I think his skating looked better than I had been anticipating. He certainly isn't afraid to mix it up, that is nice to see. Not much else to say really, need to see more.

You could talk about the elephant in the room, which is just how bad of a decision his pinch off the bench was.

Whatever though, kid was amped up, hope he doesnt try to overdue it next game.

Calling him a bust now is the risky bet, I know, but I figure if I am correct down the road it will pay dividends in "I told you so"s which is the highest honor bestowed upon a poster on HFBoards.

I was going to Photoshop you a platinum "I told you so" medallion but got lazy.

Eh I don't see that as a big elephant in the room. He made a simple mistake that shift...so did about 4 other rangers. First NHL game, no need to harp on one play.

I have full reason to believe he'll be a faster, tougher Beukeboom. It's possible that he'll stumble and won't reach his potential, but at this point, that's a very reasonable projection for him.

IMO, some of the reason for bringing Ulfi in this year as a NHL assistant. Having Beuk mentor him in the AHL and Ulfi taking him to the next rung on the latter.

If Mac can play a mix of Beuk & Ulfi's games I feel sorry for the opposition in a few years.

i thought he looked pretty terrible out there.

let me also say, im not a hater, i like the kid, and i'm sure he'll be fine.

i also understand that there are nerves, lack of practice time, and dealing with the clusterfrak that is the new york rangers and just how awful they are playing as a team. with that said, the kid had a bad game.

who didn't, tonight.

He did a good job baiting Dubs too.

Noticed that also. Not liking the way he initiated it so much as how he reacted during the altercation but, for the style he plays he seemed to have a pretty good handle on his emotions. Once he realized he drew the call he just dropped it and skated away in satisfaction. His skating was also better then advertised but still needs work, especially his transitioning in the d-zone as faster forwards will get the space they need by making him turn his hips. He didn't look NHL ready yet and the people that matter know this, he IS good enough to hold his head above water in a sheltered role however and this NHL stint is a necessary step in the development of a raw defenseman. I hope AV let's Mcl string together 5 games in a row so I can see how he adjusts to the NHL pace, game by game.

Decent performance. He made one real bad play, that happens. Also need to work on his positioning. But his skating looks good and he brings needed toughness.

He went to make a hit to give his team and the building some energy and emotion. At least he tried to do that while the other guys were going through the motions. Did their checks get deposited into their accounts? That's all most of the players seem to care about. Some of these players look like they are waiting for the 3 day Christmas break. The biggest home stand of the season. 0-3-1. They lost to Winnipeg and barely beat Buffalo.

He wasn't terrible. The team was terrible.

Mcilrath looked like he belonged and didn't stand out any more than any other player to me. He's limited in what he can do and his minutes were practically nil in the 3rd.

I give him another game

If this team knew how to work any kind of pressure in the neutral zone that one mistake by mc doesn't turn into a goal.

I thought he looked alright, not out of place, you could tell he was trying to talk it up and get to them all night, just too bad our powerplay also blows

He was all over the place in the first period. Constantly out of position in his own zone, making bad reads on plays... he was just trying to do too much. Once they came out in the 2nd though he settled in very nicely

Truth.

I think his awful play that led to the 2nd goal was more about being amped up and trying to make a difference than anything else. If its view into his decision making process, than we've got a problem.

This team could use more mistakes of aggression, to be honest.

Watching his 1st period...I heard Benny Hill music each time he hit the ice (older guy reference haha) After that he seemed to settle down and did a decent job. It's definitely going to take a little time for him to get his NHL legs. I hope he gets the chance.

I'm just glad he finally played. I like his toughness. His first game so what can we really expect? He will get better.

Yup, this team has totally checked out, and it's only December..

I totally agree with your assessment of DM.

Yup. He wanted to do something that gets him noticed, show "his game". He just made the decision to do that at a pretty awful time. Not a big deal, at least he learned his lesson in what seemed to be an exhibition game for the rest of the team.

The issue I have with mcilrath is the same as watching football players attempt to tackle by throwing a shoulder.

Players in professional sports are far too strong and have far too much balance for that to continually work.

Maybe once in awhile you get the guy off his feet. But there are going to be a bunch of times guys bounce off. And you gave up a big play going the other way.

To be a capable defenseman, when you pinch to hit, you absolutely can not miss. How often does Kronwall miss those hits? If he isn't nearly guaranteed of making the play, he doesn't attempt it. That's responsible defense
