit. Someone had posted a stat on the leaf forum, marner shot distance in regular season is 30 ft, his shot distance in playoffs is 40 ft. But what I think happened is he had strong leaders on team Canada to tell him don’t be afraid to go to dirty areas or open areas , everyone gets hit or knocked down. And where was marner on the winning goal? In the corner where pucks go. Why can’t matthews have these tough conversations with marner. Just shows you what great leaders like Crosby, mcdavid and mackinnon can do with marner that matthews can’t.

Hughes kinda has to “gel” with his line mates and has trouble sometimes when placed with other talented players not named Jesper Bratt. His biggest attribute is his skating and vision and when your out against the best of the best that all have the same level of speed and intelligence he just looked out of his depth. He also has to be the puck carrier on his line and generate in that manner.

He showed in his one playoffs so far he could be productive and a factor so I am not overly concerned against NHL competition. And if Jack has shown anything he constantly improves upon his game and his weaknesses. For instance I thought he broke up quite a high number of plays on the back check with his hustle. Hope he takes this as a learning experience.
