Kostka and Hunwick are dmen. It's possible that both are in the AHL and Allen is promoted to 7th dman.

Zucc's discount has nothing to do with Hayes. If Hayes is on the team, it means someone else isn't. It will be pretty much an even swap cap wise.

He's still bound to the ELC contract restrictions correct? which means that any performance bonuses could get pushed out a year.

If revenues go up like they did last season, a cap of 73 million without the 5% kicker is more than likely. With the 5% kicker the NHLPA has the right enact would mean a Salary cap of 76.65 million.

enough room to contain some bonus money

Brooks is fantastic when he agrees with me. When he doesn't, he's so biased its horrible. Gotta take the good with the bad.

LOL not talking about you in particular, but that is the general Ranger Fan sentiment about any hockey reporter/columnist.

CAPGEEK.COM TOTALS (follow @capgeek on Twitter)
(estimations for 2014-15)
SALARY CAP: $69,000,000; CAP PAYROLL: $62,587,500; BONUSES: $0 (plus eventually Hayes if signed)
CAP SPACE (20-man roster): $6,412,500

Brassards price will determine how the bottom 6 will look like
We need one more bigger fwd on the team. First option would be Kevin Hayes on August 16. Second, perhaps, the IHOP legend dusting Penner
Young Guys like Miller, Fast, Lindberg, Haggerty, Kristo, Hrivik, McIllWrath and Allen can be eased into the lineup providing excellent depth as they become NHL ready thereby trading a few stop gaps for picks
Klein is too expensive as a third pairing defender too

Yes, he must sign a 2 year ELC. If he signs with us, gets a contract that includes performance bonuses, and actually earns those bonuses, that's a good problem to have. But I doubt it will come to that. I don't think he's going to get max bonuses no matter who he ends up signing with, and don't think he's going to earn them all in any case. He could spend the entire year in the AHL.

Klein can play 2nd pair minutes. He's a good insurance policy in case of injury and when Boyle leaves, he can slide up if McIlrath isn't ready for 2nd pair minutes yet.

He's on a very good contract, but it's a luxury having him play 3rd pair minutes. Though he may play more at even strength and on the PK next year. Boyle isn't getting any younger and he will be used a lot on the PP.

That isn't a roster spot where we should be looking to save money right now. Remember how bad our defensive depth was in 2011?

I remember that Stu fella
But it would be great if someone from within the pipeline could fill that spot at some point this season for a fraction of the cost - no?

Klein will be traded before the start of next season ('15-'16).

Allen, McIlrath, and Skjei.

The first two were nearly ready for 3rd line minutes this year. Both will make less than 1 mill. Difference of 2 million dollars.

With Zucc, MSL, Step, Hags, Staal, and Talbot all FA's... and potentially even Brassard, too.

Saving 2 million is huge.

Absolutely, but who? McIlrath and Allen seem like the prime candidates, but neither are going to come in as rookies and play to Klein's level. If one of Girardi or Boyle were to get hurt for an extended period of time, we'd be in trouble.

Klein has 4 years left on his contract. He won't get traded until one of the kids makes him absolutely expendable. Consider also that Staal is up for contract next year and may get traded. Klein could shift to the left side. He did that a few times when Diaz was in the lineup, IIRC.

Klein is on a great contract for a 2nd pair dman. He's a luxury on our team because we have the depth to play him on the 3rd pair, but that depth could vanish quickly. If it does, we'll be very glad we have him.

I could see Klein sticking around past next season if Moore doesnt elevate his game or if Staal doesnt re-sign.

Metrangerfan71 wheres the kreider video?? Lol ...i liked the zucc one

I have a feeling that Skjei will slot into Staal's position by the end of next year and that McIlrath will take Klein's spot before the end of this season.

Fielding a defensive core that are all capable of handling NHL minutes is huger.

Good post.

Penny pinching on Klein's contract takes a back seat compared to on ice performance which, as you noted, would suffer with his potential replacements.

If Allen and McIlrath make it into the lineup anytime soon, it'll be because of an injury, not because of a Klein trade.

Klein makes too much??!!

People are complaining about the Rangers having 3 top-4 RH defensemen on the roster - one of the toughest commodities in the NHL to find.

They want to penny-pinch on Klein's contract, save a little dough, and hurt the defense in the process. It makes no sense.

it's a balancing act. This team has trouble scoring and can't afford forwards. I think having Klein is a luxury. He's top 4 on many teams, but he's third pair here and you need to ask if you want to have the best third pair in the league, or spend $1MM less and have that money to upgrade another position, as in next season when MSL is gone. With MSL gone and Klein's replacement making at least $1MM less (or more), then you have, in theory, $6.6MM to replace MSL. I'm not saying what should be done; not smart enough these days, but I can see the logic in going lighter on the third defense pair/insurance policy in case of injury to augment the offense.

This.. it seems people always have something to complain about

The problem with "going lighter" is that Boyle will be gone in 2 years and Staal may be gone next year. If we trade Klein, we may have McD, Girardi and a bunch of kids behind them. I'm all for giving the kids a chance, but I'd like to see them prove they can play before we trade away someone like Klein.

If they can't fill the void, then we have to spend UFA dollars on defense instead of the offense. A UFA top 4 dman is going to cost more than Klein's 2.9 mil per year.

That's at least two more seasons of this:

I'm very happy that they got this done and avoided the hearing. Best not to get into all that nastiness if the player's number isn't insane to begin with.

Klein is a popular scapegoat around these parts, for no reason. He's been a solid part of our defense since he got here.
