Plus if you look at what Hobey Baker winner Cale Makar did in Colorado's playoff run last year, it gives you hope. He and Fox had similar seasons last year in the NCAA.

While Fox's dominance in college is encouraging, Makar is a completely different type of player. My preference would be for him to start in the AHL as I think there will be an adjustment.

How so? Both are playmaking D-men from NCAA. Both are close to the same height, weight and age (both on the small side). Both shoot right. Both named as Rookie's of the year. Both played well in World Juniors. Both had practically the same stats last year. Both were Hobey Baker finalist,... So how are Fox and Makar completely different?

The only difference I see is that Makar skates like the wind.

And that's a humongous difference and effects the way they play hockey. Fox is incredibly cerebral and one of the best passers I've seen in college in a long time. Makar makes plays using his speed and skill and while his passing is very good it's not close to Fox's. They're both incredibly dangerous and butthole clenching with the puck on their stick but for completely different reasons. Would you say for example Giordano and Yandle who are the same size, same shot, close in age and close in production the past year and overall in their careers are the similar players? Of course not because they have completely different skill sets. So using those arguments on hecking prospects is even more ridiculous.

I'm not saying this as a way of shitting on Fox because I think he's an excellent prospect, but Makar's skating puts him on a much different level as a prospect to me. I would just like to slow the hype train down on Fox because there are going to be some Pionk-level defensive moments for him. I don't want everyone to immediately rip Fox a new one, like they did with Andersson last year after he struggled, when he doesn't immediately turn into prime Shatty.

All this said still doesn't make him a completely different type of player, which is what you said. They are both small playmaking D-men. Just because one happens to be faster doesn't mean his whole style of play is different. Makar might be more dynamic of the two, but they are still both in the same category of dangerous offensive D-men.

Just saw perhaps the best highlight reel of Kakko. This guy is a stud. He out muscles everyone in this highlight reel. And you know some of these highlights are against men in the Finnish league. An 18 yr old out muscling men. And super strong on the puck with his stick handling. He is a beast. So glad we got him over Hughes. I much prefer a power forward who can do it all. Oh baby am I excited for this season to begin....

I love it when people answer their own questions

Off the top of my head, the only defensemen who are going to be able to handle that are Parayko and Hedman. Otherwise...good f***ing luck.

He looked impressive, didn't he? He's the kind of power forward I always hoped Kreider to be. I like Kreider, but he was never as strong on the puck as this kid. He doesn't have the hands/puck control this kid has. Kakko's puck control reminds me of Jagr. Awful tough to knock off the puck. Something Kreider never developed.

Premature to be making up on our minds on how ready or not Fox is. Training camp is going to decide that. I will say a couple things though--1) the vibe I've gotten from the Rangers is they do think he might be ready and 2) I'm not missing Shattenkirk. He wasn't very good for us. His skating is pretty average--his defending not so hot and his ability to run our power play was lacking. A goal and 6 assists last year on the pwp is kind of pathetic.

Not missing Shattenkirk either. Re. Fox's readiness, I think having Trouba and ADA ahead on the depth chart and Smith behind / ready to step in should provide a good environment for Fox to develop "on the go" with enough competition to challenge for a spot but not too much to get overwhelmed.

I just wanted to slow the hype-train down that's it. People expecting more than 17-18 mpg and 25-30 points are going to disappointed and they shouldn't be.

In preseason today, Sjalin playing 3RD. Ragnarsson is the spare D for Rogle.

Henriksson and Edstrom will both start with the J20 squads for their respective teams.

Pajuiemi is the 3RW again this season from how they've been lining up at TPS. Lauri Korpikoski, the Captain, is healthy again after missing almost all of last season and is the 1RW in Kakko's spot with Predator's bust Zach Budish at 2RW. Pajuniemi better produce, or he could be passed by Oskari Lehtinen, the current projected 4RW.

Looks like Aaltonen has twice lined up at 3LW and once at 4RW, according to the lineups posted.

Unless they changed it, Aaltonen is also playing in the u20 4N

Yeah, the "official" site (Zápasy: Reprezentace U20 | Hokej.cz - web českého hokeje) doesn't list the rosters, but the various releases indicated Edstrom and Kjellberg would be there for Sweden with Aaltonen for Finland. So I assume that's still the case.

These are the 4 websites I use for info on the 4 EU countries.

Hokej.cz = Czech hockey union
Leijonat.fi = Finnish (not to be confused with leijonat.com which is shit)
Swestats.se = Swedish (personally my favorite website for Swedish hockey line ups etc)
en.fhr.ru= Russia

Leijonat - Suomen U20-joukkue elokuun Venäjän turnaukseen

Yeah I do the same, except I generally just use liiga.fi for Finnish stuff. Liiga is usually all I'm interested in. Stats.swehockey.se is great not just for Swedish stuff, but they do a really good job tracking various international tournaments. Though sometimes they randomly don't, like in the case of this U20 4N tournament (unless they suddenly decide to put it up tomorrow). The Russian Federation site sucks, but sometimes it's all there is. The Czech site is good.

Eurohockey.com also has good coverage, although they also delve into some leagues that are irrelevant to me. EliteProspects, it can be hard to tell what they include and exclude in a guy's stats--like they'll say a guy had 15 games for his U20 team, but I count 11 (and then realize they also count 4 pre-tournament exhibitions). Stuff like that. I count my own stats for my stuff in post #1. That gets hard though with goalies, haha.

DeAngelo was a better quarterback. We need to sign him. We are not deep at all on the blueline. Any words on this kid Rykov. At 6'2 and 225 lbs his big body would be welcome.

Fox left his senior year at Hartford. I tend to think he plans to make the club out of camp. But we will see.

And as far as slowing down the hype train, you have got to be kidding me. This is Hype Season. If we can't get excited, especially this offseason then WTH. We have so many promising youngsters, someone is going to make a splash. Maybe even more than one. I have been following the Rangers since the early 70's, and I never saw a more promising offseason. I'm not crazy about spending all our cap space on free agents, but WTH, this is NY, and it was only a matter of time before we reverted back to our old ways. I hope Trouba gives us a few good years. But his contract reminds me of Wade Redden's. Trouba is a 3-4 D man getting top dollar for many years.

I once said following EU prospects is a full-time job and it really feels like it sometimes. My biggest issue is figuring out which tournaments are held where etc. I got last-minute tickets to the Hlinka tournament which was an hour from where I live. The Czech u20 tournament is now the 3rd or 4th of the tournament instead of the 2nd. They shuffle it around each year. This year the 2nd tournament is in Helsinki. It messes up my schedule a bit but I can make it work. I come back from Nashville on the 3rd and the tournament starts on the 8th :laugh:
