I’m bored and am actually somewhat surprised there’s not a thread already about this will all the speculation that CAR may flip Rantanen if he won’t sign by 3/7,so…

As a Canes fan, I still don’t think they’ll flip him, but I also doubt they get him extended by 3/7, so just wondering what other teams’ fans would potentially offer up for him.

What is Rantanen worth to other teams, strictly as a rental at a $2.3M cap hit (50% retention on his already retained cap hit of approximately $4.6M)?

Canes going all in and then being like "oh wait nvm" is hilariously terrible asset management.

Can someone remind me of times this has happened in the past?

I mean, it would indicate that they intended to sign him rather than rent him, but couldn't.

But still, pretty embarrassing.

I am not sure that they can retain another 50%, can they? (Genuinely asking, I am not sure)
You can retain up to 75%, with one team retaining 50% and the other retaining 50% of what's left.

As far as I know, only Chicago has retained, so they should be able to.

Guentzel is probably the closest comp, Rantanen is IMO a better player so you're probably looking at a guaranteed 1st round pick, three 2nds or equivalent prospects, and a roster player that might be good but also might not. Maybe one of those seconds or equivalent goes up to a first?

From the Caps (not that I'm suggesting either team do this, just because they're a contender and I know their pool):
25 1st (no restrictions), conditional 26 1st (26 2nd unless Caps make cup final in either 25 or 26), Hendrix Lapierre, Vincent Iorio, Leon Muggli, Andrew Mangiapane

To Washington:
Rantanen (doesn't even need to be retained), Carolina's best AHL vet to throw Hershey a bone

So you’re telling me you traded Necas for a few games of Rantanen ?
I’ll never get this “you” or “we” terminology when it comes to sports teams. No, “I” didn’t do anything, “they” did. Would “I” have traded Necas for a rental without an extension on the way, nope, but “they” must have thought an extension was/is possible. None of this is really the point of the thread.

The point is to discuss then”insidurr” reports that the Canes might end up flipping him.

I never get why people get a bug up their butt about a sports fan saying "We" or "Our" when referring to their team.

Figured a 1st would be a prerequisite, especially in a supposedly “down” draft year. My best guess would be 1st + decent prospect, and maybe middling top 9 F for filler and I would think he prob does bring in a bit more than Guentzel did.

Not sure the Canes would deal him within the division, so if they did, I imagine it’d be quite costly.

It seem Rantanen probably want to test the market and don't forget a possible return to Colorado this summer. Rantanen doesn't show same stats since the trade and Necas continue to produce.

From the Oilers:

Jeff Skinner (cap purposes), 2025 STL 2nd (pick in the 40-45 range), 2026 1st, Matt Savoie

Hopefully that would do it. Skinner would have to waive, so that complicates things, but maybe he agrees to a nostalgic destination?
