As mentioned, people are voting for these outdoor games with their wallets. And in terms of publicity, a whole shwack of non-hardcore hockey fans hear about these games. Only the dedicated fans would know about the ice being bad for what reason, and the NHL already has those folks.

Yeah, but all those casual fans are seeing an inferior product now.

My son says it's the RIGHT girl. I have no idea, of course. Other than taking 2 penalties, it was a decent period. The puck be bouncing.

Overkill or not, it makes the NHL more money and gives them more exposure.

Detroit/Toronto had the highest rated regular season game in 39 years at 4.4 million. Rangers/Devils drew 2.1 million viewers, highest rated regular season game on NBC that wasn't a Winter Classic. Higher ratings, more exposure, more money from ads, etc.

Beyond getting higher TV Ratings, they're drawing 50K+ in attendance, compared to 18k at a normal arena, at inflated prices. The Winter Classic had over 100k in attendance, no? Or at least close to it, I would imagine. 90k?

You're going to see more and more of this because fans are showing they want the outdoor games with their pockets.

Games in big market cities with big market teams will innately fill the stadium with little effort. It's not hard to fill any venue in NYC for a sporting event. Just because the stadium is filled doesn't mean people are actually enjoying sitting in 5 degree weather or that they're there for the game, it just means they bought/were given a ticket and went. And in that sort of weather, I doubt many of them really care too much about learning the game so much as they would rather be somewhere warm. When you hear interviews with the players that have to describe the ice in terms of "Well it's not the worst" and seeing them talk about their special heated benches and being decked head-to-toe in all their extra clothes to keep warm..I wouldn't think twice about sitting in my nice, heated house drinking a beer with a nice, hot dinner watching the same thing on my 50' TV. And you can even turn off Cee-lo's annoying ass.

For sure. I used to play pond hockey, too. Optimal temperature was right below freezing. I've played when it was around 0 and the ice would just be too cold. It's the same thing on an indoor rink.

A rink that's too cold is probably better than one that's too warm, but not by much.

I'm thinking about all that out door hockey they play in Minnesota and up in Canada. It's even colder there and all the time. God I'd love to do that again.

From what we have come to expect from this team in 1st periods it was solid.

Compared to most teams/games? Really bad.

Don't know about tonight, but a guy I work with who was at the Rangers-Devils game over the weekend said during every TV timeout the crew was out there working on the ice. He also said he could hear the players complaining about the ice.
