i sent the question by email to CapFriendly as well

the question re Gildon reminds me slightly of JT Miller, who was set to enroll at No Dak, but after NYR drafted him, he went to OHL instead.

of curse there are key differences
JT (a) was a 1st round pick, and JT (b) had a choice

re Gildon
(a) for NYR to lock in Gildon NOW, he would have to sign ELC which would disqualify him from playing college hockey.
(b) as an undrafted player, the generic odds of him having a financially successful pro hockey career are much slimmer, so greater long-term risk by bypassing college now ...

Depends what league the player comes from

CHL, QMJHL, WHL Rule:

"Undrafted players whose rights belong to CHL teams are eligible -- even at age 18 or 19 -- to sign NHL entry level contracts as unrestricted free agents. NHL teams are free to invite such players to summer development camp in July and/or the rookie and main NHL roster camps in September. A signing decision must be made by a set date when their CHL season begins. "

Thank you

That jives with why there was ELC chatter when goalie Raaymakers was w NYR a couple years back (and last preseason when he was w CBJ)
If Nell is not QO'd (unclear) I wouldn't mind Raaymakers in NYR system

At this point, unmatriculated, Gildon may considered a Junior (but not CHL) player

the current cba went into effect jan 2013, so my only guess is that maybe he was subject to the old rules? not really sure but you need to go undrafted multiple teams, thats why leason who is almost 20 had to be drafted after not getting picked twice.

From the CBA

8.4 Eligibility for Claim.

(a) All Players age 18 or older are eligible for claim in the Entry Draft, except:

(i) a Player on the Reserve List of a Club, other than as a try-out;

(ii) a Player who has been claimed in two prior Entry Drafts;

(iii) a Player who previously played in the League and became a Free Agent pursuant to this Agreement;

(iv) a Player age 21 or older who: (A) has not been selected in a previous Entry Draft and (B) played hockey for at least one season in North
America when he was age 18, 19, or 20 and shall be eligible to enter the League as an Unrestricted Free Agent pursuant to Article 10.1(d); and

(v) a Player age 22 or older who has not been selected in a previous Entry Draft and shall be eligible to enter the League as an Unrestricted Free
Agent pursuant to Article 10.1(d).

so the last 2 would apply depending on if the guy played in north america or not...draft eligible until they turn 21 (born prior to 9/15/98) or 22 (9/15/97)

that I believe is the current rule for all players...I have zero clue why it was different for tolchinsky

From the current CBA (article 8.9b):
No Player shall be eligible for play in the League unless he:....
b. had been eligible for claim in the last Entry Draft, but was unclaimed, and:

ii) had played hockey in North America the prior season and was under age
20 at the time of the last Entry Draft, and signed an SPC which was signed
and registered with the League between the conclusion of the Entry Draft
and commencement of the Major Juniors season (except that if such
Player had signed an NHL try-out form, which was signed and registered
with the League during the aforesaid time period, then the deadline for
signing and registering with the League an SPC with such try-out Club
shall be the commencement of the NHL Season).

So my reading is that even NCAA bound players under 20 can sign an NHL contract if they are undrafted and sign a try-out form.

If you played outside of NA, you have to go back into the draft

you can fight it out with Bill Meltzer @billmeltzer on twitter, he works for the Flyers and he stated even 18 year old undrafted players can be NHL free agents depending on what other league owns their rights

i have no idea who that is nor do i give a crap. i'm not fighting out anything with anyone. i copied that word for word from the cba if you think its wrong ignore it

It really is and I don’t know why. I can understand him falling. But you’d think a guy who is consistently seen as being a third or fourth round pick would at least be worth the gamble in later rounds.

I don’t know what’s up there, but it’s strange that he would then be invited immediately to a developmental camp.

Does any CHL team hold his rights?

You know who the forgotten man in all of this is? Morgan Barron. He will play for the Rangers.

As the ephemera of drafting Kakko subsides a bit, I slowly start to remember:

"oh yeah, we convinced Rykov to come over, that's cool................oh yeaaaaah Morgan Barron could turn some heads very soon, that's really cooool..............Oh Yeahhh, we got Adam Fox about to step in and show us his otherworldly poise.............that's awesomeeee......................OH YEAH! THE CZAR IS FINALLY HERE!!! преклоняйся перед ним!........................OH HELL YEAH!!! VITALI KRAVTSOV IS FINALLY HERE!!!GOING TO TURN HEADS WITH SILK HANDS AND WHEELS LIKE BUTTER ON A FRYING PAN!!!!!!!...........................................................OH YEAAAAAAAAAAHHHHH, THEY WILL PROBABLY TRY HIM ON A LINE WITH ***INHALE*** KAAPO KAKKOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!"

And thus the cycle repeats itself.

he was at the Rangers draft party and ****ing hell the kid is a giant.

Yup, Barron and Rykov stood out, literally. Shesterkin was there and got the best reception from the crowd. Keep forgetting who was the other prospect in this group.
