Blackwell and Rooney are both better and IMO possess more value than the other two. Rooney has some backbone, provided solid production, etc. Replacing him at his current cost might not be so easy.

Howden is garbage and I see no room for Gauthier who is still living on unfulfilled potential.

Ok, so which of Rooney and Blackwell do you protect? Because the other will be exposed

That's not how it works. Gauthier, unless protected, was already eligible to be taken by Seattle.

The exposed spots are just 2 forwards who meet minimum requirements. That doesn't mean others aren't available.

How is that possible? He's got all the potential in the world (for 3rd line types?). He has 47 career games under his belt and hasn't done poorly at all, despite being on a very short leash under Quinn. He's shown sweet hands and he's got the skill you can't teach.

Of the four I would protect Rooney. Of the 4 he has a real role and he does what’s expected of a 4th liner. You know what you’re getting. If not him though next up I would protect Gauthier. He does have upside and Gallant might be able to find him a permanent role.

I like Blackwell. He hustled for us all last year. He works. That said I can’t imagine him being a positive factor in a playoff series. Howden IMO never really developed a two way game because he never really got the chance too. Rushed into the NHL and now he only gets ice when the rest of the team needs a breather or to kill penalties.

I think that is the idea, that it could happen, not that it will.

(and yes it could be more complex than that, say there are two separate distinct trades where the throw-ins are Howden, Blackwell, Rangers still would need the other two forwards (Rooney, Gauthier) as signed for next year players to meet exposure requirements.

Again, slim chance, yet if it did come up (or is in the works whether completed or not) it's easier just to sign Gauthier now.

How do we know what their other deals are, or if it's both players to one team, and not two different trades for them or the Rangers?

I already disclaimed most of all by saying it was a slim chance, yet a chance regardless.

Options are options, and there would have been no other reason to sign Gauthier now, qualifiers are not due until I think the 26th, I doubt the Rangers would have forgot.

If he sticks with the club Gallant could be a coach who provides him more rope to play with.

I like how he began to drive to the net at stages last year when given the chance to.

He’s a big strong kid with a lot of skill who was used to scoring so who knows?

If he adds a second physical element to his game and continues to drive to the net he could be a dangerous lower line competitor.

We don't, but do you really think there's a team out there that is looking to protect 2 of the players you mentioned, and is willing to move 2 other players to accomplish it? I doubt it. We could make that deal with Vegas perhaps, since they aren't part of the draft, but I can't see any other team being interested. Most protection spots are already set at this point.

True, but if we're looking for depth like Blackwell at the deadline it won't be that hard to find.

My point is, if you're like me and think Gauthier will be a non-factor, why bother keeping him? It may be easy to replace Blackwell or Rooney (I'm not so sure it's so easy to find equal replacements for their cost--the Rangers did very well with these two signings) but why replace them if it's just to keep a spare forward who himself may be out of the organization in a year?
