Confirmed with Link: Rangers trade Rupp to Wild for Darroll Powe and Nick Palmieri

I know when he was in Jersey he was always put in front of the net for the screen. Got a few tip ins by being in the trenches. Hes able to hold his own with the gloves off but youre right he doesnt do it often. His dad says hes been working on his board play, and getting more edge in his game, which lends itself well to what Torts likes to see. He certainly has the size do get it done and hes got decent footspeed.

If he is truly committed and ready to go, he will fit in well in Hartford. He fits the system Torts employs to a 'T'.

Exactly this...there are a lot of people who would kill to play for the Houston AHL affiliate and have a chance to get called up to play for the Wild. It does make you wonder a bit about his priorities (or at least his makeup). Not to mention, I happen to think DeBoer is an excellent coach and I would lean towards blaming the player in that situation for not making more of an effort to make it work.

I remember an interview with Giants coach Tom Coughlin - they asked him about the common excuse when a coach has been around one team for a long time that "sometimes the players reach a point where they need to hear the message from someone new". His response (paraphrasing): "I don't believe in that - sometimes the coaches reach a point where the people listening to the message need to be changed as well...so instead you surround yourself with people who won't get tired of listening to your message and keep tweaking so that it's always fresh to someone".

Palmieri has already ruined his reputation in New Jersey and Minnesota - I think he basically has one more shot (most because he IS that talented), but I wouldn't count on him making it happen, especially since GM Lou's specialty is evaluating hockey character. Heck, even got Kovalchuk to drink the Devils Kool-Aid.

I can understand where youre coming from, and cant hate on anyone for thinking that. Some kids take a bit longer to mature as well. I think in Nicks case he was always in a hockey crazed environment (insert witty Devils no fans remarks here). Going to Houston was a culture shock in many ways. I dont think he handled the situation well at all and should have just went to work on his game. Like I said before hes certainly not guaranteed to make it to the big club, but I think this will wake him up and he'll give it his best shot here.

Well MrEctions, I hope you are right because that would make it all the sweeter when he is scoring goals on Fatso.

The thing with Palmieri that has been frustrating is that he has the skills, strength and size to be a bottom-6 forward right now. He is a good skater too. It has supposedly been an effort/attitude problem for him but if it has been coaching problems it's possible the Rangers bought low on a skilled kid.

Me too, me too. If nothing else I now have a reason to drive 4-5 hours to Hartford a hell of a lot more often than I did before. And my daughter can get down and meet some players! Win-Win for me.... And if he makes the Rangers, I will most certainly be able to score some tickets, soooo even better!

Well Im not saying PDB is a bad coach or anything of the sort. Simply that when he came in he just used Nick as a whipping boy. Sure he gave him a shot, but as we have seen before how much of that was Lou saying play him here and see what he has. By giving him a shot on Kovalchuk's line, it doesn't necessarily mean PDB was the one who made that call. Theres two sides to every story, and all I know is one of em. From what I know PDB wasnt a fan of Nick whatsoever, and like Clarktard much more in that role.

Size wise I wanna say hes comparable to Pyatt, but has more speed to get in on the forecheck. He has a heavy shot as well but needs to learn how to get it off faster. Hell last year when he was home he was skating in the hometown rink during a HS practice and he shattered the glass behind the net with a wrister, made my mouth drop haha.

I think Palmieri could be a quality addition. Clearly wasn't working out with Minny, but as people have mentioned, the tools are there to be a solid role player. We just need to see a consistent effort. We lost some of the "hunger" when Dubi and Prust left, and I'm a firm believer that it's often easier to get that out of younger guys than it is with FA veteran acquisitions.

I'm from NY, but have been living in Houston for 15 years. It's definitely not Canada when it comes to hockey, but the fans are passionate. The city does have crappy attendance, but many AHL franchises do. The city itself is obviously not NY, but it's top 5 in size and has whatever you want to find in a big city. It's not like he had to move to some small town in Wyoming.

Yep, he has the skills and size to be a solid NHLer. Something has been holding him back. Hopefully he shatters that barrier the same way as that glass.

100% agree. That was a worry of mine coming into the season with Pyatt, Rupp, Asham and Halpern all in the bottom-6. Luckily, Pyatt has been great so far and Halpern and Asham seem to be good veteran additions.

I just get a feelig that another "minor" trade for a Dman is on the horizon. With all these moves today, this is Slats lining up his ducks...

He did say the city itself was very nice, but as you said there were not a lot of fans, although the fans that did come were great. But keep in mind in my hometown, which is tiny, we regularly drew 1k fans to HS games on the weekends. Thats quite a number for a small central ny town.

Old school hockey rink home of the old Clinton Comets (who then became the Mohawk Valley Comets of the NAHL) of the EHL. Got a ton of hockey history that the town prides itself on. Plus the beloved Ed Giacomin played for the Comets!

Its just not the same playing in Texas where the sport wasnt played until more recently.

Anyone know if Nick Palmieri has any relation to Kyle Palmieri?

Kyle is the better one. He was a 1st rd pick in 2009. Currently playing for Anaheim

Solid skill set but his Laziness grew old pretty quickly on Lou and Pete.

