Tavares signing is a mistake in hindsight. I'm guessing that's the standard being used here.

Otherwise, decisions such as the core signings, Murray trade, and Kadri trade are much bigger mistakes at the time they were done.

Yeah despite the domino effect it had no one could’ve predicted COVID or just how bad Dubas would screw up the negotiations of the Big Three. Should never have let Nylander sit as long as he did, and he way overpaid Matthews and Marner for far too short of a term than the money should’ve dictated.

The stench of failure is the same for everyone.

It stinks.

After signing Tavares, the second biggest mistake Dubas made was promising Nylander he wouldn't be traded. Dubas' entire first year was a long string of smelly rotten mistakes, one after another. The fact he was able to make so many mistakes, for so long, doesn't give me much hope for this franchise.

I don’t expect competence, or even plain old common sense, is gonna magically appear now that he's gone.

Who does that anyway?

Who gives a verbal promise to a guy that held out until last minute he wouldn't get traded?

And then actually keeps the promise?

That promise screwed this team for five f***ing years. Thankfully Treliving is under no obligation to keep it. Treliving's first big move should be to dump this overrated chump.

It's the only way out of this stinking mess Dubas left.

Some of us said from the start that the Tavares signing was a mistake.

Some of us still can't see it, even with the benefit of hindsight.

The fanbase is large enough that every decision has detractors. I can accept that.

But, I can also assure you 27% were not against the Tavares signing at the time.

Kadri trade is by product of the Tavares signing which put them in the spot to sign Mrazak and Murray. Those signings really didn’t affect any outcome, especially if they don’t give up any more asset on Murray.

It is actually mind blowing he had such ferocious support from a part of the fanbase. It was death by a thousand cuts and some people absolutely loved it and defended it. Crazy.

Probably not. More credit to those few of us who had it right from the start?

The Marner contract leading is either telling you how good of a GM he is or how dumb this fanbase is.

Marner was slightly overpaid at the time and is well worth his contract now.

Giving him a verbal NTC was dumb, but at least non-binding. Considering that Nylander was the one of the four big signings who actually played to the value of the contract, the verbal promise didn't hurt us at all.
