I hope he punches the everloving crap out of someone

and then does it to someone on the other team as well

those of you who watch Hartford

He does do more than just hit and Be Big, right? Cause thats all nice to see, but hows his skating.. hockey sense.. etc..

Thats what Im getting at.

Vigneault says hes worried about team toughness

"Oh I got a tough kid down in the minors"

Boom, bam, done.

If anything the policing is going to help him develop, I think.

He's comfortable fighting. He's likely going to be uncomfortable with every other aspect of his game. He'll be under a microscope. Skating ability, positioning, shot, physicality, ability to clear the crease, passing, etc. Fighting will allow him to buy himself some leeway with the coach and the fans. He's good at it, it will give him confidence. As long as he doesn't think that fighting is his road to a sustained NHL career and actually focuses on becoming a top 4 defender, I think the policing will help with his development this year, rather than stunt it.

Give the young man a feel of the NHL. AV indicated today he discussed possible call ups with management.

Gordie Clark spoke to a prospects radio show and he discussed McIlrath in part 1. This is from 3 weeks ago. The one area Clark felt McIlrath needed to improve was his ability to move the puck at NHL speed. Beukeboom has helped him understand what his role will be in the NHL.

Skating is better than you expect, if you expect a lumbering baboon as said on this board.

He's a big guy, his skating isn't the best. But for his size it's above average.

His passing is getting better. So is his shot.

Positioning is improving too.

He's really improving in every aspect of his game. That's why people want him to stay down their longer. So he can not only be improving, but be dominant in those aspects when he comes up.

If he comes up here to play 9 minutes a game, it's a mistake, but if AV is willing to play him 15+ and commits to letting him learn through his mistakes, I think he'll be a fixture on this team for a long long time.

More punching!

Yes! The next HFBoards great one! Will he live up to the hype? Just be OK? Take his place as the next whipping boy?

All of the above :).

I'm not looking forward to HF killing him when he makes his first mistake.

Youre awfully confused today. Might be time to take a walk or something.

It means these kids continue to be brought up and dropped into positions where they are unlikely to succeed.
Perhaps it would help if you would describe a situation in which he would succeed. He's going to be playing sheltered minutes on the third pairing.

Not sure what's confusing about it. Its hard enough to learn the defensive game at the NHL level. McIlrath is going to have to do it while being the only police officer on duty. In other words, maybe too much responsibility for a rookie defensemen. I'm interesting in seeing this play out and maybe McIlrath hits the ground running, but its a valid point.
I don't really see it. I don't think being a police officer should require much of his mental energy. If there's a fight, drop the gloves and throw punches. If not, keep them on.

YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

from my lips to Sathers' ears!!

Sometimes development means learning at the biggest stage before you're ready.

People in other job industries assume jobs that are over their head, at first. Some people don't succeed, others rise to the task.

There will always be a learning curve. NY fans need to understand there will be good and bad. But i'm glad the undertaker is here.

so why cant Hrivik or Yogan do that and take Pyatt and Pouliot spot?? cheaper, more cap space. Hrivik didnt look bad in preseason.. im shocked he hasnt gotten a game already..

The sarcastic toughness posts are understandable, but this isn't anywhere close to recalling Asham or calling up Mashinter earlier to add a little toughness. This is actually adding toughness, I expect him to get sheltered minutes and hopefully destroy someone. I'd actually really enjoy him pounding Dubi's face.

Some players are closer than others, D-Mac is really quite close IMO.

I had no idea what that meant either

Kid was drafted to be a tough nhl dman

We're asking him to be a tough nhl dman

No one asked him to play wing and put up points

Like "he's being asked to be an nhl dman" boo hoo

What did u want him to be? Time for a cup of coffee to see what it's about

Cup of coffee won't hurt the kid. As long as he's not expected to solve the toughness issues by himself.

Knowing Sather he would do that to ruin him.. any scouts going to be at the game tomorrow.. i hope this isnt trade bait for that UFA top 6 forward :sarcasm:

Falk has size and tries to play a mean game. That's where the similarities to him and McIlrath end. Dylan is a lot tougher than Falk is. For instance McIlrath has fought a whole bunch of AHL heavy's and he doesn't lose very many. Whether he's ready for the NHL is another question but sometimes it's on the job training. I get that at times watching Moore and Del Zotto.

Anyway I've been looking forward to his first game for a while.

Yes! Looking forward to seeing him at the NHL level. I've been very impressed with his game at the AHL level.

I feel bad for the Pack, though. The Rangers are tearing their roster apart.

No, but it is huge step in the right direction. Now we have Dorsett and McIlrath...who will be looking to DEMOLOLISH someone, tomorrow!!

I'm so happy right now

Expect the Rangers to slowly break him in. 10-12 minutes would be fine for his first game. Don't be surprised at a McIlrath vs. Boll fight.

If we can't beat them on the scoreboard, we'll beat them with our fists!

I approve.