If Torts can motivate him it can be a big pay off for you guys but if he continues with his bad habits / work ethic, John might throw him off the GWB.

Thanks for the report, always one of the more classy posters on the Devils board.

Nailed it. If Rupp can find his offense from his days in PIT, this could be one of those win/win type deals.

Hahahahahahahaha, love the pic.

You guys fleeced us on this one. What a stupid trade by Fletcher. Unlike Rupp, Powe is actually useful, has some speed, and is a great PKer. Palmieri may turn into a solid 3rd/4th liner too.

Palmieri smells like the classic reclamation project. Hard to say what happens to a kid like this, but hopefully he gets himself back on track in this organization. Always nice when that happens.

Extremely dissapointed. Houston is not a great hockey market at all. He hated being down there and he is a true blue Northeast kid. Im not trying to make excuses for him but I literally just got off the phone with his father and he is ecstatic to be heading back to the NE and Hartford. Im telling ya, he's gonna come in a bust his ass to make it in NY. My uncle coached him growing up and was the one who got him into Prep after his 9th grade year. If he puts it together he's the best part of this deal, imo. Some might say Im biased in saying that, but I know the skill he has. When he was in Jersey he looed good, and then the coaching change with Deboer happened, and for whatever reason Nick said him and Pete never got along. He was always chastised for one mistake until it got to a point where they gave up on him. NJ fans think it was laziness, but that couldnt be further from the truth.

Sure hope he's not looking for a friend in Torts..

Chased out of NJ because of "one mistake." And the organization chastised and gave up on him after whatever he did? Is NJ's system/staff really that unrelenting and unforgiving? I don't know anything of what went on, but "chastising" seems to translate to "criticism of his game" and he's unreceptive to that criticism and wanted out of NJ because of that? Larsson, Tedenby, and Henrique seem to be turning out alright and they've all made some mistakes too.

I understand NJ and NY are different in terms of atmosphere, management and maybe just where Palmieri wanted to play, but wouldn't you want to work your butt off regardless of where you landed despite not liking your boss as much as you'd like to? I'd rather play my heart out and prove the naysayers wrong (hopefully he does that here :naughty:).

If he's consistently making mistakes that hurt his team, he shouldn't expect to get special treatment and just have all those mistakes go by the wayside. He's going to get ripped to shreds if he makes mistake after mistake by the coaching staff and - probably even more detrimental to what sounds to be an environmentally sensitive guy - NY fans. Torts won't stand for these "little mistakes" over and over, and if that's the route he's going to take, Torts will have him back in the AHL before he knows what happened. And if demotion is going to be regarded as another a problem for him or seen as "chastising" or "the organization giving up on him", what is going to make him want to work for us? Someone in this thread said earlier that he was pretty much handed a top-6 spot that he played himself out of. Torts isn't going to give him anything above the 3rd line. If he's unwilling to accept criticism, that's not good for any party involved.

At any rate, I hope you're right and I'm just talking out of my rear. We haven't seen anything these guys are going to do in a Rangers sweater, so I digress.

I agree, but even so, there are lots of people who would kill to play AHL hockey in Wyoming as well. You pay your dues wherever they tell you to pay your dues. If you bust your butt, you will eventually get to play in an arena where the fans are passionate in a city that suits you. Do you think that some 25 year old law intern wants to work 100 hours per week fetching coffee for their superior? No, you put up with the crap so that 5 years down the line, you earn the big bucks and get the respect you earned through hard work and persistence. Palmieri has done nothing to give him the right to complain about where he plays or who which fans he plays in front of. If he had proven himself in Houston for a year or two, he would have been called up to a team in a market with a passionate fan base.

Wow! Excellent deal. I can't believe they got more than a bucket of pucks for him.

I really like Mike Rupp. He's one of the brightest, smartest guys in the league, both off the ice and on the ice. Throughout his career, he's been one of the most useful, versatile "enforcers" in the NHL for the past decade. Really used his brains to play way over his athletic ability (or lack of it). I was excited when he was signed, but unfortunately, it looks like he simply is too slow at this point to be the player he was throughout his career.

I think this is a solid trade. Powe can be a useful player; he hasn't been too impressive with the Wild, but he gave a lot of teams fits as a Flyer. Frankly, I was surprised Philly let him go when they did. Picking up Palmieri and his potential is a nice bonus, too.

Hopefully, it works out for the Rangers. I think it is a bit of a stop gap move, but getting rid of Rupp's relatively overpriced deal is not a bad idea.

I can understand what youre saying completely. But as a friend and fan, having watched him get his cup of tea in Jersey in the top 6. I personally didnt see what or where he played himself out of that role. I thought he looked very good in his time there. From what Ive gathered PDB wanted him to be more physical than Nick has ever been in his short career. They wanted him to be a bigger/stronger Clarkson. And he simply is not that player. Skill wise I thought he looked good when given the chance. But to give a guy 9-10 games in the top 6 and say he played his way out of the role is a little misleading. Its tough for a guy who has come up playing one way to completely change his game in that amount of time. Im sorry if this sounds like excuses, but to me its what I took from the whole Jersey situation. Hes never been the physical/fighter type that they were looking for. I think hes changing his game to play with more "Jam" as his size lends itself well to that.
