I don't think Finland's goalies are superior. Maybe in terms of depth, but I think the pairing Varlamov/Bobrovsky is better than Rask/whoever. Even in terms of depth there are plenty of excellent goalies in KHL. I agree in regards to defensemen, though.

I'll take Rask/Rinne over Varlamov/Bobrovsky. Rinne has one injury filled season and everyone forgets about him.

What has Finland done to deserve being ranked 1? What in their play is so amazing that despite the results speaking against them would make you put them first? "They are tough to play against"?
Well they've been more consistent in the Olympics with 2 bronze and 1 silver in the last 3 Olympics. They've won the 2014 World Juniors and silver at the World Championships this year.

How are 2 bronzes and 1 silver better than 1 gold and 1 silver, though? And Sweden has actually won the 2013 IIHF World Championship and the 2012 World Juniors, as well. Finland won the 2013 edition, by the way.

Finland won the 2014 World Juniors not the 2013 if that's what you're talking about. Finland is always in the fight and I think at 2018 they'll be better than Sweden, they have a system that can be good on both ice rinks. I guess the results are better for Sweden but it's like Finland is always in there fighting for those #2-#3 spots every year in every tournament.

You're right, I thought it went by the year in which the tournament starts. And, yeah, they might be in the fight, but at least to me it seems they're always missing just that little something, whereas with Sweden, even if they finish lower, you're often left feeling they could've gone all the way every single tournament.

1. Sweden
2. Russia
3. Finland
4. Czech Republic
5. Slovakia
6. Switzerland
7. Germany
8. Denmark
9. Norway
10. Latvia

Slovakia is still better than we are.

It's funny how you Canadians all the time are saying best on best is the only real tournament. World championships don't mean anything bla bla bla when we are talking about Canada. But now suddenly Worlds means something lol.

Seriously you Canadians think olympic gold means alot then I don't understand how you think Finland can be ahead of Sweden. Finland never have won any best on best.

You think Finland will better in 2018? We will see but the gold this year is Finland's first medal in many years in WJC. Sweden on the other side has since 2008 Sweden has 1 gold, 4 silvers and 1 bronze in WJC. Sweden has been in the final three years in row. We have some good drafts. I don't see how Finland should be better than Sweden in 2018.

Sometimes I think Canadians want to dismiss Sweden to make Canada look better.

Our top tier prospects last few years are far superior to swedens and we havent even started. 2016 and 2017 draft years are jackpot that will once and for all push us way beyond Sweden what it comes to young forwards atleast. 2018 might still be too early but at 2022 Finland could be on paper 2nd best team in the world after Canada even better than USA.

But its funny when we talk about olympics and stuff Sweden is quick to point out they have 1 gold medal and point that to say they have been better than Finland
But when it comes to world juniors they themselves start to point out at the other medals and final losses theyve had rather than the golds. WJC History has Finland 3 gold medals Sweden 2. By the same olympic criteria that sweden uses to say they are superior having more gold medals, Finland has been similiarly superior at WJC having more gold medals to sweden.

Your hate for Canadians is truly funny.

We were talking about Finland's hockey team in all tournaments not only best on best, why does it matter that I'm Canadian? I'm talking about all tournaments and how they're doing in all aspects, junior included.

I don't care about dismissing Sweden, I have nothing against that country. My point was that Finland is consistently in the medals every year it seems. They're getting better every year with talent level.

You're always on the Canadians trying to pick a fight, you can't pick a fight if your eating Silver.

That's true. Gold is what matters. Finland has been superior in WJC, while we've been the superior team in the Olympics.

Saying that Finland will be the the 2nd best team in the world on paper in 2022 might be true, but it's way, way, waaaay to early to know.

Finland won't have a superior squad in 2018 (on paper). However, paper really doesn't matter since Finland is always up there fighting for the medals anyway.

And please specify in which way your top tier prospects are far superior to Swedens in the last few years. Since 2010, Sweden had 13 players go in the first round, Finland had 8. Seems pretty even to me.

Predicted team in 2018 if we manage to qualify for OG:

Mikkel Bødker - Lars Eller - Nikolaj Ehlers
Niklas Hardt/Oliver Bjorkstrand - Frans Nielsen - Niklas Jensen
Frederik Storm - Jesper Jensen/Kristoffer Lauridsen - Jannik Hansen
Patrick Bjorkstrand - Peter Regin - Mikkel Aagård

Philip Larsen - Oliver Lauridsen
Jesper B Jensen - Markus Lauridsen
Sonny Hertzberg - Stefan Lassen
Emil Kristensen

Frederik Andersen

That isn't a bad team at all actually. I hope Denmarks makes it.

Finland always seems tough to play against even though on paper they don't seem that strong. Same with Switzerland, I guess it's the system they play but for best on best I would rank the best European teams not based on medals:

1. Finland
2. Sweden
3. Russia
4. Czech Republic
5. Switzerland
6. Slovakia
7. Latvia
8. Germany
9. Slovenia
10. Denmark
11. Norway
12. Belarus
13. Austria

I just want to remind you that Norway beat Denmark in the last Three WHC. Last time we played Germany in whc we won 12-4. So why do you rank them higher than Norway?

