Gauthier has to be one of the most overrated players by the posters here for quite some time. Yeah he's big and yeah, he might have some skill for his size. But in the end he has not been able to put it together at all. He hasn't even managed to consistently be playing.
I'd expose Gauthier before Blackwell for sure, no doubt about it.
idno i think gauthier is unique. i like rooney and blackwell, both are hard workers, have some skill, are reliable...but they're somewhat redundant - i have a hard time justifying having both. gauthier isn't just big with some skill, he can absolutely fly, and he seeks contact and forces the issue going to the net. that package could be turned into something pretty special mixed into a lineup if he can find a role that he embraces and gets to grow in. its clear he doesn't have great vision with the puck and thats limiting, but as long as he's self aware and plays to his strengths he can be made valuable. if you get him on a line with speed and size that plays simple straight line hockey, he could be a weapon in the bottom half of your lineup. you need 4 lines now that can play, you need unique skillsets that can make teams uncomfortable. rooney / blackwell aren't doing that. gauthier coming down the wall like a locomotive looking to drop his shoulder and willing to play through contact to drive the net is something they can't do. and that aggression in his game is why you keep him, that gives him a chance. i have no expectations of him becoming a star or top 6 producer, but his skillset down the lineup with the right players around him makes us far more dangerous than rooney or blackwell ever could.
