It's a perfect plan. When Kakko and Lafreniere are up they should be worth about 1.0-1.5 million per. 4th line grinders. Cap issues completely solved.

Part of me certainly thinks they're trying to make sure none of these kids hit their schedule A bonuses.

The problem I have is this: We were told this team was rebuilding. We got a 7th overall pick and then found ourselves with a 9th overall pick. Then, we luck into a 2nd and a 1st overall pick. Now, we're supposed to lean on vets and play the kids 7 minutes a game because we're trying to make the playoffs? Play the kids and develop them into the future stars we were told we were getting.

Are people happy because we're winning, no matter who plays or who doesn't? Sure. Good for them.

Are people angry because the kids we are drafting so high seem to be held down because the coach trusts more experienced players in an effort to make a playoff run we weren't expected to be making for a few years? You bet.

I feel like any rational thinking person could see both sides here.

I don’t think anyone’s complaining about Quinn trying to win.

It seems pretty clear the compliant is the way he’s going about trying to win i.e playing your once in a decade talent 7 minutes lol

It’s the same shit as last year. They’re trying to make a run last minute off the veterans tearing it up and then get their doors blown off in the first round

Get it straight.

Management approves of what Quinn is doing. If they didn't, Quinn would be gone.

You're upset with the wrong guy.

Valiquette touched on this very briefly post-game. Development doesn't happen on teams that are playing meaningless games with 20 games left in the season. You have to want to win games. Throwing the kids out there and just giving them 16-18 minutes a night does nothing if the game isn't competitive. You think Mittelstadt and Cozens are going to develop into superstars in buffalo?

I think the point is that there is a balance and yet we are missing it.

Having Panarin, Strome, Zibanejad and Kreider here to shelter the kids - those four are making up the bulk of the top two lines - is a positive.

But getting Lafrieniere only 8 minutes, never giving the kids any PP1 time, and refusing to send them out in overtime is too far into the “win at all costs,” end of the spectrum.

Well his line contributed to go ahead goal in the single shift he had in the third so maybe he doesn't understand how to win games

No, he doesn't. Quinn sucks and doesn't know how to deploy the troops. At all. They give up late goals constantly, start slow, and overpass repeatedly and nothing changes. Zibanejad and Panarin are going right now (well, Bread is always going) so it's going to keep them breathing despite their crappy HC.

But that doesn't mean we should look for them to lose, because at some point DQ won't be here (because he's not good) and you want a foundation for the 16-17 guys who are here and will continue to be. It's why when Torts' hockey stopped working and AV was brought in that once the system was grasped they went on a tear. Do you think that group would have eventually responded to AV and been to a Final if from 2011-13 they absolutely sucked?

Getting into the playoffs and playing even at least one round could help the kids' development ironically be more effective next year. They would experience playoff pace, playoff intensity, what it takes to have to go all out every single shift.

Quinn basically just said he doesn’t give a shit about development he’s 3 points out.

glad we hired him to develop the kids

can’t rebuild in NY? It’s not because of the fans. I haven’t heard anyone say I want the playoffs over developing Laf and Kakko other than David Quinn
If all he cares about is winning then I’d like for him to explain why he was basically splitting Igor and Georgie earlier in the season. And Igor should play every single game going forward if all he cares about is winning.

And Quinn’s whole point is idiotic bc the Chytil line scored the go ahead goal in the third and looked good in their other shift or two that they got in the third. Are we docking them solely for their age? Bc based on play they should’ve been playing. And Kakko sitting for Rooney to take his spot at the end of the game? Kakko might be 20 but he’s one of the best defensive forward on the team, Rooney is not a better option than him in that scenario or any other scenario at all for that matter other than buying beer after the game.

Who says I don't have a bone to pick with Management hiring this moron in the first place ofc I do. You're telling me you really enjoyed watching this team barley scrape a win against the the worst team this league has seen in 2 godforsaken decades all while not using the guys who we started this rebuild for???? If so you are a delusional moron no other way getting around it

Fans who get rabidly angry after a win are amusing. Not bright, but amusing.

Considering your handle, it's impossible to believe that your beef is with management, unless you have a whole bunch of typos in it.

You’re right it starts at the top.

Like I said I’m sure when they inevitability miss the playoffs JD and Gorton will come out and say “the playoff chase was good experience” even though Lafreniere, Chytil, Gauthier, Kravstov Kakko and any other young forward was barely making an impact lol

because he’s an idiot who thought Georgiev was a 1B when we all knew he was hit or miss

The rational side is a 'blend of both'.

Play your youngins to their strengths. Maybe some PP time? MIND BLOWN.

PP1 had over 6 minutes tonight. Kakko had some time, averaging less than 30 seconds per PP. Our #1 overall pick, had ZERO PP time AND THE PP IS BOTTOM TIER. You can't make it up and there is no defending it

He's not a good NHL coach

Tell us what a coach of a team cares about, other than winning.

I thought Lafreniere looked more engaged tonight and better overall plus he was shooting. There have been a few games where I understood the low ice time but I didn't see that tonight.

Exactly; no one is really mad because he’s trying to win. No one is arguing for tanking anymore.

It’s that he needs to figure out how to do it while not having Lafreniere performing like one of the worst scoring first overall picks ever.

The second overall pick got a ton of ice time tonight though... Laf is the only one who didn't get much. And if we're being honest, and just looking at actual play on the ice, he doesn't deserve much more.

Kakko had a dominant third period. There is zero reason not to have him out in OT other than holding his age against him. He looked like one of the best forward in the third period, he should’ve been out there in OT. I’m not talking about playing him bc he’s a top prospect, he literally deserved it bc of how well he was playing.

Not to mention not playing Kakko in OT. I don't think anyone can explain that line of thinking to me. This isn't last year's Kakko. This kid is improving more and more and he would tear it up with all that space.

I mean I hate Quinn more, but Gorton is getting on my bad-side dying on this hill to keep this guy .
And you literally keep missing the goddamn point, there is not a single person here mad that they won this f***ing game. Find me the strawmen who are mad about that. People are rightfully pissed that Alexis Lafreniere, hopefuly one of like the three most important players on this team for the next decade plus, is being played 8 minuets on the ice.