I still don't know how anyone can think Finland will be better than Sweden in 2022? Actually Sweden has more drafted players in the first round the in the latest year. Since 2010 Sweden has 1 gold, 2 silver and one bronze. Finland has "only" 1 gold when they barely beat Sweden in OT.

Explain for me how you Can predict Finland to be better than Sweden in 2022. It's way too early to say.

Since 2010 Sweden has 1 silver and Finland 2 bronzes in olympics. That seems pretty even too me. I actually prefer the silver ahead of the bronzes. Because you has got a chance to play in the big game, the gold medal game.

Looking by results Sweden has been better than Finland. Someone said Finland fight for 2-3 places every year. He said they medals in everything.

Ok, let's take a check since 2005 (10 years):

Finland:
Worlds: 1 gold, 2 silver, 2 bronze
Olympics: 1, silver, 2 bronze
WJC: 1 gold, 1 bronze
U-18: 1 silver, 3 bronze

Total: 2 gold, 4 silver, 8 bronze=14 medals

Sweden
Worlds: 2 gold, 1 silver, 3 bronze.
Olympics: 1 gold, 1 silver
WJC: 1 gold, 4 silver, 1 bronze.
U-18 worlds: 3 silver, 2 bronze

Total: 4 gold, 9 silver, 6 bronze= 19 medals

Now Ray Ferraro and Erikfromfin, how are your precious Finland more constistent and better than Sweden?

Add: Ivan Hlinka tournament

Finland
2 silver, 1 bronze

Sweden
1 gold, 1 silver, 4 bronze.

Total with Ivan Hlinka:

Finland
2 gold, 6 silver, 9 bronze = 17 medals

Sweden
5 gold, 10 silver, 10 bronze = 25 medals

Once again how is Finland more constistent?

Finland was better than Sweden in Vancouver, I don't understand why do you feel that it's such an impossibility for Finland to be better again in 2022.

Because it's pure speculation. The same to say Swedenl will be better than Sweden. It's to early to say. But looking at WJC and NHL draft I don't understand how anyone can make a such claim that Finland will better than Sweden. It seems Erikfromfin think Sweden is #1 but just can't admit that and then he try to convice himself with other arguments.

In terms of the quality and quantity of individual players Sweden has always been ahead of Finland by a fair margin and will be for the foreseeable future. The main reason Finland sometimes finishes higher is because they play an extremely safe and boring defensive style of hockey at best best tournaments that is almost unwatchable, but effective. Plus they compete much harder in bronze medal games than their opponents usually do. On paper Sweden will almost certainly be better in 2022.

This.

Perhaps the finns don't always have the best team on paper, but they sure ice good teams almost every tournament.

Based on best on best results over the last ~20 years I would rank the Euros as follows:

SWE
CZE
FIN
RUS
SVK
SUI

Based on the quality of individual players right now and in the next 4 years.

SWE
Russia
Czech
Finland
SVK
Sui

In the long term, what I expect is:

Russia
SWE
Fin
Czech
Sui
SVK

Sweden is clearly number 1 at the moment. Then it is either Finland or Russia at second place. It seems that best on best tournaments Russia just can't get their machine working fully. In future I think Finland will have nice team, our young players look quite promising. After that, in 4th place I think it is Czech. Their players are old and their young players don't look very promising?

Other than that I really don't know.

Don't forget Finland was the runner up in the world cup 2004 (best on best) :)

It's not among the last 10 years. Why should I take the last 11 years? That make no sense. Also if I take a World cup silver to Finland then I need to take the other medals in account. The difference will not be big at all.

Although I'm not in favor of counting the World Cup, you do realize that it was hosted less than 10 years ago?

2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014. Count them and you will see it's 10 years. With 2004 it will be 11 years. Should I count world championships too?

Not like Canada fired over 50 shots versus Latvia and the States game was close. Quick was really good. Lundqvist and the Swedes didn't put up much of a fight. It was all Canada versus the Swedes.

That game would have been alot funnier with our three best players, Z, Sedin and Bäckström. What a shame they couldn't be there. But Canada just controlled that game. I wouldn't say they played boring.

Sounds like Canada.

I can only remember maybe 3 teams that have played exciting hockey at the olympics
Russia at Nagano
Sweden at Salt Lake
and USA at Vancouver

Canada was anything but boring these past few Olympics except for Torino which was just a piss off. The Canadian team that killed the Russian's was fun to watch in 2010 and the OT winner in that year as well. 2002 was fun to watch though slightly annoying as European players liked to try and injure the Canadians on dirty hits ie. Hamrlik nailing Fleury in the back.

In this Olympic year Canada put up the most dominating and controlling play that has ever been seen at these Olympics in a while. Scores would have been higher but usually the other teams goalie did quite well. There was no real low to super high moment for Canada this year so maybe that's why they seemed a bit boring.
