Ola, thanks for the write up.

I really liked what I saw of Henriksson at Traverse City. The agility that you mentioned really stood out to me. He clearly is thought highly of in Sweden where without covid he would have centered Sweden's first line at the WJC. Many Ranger fans seem down on him because during a crazy covid year playing in one of the best leagues in the world and not playing very much he didn't score. Our group prospect ranking has him as the 21st best prospect. That's ridiculous. I'm looking forward to seeing him in camp and then reading reports from those of you watching his games back win Sweden and proving our group ranking wrong.

I saw a couple of periods of Frölunda’s game.

I like Henriksson a lot still. Every time he got the puck he finds a teammates blade in a solid position. A good news is that he also plays PK this year and was on the top PK unit.

That line is a little special. Joel Lundqvist is 39 y/o, and he has always been more of a checking line center type. He plays a hard game, takes the body and forechecks well. But… Like he has never been great in the SHL and the last 5 seasons has been a steady decline, albeit not at a rapid pace. Not to make excuses for Henriksson, but he certainly isn’t getting to be a passenger on his line in any way, shape or form. He is the first guy back, he is often then one starting the break out. And that break out turns into a forechecking/circling game. That line plays the ‘right way’ and is the typical CF% positive line, but Friberg is a instant shooter and Joel is always crashing the net. Henriksson gets room to create offense by himself, taking the puck to the net, and he does that, but overall that line just got a “flat” vibe. Kind of like a NHL line centered by Ryan Getzlaf today if you get what I mean.

I would have liked to see a bit more development in Henriksson’s overall motor. Like agility wise, he is elite. Like if a puck bounce into a corner, he can do a 180, get there and pick up the puck, do another 180 and pass it to a team mate — despite it looking like a situation you never come away from with the puck — before anyone can react. But the ice is biiig in these games in Europe and teams loves to slow the pace time, turn home before heading up ice. It takes a different kind of motor to put Ds on their heels on the counter attack and that is something that he isn’t showing. I do hope, and at least some degree expect, he to be better fit in NA in this regard. When a center gets to a lose puck at center ice in the defensive zone he won’t need binoculars to spot the defending Ds because they left the zone early.

He got the offensive vision, he got the work ethic, that ability of like a Marty Straka to always be where his line needs him to be, he just makes his teammates better. BUT — he just needs to be able to push the pace more, to put Ds on their heels, and he isn’t there. Not yet at least.

There are plenty of reasons to be down on him beyond just last season. Some of us have been sour on him since the pick was made.

Traverse has proven to be nothing more other than a fun diversion for fans. The list of guys who have impressed there that are sub-ECHL level is endless.

Nothing wrong with preaching patience with the kid, but nothing wrong with being underwhelmed by his frame, tools, and performance to date.

FWIW I watched him in Sweden for parts of probably 15 games last season.

I'm not trying to shit on Henriksson, but the way. I've just seen plenty of him the past two seasons and have some real reservations about him. He of course has plenty of time to pick it up, though.

There's really no denying that Henriksson has been underwhelming and the only real reason I can justify his ELC this early (after 2 years) is arbitration rights. By signing it at age 20, they basically guarantee Henriksson won't be arbitration eligible when his ELC expires even if he plays 3 full seasons in New York.

Speaking of the Traverse Prospect Tournament, i just checked and it is happening this year, unfortunately the Rangers are not in it however.

He was still a good pick for where they got him and was worth a shot. Not working out, but that is the reality of the majority of prospects.

I didn't hate the pick. I'm just disappointed with the lack of progress, and it was so promising with the pre-season he had with the Rangers in 2019

Agreed. I think his speed is his downfall. He has the mind for it, but his wheels never progressed.

He reminds me a lot of Brassard with the way he plays. He's great at distributing the puck. Where his limitations really show is the bigger rink in Sweden. I'm not saying it will happen, but on a smaller rink he has less ground to cover which could be an advantage for him. That said, he needs to really stand out in other areas to make up for that lack of pace.

Fluff piece.
NY Rangers 2021 draft picks talk first impressions of New York City.

I hate these pieces so much.

It's the post Cerny version of "How does it feel to be drafted by an original 6 team?" Like who cares really?

To Cerny's credit, he DID produce come quality content and was clearly a fan of the game but I could really do with out these things. They just take up space.

Agree 100%. Why is it seem so difficult to run interviews with the prospects asking them questions about their training regime, teammates, what they’re working on to improve, what they believe are their strengths and what time line they have set for themselves to make it to the NHL.
I believe out of the last several videos I’ve posted most have very little substance. Also I think years ago they did a much better job. They use to have a guy up in Greenburgh who use to pump out great content.

I have spoken to 2 dozen prospects, and never brought up the Original Six thing. I don't think players care. I'm always more interested with their draft experience in general rather than "Rangers are an Original Six team, you must be so happy" schtick.

Spoke to Ryder Korczak last night as part of my prospect interview series and he confirmed he will fly to NY on September 9th to join training camp. With junior teams starting their training camp in the coming days, they will have some on-ice hours in when they arrive in NY.

Not sure the practice facility is open to the public, but if anyone is interested, their practice facility is in Westchester.

Google Maps

Frölunda and Rögle have Champions League games tomorrow. Henriksson and Edström. TPS is Friday. Väisänen.

Jokerit U20 has a game Saturday. That's presumably where we'll see Chmelař.
