Agree about Gildon. According to Elite Prospects he is going to Ohio State next year.

According to Elite Prospects Whelan is going back to Quinnipiac for his senior season. I guess it's possible but seems unlikely he would leave college for an AHL contract.

Max Johnson is an interesting prospects. Chris Dilks, the SB Nation college hockey reporter, rated Johnson as the 9th best NCAA free agent this past season. He averaged a point a game in his sophomore season. This is his write up on Johnson.

9. Max Johnson, Center, Sophomore(‘98), Bowling Green
Johnson has shown great versatility while developing into a reliable scorer for the Falcons this year. He has always been a good skater with decent puck-handling ability, but has developed excellent physical strength and a grittiness to his game that makes him tough to defend against in front of the net. He likely wouldn’t stay at center at the pro level, but his combination of speed and strength could make him a valuable asset on a lower line.

2019 Top NCAA NHL Free Agents

Of the seven invitees, no goalies, no defensemen, 6 NCAA players and only 1 major junior player.

Gildon was somewhat of a surprise to not get drafted.

Whelan is a solid player and unless someone offers him an ELC, I wouldn't be surprised to see him on Hartford after his season ends.

Anything interesting on the FA invites? I see an Amonte and a Gossage

Gildon is the most interesting IMO.

Widely seen as a mid-third to mid-fourth round pick, he went undrafted.

Not necessarily exceptional in any one area, his all-around game is at least comparable to other players whose names were called.

I don’t know what the issue was.

With Whelan, I meant he'd sign an AHL deal or an ATO when he graduates. Lots of guys that we bring after the college seasons end are guys we had at this camp. He's a good candidate IMO.

Whoa, how the hell did Michael Gildon not get drafted? I had no clue he wasn't picked. That's shocking.

It really is and I don’t know why. I can understand him falling. But you’d think a guy who is consistently seen as being a third or fourth round pick would at least be worth the gamble in later rounds.

I don’t know what’s up there, but it’s strange that he would then be invited immediately to a developmental camp.

If you're going to tell me you watched his 3 or 4 starts in the Top 10 after he served as backup for the big club, and that he was outstanding, I can't really argue with you since I didn't watch those games. It just seems hard for me to believe, but whatever. I've never questioned his ability, so it wouldn't be surprising. Just seems strange that he was outstanding in those six starts, yet Wallden posted vastly superior numbers in twice the starts (Wallden is older, of course, but that to me is irrelevant as we're just talking performance, not development) and also killed it in the playoffs.

I just need to remember "Prince" Skapski's run of two games to believe someone can have such a positive impression in such a short time. You cans till play lights out in a few games and lose. Talent is talent and the staff will recognize it.

Just for comparison sake I used the Wayback Machine to look at the thread from 2012.

Junior Prospects: 4

NCAA Prospects: 3

International Prospects: 6

Zuccarello (when he went to the KHL)

It's no wonder we barely draft from the CHL anymore. Look at that ROI! woof!

Zerter-Gossage, Nick Jones and Dmowski ended last year in Hartford. I'm pretty sure that Jones signed an AHL contract for this year.

I though Gildon was going to be drafted yesterday.

Our defense has a bunch of studs--K'andre Miller, Nils Lundqvist, Adam Fox, Yegor Rykov, Tarmo Reunanen, Matthew Robertson--Joey Keane, Jacob Ragnarsson, Nico Gross and Zachary Jones aren't any slouches either.

Looking ahead to this but also looking ahead to Traverse.

Our Traverse lineup in goal--Shestyorkin and Huska. On defense--Fox, Rykov (a couple full seasons in the KHL), Reunanen ( a great year in Liiga last year), Robertson, Keane, Gross.

I don't think any team is going match that kind of defense this year and with Kakko and Kravtsov--those will probably be the best two forwards in the tournament. Not sure we're going to have a lot of forward depth after those two though.

Prospect Camp talk both here and at HWP thread
this from the other thread, would welcome anyone's clearer knowledge in this

even ignoring his NCAA status, gildon is too young to sign as a free agent he will go back into the draft next year as an overager

i don't believe that is fully accurate
recall Tolchinsky (see more details below)

undrafted, he attended Prospect Camp w both NYR and 'Canes
was expected to be in Traverse City w NYR,
but in August 'Canes signed him to ELC

i don't know the section of CBA, but this is my hazy understanding

to attend Prospect Camp, player signs an ATO
That ATO also entitles the team to a limited window to sign player to ELC
(til early fall i believe, around when the player's non-pro team season begins, maybe)

Sergei Tolchinsky at eliteprospects.com
Date of Birth Feb 03, 1995
08/22/2013 Confirmed Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds Carolina Hurricanes
In August 2013 Tolchinsky was 18

Canes Agree to Terms with Sergey Tolchinsky
Canes Agree to Terms with Sergey Tolchinsky August 22nd, 2013
RALEIGH, NC – Ron Francis, Vice President of Hockey Operations for the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that the team has agreed to terms with free-agent forward Sergey Tolchinsky (SIHR-gay TOLL-chin-skee) on a three-year, entry-level contract.
