Toughness might become more of a hastened addition when Panarin avoids corners and our other Russians and skilled guys avoid the crease . Not many goals scored from behind the net or the top of the circle these days be it skilled or non skilled guys shooting . I have preached for it for 10 years in here....I wanted Chara 5-6 years ago....and was laughed at...he was done....Blah blah blah....LOL....

Without trying to sound like a dick, I'm 42 and I've played hockey for years at a high level (still do) all the way to college and semi pro. They can call me a p***y all they want

I've been involved in some crazy shit far worse than the Wilson incident and I can tell you with certainty there is no room for any of that garbage at any level, especially at the NHL level.

It crosses the line and oh, surprise, its always the same douchebags who have anger management issues and cannot control themselves who are the ones doing it over and over again. A vast majority of players dont cross the line and "know the code" and if they do you can bet your ass its for a good reason (likely because of the repeat offender who shouldn't be in the game in the first place)

The NHL has a duty to its fans, old and young, to get it right and show a quality product on the ice.

John Scott hit it on the head. If actions like this only produce a $5K fine (which is like $75 for someone that makes a 75,000 salary in the real world) then you are telling your players that anything goes in scrums and any player including our leagues best are fair play. You can go after their heads, ankles, knees. Doesn't matter.

Is that the type of game we want to see as fans? Doesn't the NHL want their elite level exciting players like Panarin out there competing? Or any of the fantastic athletes this game requires?

Its complete BS.

Fantastic post.

There's 30 and 1/3 fan bases behind y'all here.

Funny tho sad it has to be due to this BS, but this might the first time I can ever recall our Ranger organization being lionized by the majority of the fanbases in the league for something rather than being criticized...go figure!

This is the old adage the enemy of my enemy is my friend to the extremist level possible...lol

Not calling up geersten in a completely irrelevant game is a joke. The franchise needs to go back a decade and see what made them great. some tough hombres on those teams let our guys play freely. We need a brandon prust on this team desperately. We had one but we traded him to LA for a bag of pucks

Brendan Lemieux is being so overrated. Too much consideration of what he could be or what we wanted him to be rather than what he is. He asked to be traded. And he has had no impact and barely plays for the kings.

To this day watching Lubos Bartecko hit his head on the ice during the olympics was one of the scariest moments I've had watching the game.

I didn't see Zednick live, but with lubos it was really off putting.

Don't worry, when the Canes are back in the Metro we'll go right back to hating you for stealing Adam Fox.

Which reminds me: Julian Gauthier is a bear and comes from a family of weightlifters. Teach that kid to fight, preferably in the next 7 hours.

I never said they would be out there on power play.Don’t be ridiculous!

It was a power play when it happened. So to have them out on the ice to deter wilson would have required giving them power play time.

Logic! So useful....

I posted this on the main boards:

So two questions:

1) The people that are all about enforcers, toughness, and sticking up for teammates are criticizing Panarin for defending his teammate because Wilson is bigger than him?

2) The people are criticizing Panarin for defending his teammate by grabbing Wilson because he's bigger than him but are ignoring the fact that Wilson went after a skill player who is 20+ pounds lighter than him in Buchnevich? Who here was the tougher guy the guy going after the bigger guy or the guy going after the smaller skill guy?

The very fact that it was a PP should have been even more ammo for the NHL to suspend the prick.

How many scrums like that do you see during a PP? Not many. Why. In addition to it being special units who have skill, one team has less players on the ice - why would they willingly start shit being out-numbered?

Points to Wilsons's lack of understanding reality.

Lemieux is a lazy marshmallow who hasn't given a guy a dirty look in a calendar year.

I mean you are mostly talking about caps fans who are using pretzel logic to try and defend the indefensable.

Agreed...I brought him up briefly only cause he at least showed grit and sandpaper for us. Brandon Prust was the guy I brought up as a guy who would have been a good fit for this team...just skilled enough to hang but certainly tough enough to deal with ass clowns and wouldn't think twice about confronting a scum bucket like Wilson.

I know he'll never play for us but Matt Martin would be the perfect guy for this team to have for situations like these...oh well!

I agree with all this. The problem is that the rules don't support recourse in this case. The only way to end this type of stuff is to ban fighting, thereby banning implicit intent-to-injure. The NHL has the best on-ice hockey officials in the world and the games are televised and recorded. I'm certain that was not the case in much of your on-ice experience. That's a major reason why much North American elite hockey is plagued by unnecessary violence even though the rules of the game prohibit it. This is, of course, exacerbated by foolish violence perpetrated by players emulating their unhinged NHL "heroes" each of whom likely lacked proper rearing on the topic of what constitutes defending oneself in a moral fashion.

NHL rules don't prohibit intent-to-injure. Until that changes, both the pro sport and the amateur North American sport will be plagued with incidents like this. Now could be the time, as the NHL dinosaurs who actively lobbied for perpetuation of fighting are literally dying off. Those still alive are being dropped by broadcast booths. I imagine that the sentiment for ending fighting may be changing dramatically and gaining steam rapidly among NHL brass. I'm not privy to that information.

So, for now, the Rangers need to suck it up and play the game within the current rules. Next, they need to be the team to finally push Bettman and the GMs to ban fighting, thereby eliminating the legal gateway to sanctioned intent- to-injure on-ice conduct by NHL players and their young amateur protégées.

The current statement is weak and useless. A call to end intent-to-injure by ending fighting I can finally agree with. Current players are too soft. They need to be protected. Change the rules. Make it clear: We are all too soft/evolved/whatever, to go on this way any longer. No more fighting. No more intent-to-injure.

I guess it's finally time.

1) Pretty hypocritical wanting more toughness on this team and then criticizing one of the leaders when he shows some.

2) Wilson was smashing a player in a prone position on the ice. Doesnt matter how small or big that player is. Its basically a hit to the head, with intention.

The question I have for all of these tough guys is what would they do if their teammate was getting pummeled on the ice with his head down? Hmm?

I'm sure they are all smaller than Wilson too.

It's simple: NYR OFFICIALLY said what all of us have been saying for years, what the sports talking heads have been saying for years, and what players and coaches have beating around the bush about for years.

Parros is quite possibly the worst possible person to put in this position of considerable power. Maybe after they retire, Wilson or Matt Tkachuk should take over the role.

I read that apparently Dreger has talked to a few NHL execs who have called the Rangers' response "ridiculous", or words to that effect.

Now, assuming that's true, compare and contrast to the near universal support that the Rangers have been getting from fans and most of the talking heads. If NHL execs really think like that en masse, that really just goes to show how utterly out-of-touch the people who are in charge of the league are with current sensibilities and expectations around acceptable behaviours and consequences for stepping over the line.

Some serious introspection is in order on the massive backlash that the NHL has received for their handling of this incident.

Leafs fan here, and I just wanted to say I have the utmost respect for what the Rangers organization posted on Twitter from this incident. I'm not really sure what will happen in tomorrow's game, but if they boycotted them game, I'd support that too. It's a great thing, when a team stands up for their players, and player safety.
